The top-selling sports car in the U.S. now hit a new milestone: It's also now the top-selling sports car on Earth.

That ranking is according to Ford analysis of IHS Markit new vehicle registration data in the sports car segment.

Ford took the Mustang to international markets in 2015. In 2016, more than 150,000 Mustangs were sold, according to IHS Markit new vehicle registration data. Overall global sales increased 6 percent over 2015, fueled by international market growth up 101 percent with almost 45,000 Mustang vehicles sold outside the United States.

"The legacy of Mustang continues to grow, and in places it never reached before," said Mark Schaller, Ford Mustang marketing manager, in a news release.

"We continue to make it available in new markets, and drivers in those markets continue to respond with resounding approval."

The Mustang's debut in 1964 touched the Baby Boomer generation. Since then, Ford's adaptations of the iconic production muscle car kept it at the top of U.S. sales charts. Ford now plans to introduce a redesigned 2018 model that will be available for sale this fall.

That new model also will head into its global markets, creating additional export opportunities for the Dearborn-based automaker.

Ford's data shows more than 395,000 sixth-generation Mustangs have been produced at Flat Rock, Michigan, Assembly Plant since 2015 and of that, 98,000 have been shipped to customers outside of the United States.

From 2015 to 2016, Ford doubled the percentage of exports to 17.5 percent and the company expects export growth to continue, reaching 30 percent for the 2017 Mustang.

Hot markets for the vehicle include: Germany and China, as well as smaller nations such as New Caledonia, Gibraltar and Bonaire.

It is now available in 140 countries across all continents other than Antarctica. This year, availability of the 2018 Mustang will expand to six new countries, including Brazil, the Palau Islands and the Ivory Coast, with three additional markets still to be announced.

Beautiful and solid car. Love to have it one day as a leisure vehicle.

if money is not an issue, I probably would not go for Mustang....
Buying a car is not merely about money, even if money is not an issue.

Personally, I have never been enamored of the 'supercar' styling like that of Ferrari and Lamborghini. Visually, my taste leans more towards the DB9 or DB9-ish, so if I have the money, I would get a DB9 for the city and a Grand Cherokee Hellcat for the weekend road trip. Not counting my bikes, of course.

Why not DB11? DB9 is about to be classic, DB11 is just like DB9, but with more modern element put into it, then it's a bit of a gap than the original DB9 made 10 years ago tho.

If I have money, I will probably go fo r a Swedish supercar (like Koenigsegg) Ferrari or Lambo is too square for my taste, it's like a default for supercar, like yeah I hit the lottery, let's get a Ferrari tomorrow.

Whichever version available at the time I have the money -- which is never.

Really...I do like the front engine rear wheel drive layout and I think the late DB series styling got the proper balance, visually speaking.

Now, if money is really no issue and if I have the engineering skills, I would definitely hack up the Tim Burton Batmobile with a real turbine engine. That long front end and wide rear like that of a dragster. The turbine engine would come from something like the UH-1 coupled to a pair of transaxle, front and rear. Absolute chick magnet.

........Well DB series is quite sensible, but if you are into their looks, you can get a Jag for half off, same design, just different engine and different badge. But if you are going after the build and the brand, then yeah, you will need drop about 200G for that.

LOL, my brother actually did that in Boeing Field some years ago, he and his team got a turbine engine from an old jet and bolted it on a Pick up truck. It goes like wooooosh.

maybe the best selling sports car but its sure is the ugliest looking sports car

Ford mustang is wrongly called a sports car. Ferrari, Posche 911, Maserarti and Bugatti are sports cars. Camaro, Corvette, and Mustangs are actually Muscle cars. Muscle cars are not supposed to be sleek as sports cars

It used to be the definition was a 2 seater (or actually maybe a 1 seater). Then the 911 came out with a back seat and people started changing the definition to sneak it in. Now everything is blurry and the definition is more linked to elitism than a specific definition.

So technically a Mazda Miata is closer to the definition of a sportscar vs the 911.

Certainly the 2 seater Corvette is.

I maybe wrong, but I think in that venture, they were using exhaust thrust.

Me and some guys at work talked about this some yrs ago. One guy who worked in facility maintenance, he maintains the vacuum pumps for our fab, stated that the best form of immediate locomotive is still mechanical. The turbine engine with its ability to produce constant torque once it is fully spooled up coupled with a transmission to the wheels should be what The Batman want. Plus, the turbine can produce enough electricity to power the wheels individually should the Batmobile enter 'stealth' mode. The electric motors in each wheel would be most efficient once the vehicle is already in motion. All the scoops on the Batmobile helps to cool the exhaust stream. There could be an afterburner but that would be for any last resort situation when instant power is needed.

I'm not a fan of today's retro 1960's cars.
I prefer the sleeker 1990's cars.

What kid wouldn't drool over having a car like this!

You can't tell from the angle of this pic but the windshield was so huge and sloped at such an extreme angle that it curved OVER the engine. You'd pop the hood and half the engine was under the glass.

220px-1993ChevroletCamaroZ28-003.jpg

I LOL'd everytime I popped the hood.

I used to own a 1988 Formula, the 305 not the 350. I bought a 2001 WS6 brand new with the RAM AIR induction scoops on the hood, 6-speed HURST short throw shifter etc. Pontiac stopped making them in 2002 so I made sure I got in on that before it ended. I still have it today with 32K miles on it. Still drives like a dream and even with just 325HP (compared to my buddy's 2016 Mustang Roush with 550HP lol), it's got a kick and handles like a dream. :-) Performance suspension on all these Firebirds and Transams were always great road huggers, even on the toughest turns. Cops never care when I'm in my truck, but whenever I get in this thing, even if it wasn't red, they bust my balls left and right! :D

To be honest with you, I have no idea, he send me some photo of the stuff he was working on, and I ended up deleting them because I am not really interest in what he does :) beside one time he told me that when they work night shift, they aren't really working but mucking around and playing TV Games and remote control cars in the workshop.

lol.......much like what he did when I start talking about history to him.

Lucky guy with the WS6!! Don't sell it. It will be worth a lot someday!!

Road grip especially with those 17 inch wide rims was awesome. I got the chrome 5 spoke SLP Firehawk rims and I can't remember the size I put on them (285s?) with Dunlop SP Sports but it looked totally badass from the back. You could really hit the exit ramps hard! I had friends who had the rims where you bolted the tires to them so they wouldn't slip around the rim at the drag strip.

gallery_1193_320_1120026381.jpg

I think these are more than 285 (like 315s) but you can get the idea. Totally badass!!!

Although driving in the rain was a bit spooky. After I got married I sold it to some teen whose dad paid for it. I had the dad sign a piece of paper explaining this was a dangerous car and he shouldn't let him drive it in bad weather unless he wants to see him wrapped around a tree.

BTW I also painted the rear axle and the rear suspension arms. They had gotten rusty looking quick.
