Former US President George Bush arrives in Mumbai

Former US President George W Bush arrived in Mumbai on Monday evening on a "personal visit" and checked into the iconic Taj Mahal hotel in South Mumbai. "A private jet carrying Bush and his entourage landed at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport sometime back. He is in Mumbai for some personal work," a senior IPS official said.

The 65-year-old Bush and his team checked into the Taj Mahal hotel where he is likely to attend an event on Wednesday, police said.

A Quick Response Team (QRT) has been deployed outside the hotel for his security, they said.

Bush, who was the President of United States between 2001-2009, is scheduled to leave the city early morning on Wednesday

I think he is the first US pres to have a somewhat friendly attitude towards INDIA. Otherwise it was like CEATO story being dragged on !!

Former US President George Bush heading to India - *

Its true mate, i'm not bluffing.

"India in the 21st century is a natural partner of the United States because we are brothers in the cause of human liberty. Yesterday, I visited a memorial to Mahatma Gandhi, and read the peaceful words of a fearless man. His words are familiar in my country because they helped move a generation of Americans to overcome the injustice of racial segregation. When Martin Luther King arrived in Delhi in 1959, he said to other countries, "I may go as a tourist, but to India, I come as a pilgrim." I come to India as a friend.

For many years, the United States and India were kept apart by the rivalries that divided the world. That's changed. Our two great democracies are now united by opportunities that can lift our people, and by threats that can bring down all our progress. The United States and India, separated by half the globe, are closer than ever before, and the partnership between our free nations has the power to transform the world."

He was quoting MLK's statement, not making his comment.

George Bush will always be remembered for his vision of US-India relations from a long term perspective.

He laid the foundations of a relationship which could have a defining impact during the rest of the century, at a global level.

Indians have always associated themselves with the democratic freedoms and freedom of speech and press as prevanlent in UK, USA etc (even before Bush). But it was Bush who brought India and US closer at the political and govt level.

Contrasting this with Nixon (or even Bill Clinton), chinese and Americans never cherished the same values .... it was always about playing geopolitical game (Nixon) and shrewd lobbying by chinese / short-term convenience (Bill Clinton).

Wow a war criminal who is guilty of murdering several thousand innocent people is just a step short from being Indian national hero...I dont think the visit is all to "personal".

I dont care about what the Americans or the pakistanis say about bush. I respect him for all the initiatives he took to remove the restrictions on India.

Could be his time to collect some due "kickbacks" from deal signed during his era! I am well familiar with the indians "commission" schemes..They have basically ruined the business fabric in Saudi Arabia with their illegal incentives plugins!

He permitted an awful lot of H1-B, which led to eventual disaster in the American IT job market as well as product quality!

And Obama is like a ball rolling here and there.... :hitwall:

Agreed.

But the foundations of the relationship have already been established.

There is bipartisan consensus in US about the importance of Indo-US relations.

For example, just compare Hillary Clinton's statements .... to those coming from Bill Clinton's administration between 1992 to 2000.

I distinctly remember how Bill Clinton used to interact with Narasimha Rao .... it was plain condescending, to say the least.
(btw.. Atal Bihari was much more robust to stand up to Clinton).

And.. then the new world of relationship, how George Bush and Manmohan Singh took it together.

True .. Obama is not exactly George Bush.

But the foundations of the Indo-US relationship are already set .... they do seem to proceeding to be a defining relationship at the global level ...... yes, with Obama and beyond Obama.
