A French woman has been found alive but suffering frostbite and unable to walk on Nanga Parbat, while rescuers are still trying to reach another Polish climber, both of whom have been missing since Thursday while attempting to scale the mountain, Polish media reported on Sunday.

Two Pakistan Army helicopters began an operation Saturday on the request of the Polish and French embassies to rescue the two European mountain climbers after they got stuck while trying to summit the 8,126-meter-tall Nanga Parbat, the ninth-highest peak in the world.

Karrar Haidri, a top official of the Pakistan Alpine Federation, said four volunteers from a Polish expedition were airlifted to the Nanga Parbat base camp and dropped close to the two stranded climbers ─ Tomasz Mackiewicz of Poland and Elisabeth Revol of France.

He said the volunteers had spotted the two mountaineers, and were climbing to 7,000 meters above sea level to try to reach them.

Later Saturday, Polish media, which have followed the developments closely, reported that Revol had been found alive, citing tweets by a friend and other sources. She had frostbite on her feet, could not walk and the operation to get her off the mountain was expected to be difficult.

Mackiewicz reportedly is suffering from snow blindness and altitude sickness. A day earlier his sister was quoted in Polish media as saying it would be a miracle if he survives.

Earlier in the day Haidri said the local weather was bad, with temperatures at -60 degrees Celsius at the height where the climbers are stuck.

The last one. Well done to the Pak armed forces. Never disappoint.

A French climber stranded on top of one of Pakistan's most deadly mountains is safe after a dramatic rescue operation.

The search for her Polish climbing partner, however, has been called off.

Elisabeth Revol and Tomasz Mackiewicz were climbing Nanga Parbat, nicknamed "Killer Mountain", when they got stuck at 7,400m (24,280ft) on Friday.

An elite climbing team from Poland who were on nearby K2 rushed to the rescue, scaling the mountain overnight to find Ms Revol alive.

Four members of the team, who had been attempting the first winter ascent of K2 - the second highest mountain in the world - were brought to Nanga Parbat by a Pakistani military helicopter.

They were dropped off about 1,000 metres below the lost climbers' last known location.

Denis Urubko and Adam Bielecki began the climb while Jaroslaw Botor and Piotr Tomala established a camp.

Contact with Ms Revol and Mr Mackiewicz had been lost as the team climbed towards their last known location.

Then, in the early hours of Sunday morning local time, the climbing team's Facebook page announced: "Elisabeth Revol found!"

Tomasz Mackiewicz, however, had been separated from Ms Revol. Earlier reports said that he had been suffering from frostbite and snow blindness.

Ludovic Giambiasi, a friend of Ms Revol's who had been in sporadic contact with her, said the climbers would rest for an hour or two in the open air before beginning the descent with Ms Revol.

"The rescue for Tomasz is unfortunately not possible," he wrote. "Because of the weather and altitude it would put the life of rescuers in extreme danger.

"It's a terrible and painful decision. We are in deep sadness. All our thoughts go out to Tomek's family and friends. We are crying."

All five climbers still alive are expected to be evacuated by helicopter to the town of Skardu later on Sunday.

A crowdfunding campaign to pay for the rescue attempt had raised more than $100,000 (£74,000) by the time the news of Ms Revol's safety emerged.

Masha Gordon, who set up the crowdfunding campaign, posted an update to the 4,000 supporters: "we are crying from happiness".

Mountaineers nicknamed Nanga Parbat, in northern Pakistan, "Killer Mountain" after more than 30 climbers died trying to conquer it before the first successful summit in 1953.

I was reading on reddit that Pak Gov. delayed the rescue by one day due to GOP for the rescue and later on demanded more amount?

Thats nonsense..

The climbers also have insurance which covers rescue operation etc.. in worse case scenario...

Such rescue operations are pnly delayed ... due to uncontrollable natural factors like weather.

Even if its true whats wrong in it. These climbers are not our headache, they are fully aware of what they are walking into. Karakorams deadliest trekking routes are well known acorss the world and every climber here setting foot on these mountains knows he is not just climbing he is walking straight into the mouth death n i slucky if he escapes.

If despite knwoing all these circumstances u willingly come to hike then dont cry if hist country doenst provide u rescuing services, its not our job.

Its so funny each year these wannabe daredevil climbers come with over confidence that they are brave to face everything to summit worlds deadliest mountains but right when they are stuck they cry like pansies and cry for paksitan army for rescue and help.
if u dont value ur own life noone else should as well.

If i were in charge of army iwould have let them die there.

I totally agree here except the part of letting them die there. I would love to see tourism flourishing in Pakistan.
IMO Pak gov must have standard rescue charges for foreigners in these areas. Would recommend to be 3x more than actual cost so when these wanna be batman are stuck here, there insurances are there to give us GOP to start the rescue efforts timely. My concern was only the time if it is true that we have delayed this rescue due to money. Saving a life is worth any money.
Thanks for replying.:-)
