For the first time Pakistan to start exports from Gwadar next week

Minister for Ports and Shipping, Kamran Michael has said Pakistan is going to start exports from Gwadar Port for first time, during next week whereas till now it was being used for imports only.

He stated this while addressing the Pakistani community and media at a reception organized by Pakistan High Commission London, according to a message received here on Thursday.

Pakistan’s High Commissioner to UK, Syed Ibne Abbas welcomed the Minister as well as the community to the High Commission.

He requested the Minister to inform the community about the benefits of Gwadar Port and Pakistan China Economic Corridor (PCEC).

The High Commissioner also congratulated Zubair Gul, who was present on the occasion, on his appointment as Commissioner for Overseas Pakistanis.

Addressing the community, the Minister said, “Pakistan China Economic Corridor, for which $ 46 billion Chinese investment has been agreed upon, will bring about unprecedented development and prosperity to the people of Pakistan.”

In order to enhance the efficacy of Gwadar Port, he said, 2281 acres of land has already been earmarked where tax-free industrial zones and ware houses would be established.

“Pakistan’s economic future is linked with successful operation of Gwadar Port as it would help increase our exports and generate economic activity in the region. All this is according to the vision of Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif.”

The Minister invited the expatriate community to take advantage of the investment opportunities in Pakistan and assured them of the safety of their investment

He also appreciated the role of Pakistani diaspora in the development of the country.

In his brief remarks on the occasion, Zubair Gul, Commissioner for Overseas Pakistanis said that he would put in his best efforts to serve the overseas Pakistanis without any discrimination.

Welcoming suggestions from the community to improve the functioning of his office, he assured the community that he would remain accessible to them to solve their problems.

Gul expressed his gratitude to the Prime Minister for reposing confidence in him.

Around 100 community members and media persons attended the reception.

This is old news now as it was revealed few days ago.

But it is more a strategic movement rather than economical measure. Gwadar is still not connected with upper Pakistan and the Makran Coastal Highway connect Gwadar with another port city of Karachi so there is no logic of docking your ships at Gwadar for import or exports if it has to ultimately go through rest of the Pakistan via Karachi. This is the reason why Gwadar has not been successful so far since past many years. We do off-load some ships at Gwadar for formality purposes as they don't want to shut down the project with attractive future potential. Now after the commitment made by China they just want to increase little bit of movement until road infrastructure is ready and Gwadar is connected with rest of the Pakistan, hence the practice of export.

First export ship to embark on journey from Gwadar Port

ISLAMABAD: The first consignment, comprising fish exports, is expected to depart from Gwadar Port on Monday, formally kicking off commercial activities, said Federal Secretary for Ports and Shipping Khalid Pervez.

The Chinese Overseas Ports Holding Company is responsible for operation of the port; officials from the company would be present on the occasion along with others including Federal Minister for Ports and Shipping Kamran Micheal.

On Sunday, the Chinese Overseas Shipping Company (COSCO) will bring empty containers to the port before they will be loaded with fish, marking the formal inauguration of export from the deep sea port.

The Chinese have taken control of the activities for export of their products to Central Asian countries and Middle East in the long run, part of China-Pakistan Economic Corridor Project, which was recently kicked off by Chinese President Xi Jinping during his last-month visit to Pakistan.

Import activity from the Gwadar Port began in 2009. Since then, cargoes containing fertilisers and wheat have been imported through this port by the government.

However, the private sector has yet to start its export/import from the Gwadar Port, hindered because of the connecting roads being under construction. The Economic Coordination Committee of cabinet had decided in 2009 that the Trading Corporation of Pakistan(TCP) should use Gwadar for the import of wheat and fertiliser via the newly establish port aimed at starting the operation gradually.

A senior officer in the Ministry of Ports and Shipping said that the Gwadar Port has been given to the Chinese company on the basis of the ‘Land Lord Port Concept’ on 9% gross revenue for the next 40 years. He explained that the company will pay Pakistan from its gross revenue and not on the net profit.

The officer said that at this stage, fish cargo can only be exported via Gwadar port as there are only fish processing factories in the area.

The officer believed that it will take decades for the port to become profitable due to the geographical location of Gwadar.

Port Qasim, he mentioned, had become formally operational in 1979 and reached its breakeven point after two decades despite being situated in the business and industrial hub of the country.
