What's new

For a change I dont Agree with Imran Khan here: Karachi cannot be a separate province, says Imran

If that is the only solution, i highly urge that a Resolution be brought in the Sindh Assembly and passed with a 3/4th Majority as per the Constitution.
This is the only constitutional way.
But mqm only want to exploit the karachi province issue. Thy will never opt or go for any constitutional way. As exploitation suits them and their politics.

I think as important as Karachi is for Pakistani Nation, it might be a good idea to give it a special status such as a "Federal Territory" and its Law and Order situation should be in the hand of Federal Government.
Federal gov is already doing an operation in karacahi as ppp mqm mafia networks have complete control over police.

A general comment about provinces. Pakistan needs more provinces... and lots of them but we should make provinces based on administrative units according to a certain criteria based on population and area. One solution could be declare all the divisions as provinces but I think we can do better than that by following a systematic approach. Provinces MUST NOT be made on linguistic, racial or any other discriminatory basis. And if we still need some provinces....we should from our neighbours in east (east Punjab, Haryana, Hyderabad, Delhi, Rajasthan etc) and west (all of Afghanistan essentially).

Administratively Karachi deserves to be separate but unfortunately such a move will be disastrous because of politics. the entities which want a separate Karachi is not because of better administration, they want it so they can continue their militant and corrupt practices with more freedom.

So although its a good aidea but we dont have people who can be trusted or the aptitude to make it something fruitful.

So a NO!!!!

Best thing would be to re introduce the local body Nazim system that was introduced in Musharaf era.

Some members believe that Karachi Province would later turn into Demand for separate Country can you imagine such stupidity????

Its all based on Administrative Requirement as Karachi is already DIVIDED within Sindh as well so its nothing but providing Karachi what it deserve to have i.e. Some Degree of Self Governance so that Karachiite could get accommodated in the Process as well as so as new comers in the City..

That was my point, what do you do when Karachi wants to be an "independent" country? Its a big metropolitan city, that's it. Not a state or province. This is like someone in Houston saying let's divide Houston into a different state. That's effing stupid. What's next? Lahore, Islamabad, Quetta all wanting to be separate provinces?

Do people realize there is a LOT of money (billions) that go into managing a new state and all? Grow your country's economy first, setup good business, all this noise can be dealt with later. There is barely things moving in the right direction but somehow people in Pakistan, are too focused on "wants" and not on "needs"!!

If Delhi can be a state in India, then Why not karachi become a state in Pakistan.

Delhi's Population is 22 Million, which is similar in size to Karachi
Delhi Contributes 5% of India's GDP while Karachi contributes 25% of Pakistan's GDP

Because we have overwhelming number of moron in Pakistan.

If that is the only solution, i highly urge that a Resolution be brought in the Sindh Assembly and passed with a 3/4th Majority as per the Constitution.

Yeah get it passed from Sindh Assembly. same sindh assembly that is filled with same feudal and corrupt lot of interior Sindh.

Martial law is no solution and why only for Karachi.
Karachites have every right to select who ever party they like.but at the same time those parties should not be allowed for target killing, bhatta khori and organized crime under political umbrella.
But would they care? Karachi's politics and violance is driven upon the faultlines of ethnicity and sectarianism. And as long as these two faultlines remain present, There's no other way of establishing peace other than the rule of iron hand.

Islamabad is Capital Territory just like Karachi use to be back in 1960s and during those days Karachi saw lots of development that it actually deserve but since it was made part of Sindh Administratively things became upside down. The bottom line is that the Major Grievance of Karachi is that its local Populous are being MARGINALIZED in handling their own City Affairs even and the whole City is being watch over by non Residence who have no roots in Karachi hence many of them try to reap as much from it as they can before leaving. If this Problem is solved then why would residence even wants to separate from Pakistan???In the end of the day whole Karachi's economy depends on Pakistan so there is no reason for City locals to hit their foot on their own by demanding such a thing on the first place.

This is the major Problem Pakistan is focusing on its National Securities and Insecurities more then Improvements required for the country to progress. This mindset is taking the tool and except for one or two provinces every other provinces are suffering.

These Fault lines would even strengthen if Karachi remain as it is. Sindh Politics is notoriously Corrupt and they would like to keep it that way because they dont want Karachi to surpass their Interior Sindh as if it happen they would have to INCREASE the allocations of Karachi at the expense of Interior Sindh. That has been the real game being played here since 1970s.

Totally agreed. It is the people who will decide what should be their status. In my opinion in order to diminish the linguistic discrimination more provinces should be made so that we people do not call them punjabi, sindhi, balochi ar pathans but Pakistanis.
Pakistan doesnt have Linguistic Discrimination. Its more of a Regional one then a linguistic and Sindh is way more notorious for that as they have assigned separate Quotas for Urban and Interior all based on Population census of 1970s rather then today. Until this remain Karachi would keep suffering.
Yes, Gilgit Baltistan is demanding a provincial status since its independence from the dogras. And the ruling party ( PML-N) came into the GB assembly with the manifesto of making GB the 5th Province.
They deserve to be part of Mainstream because they have been Sidelined more then enough in the name of Disputed territory.

I think Language divides Pakistan into provinces. Regional discrimination can thus be related as linguistic discrimination.

IK is not capable of making any tough decisions; it is as simple as this.

Karachi is twice the size of London and London has 32 Boroughs (councils) each having their funds too I guess. When I go to London it feels like 4 cities South, West, East and North. Now if you take Karachi, that’s double the size and needs to be broken down in Councils to be able to manage, how many thats for the government to decide. It needs to get status of a federal city and should not be included in any Province, just like Islamabad isn’t.

Now populatio of karachi some says 2 crore some says 4 crore.

Why cant karachi be separate province
South Sindh Province

They dont want karachi to develop

SUKKUR: Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan while speaking to the press on Friday said that Karachi could not become a separate province.

The PTI chairman said that the Muttahida Qaumi Movement supremo Altaf Hussain and PPP Co-Chairman Asif Zardari had "divided the province among themselves and pitted Urdu-speaking and Sindhi people against each other," receiving votes on the basis of this hatred.

"After getting the votes, they both collaborated in money laundering and now have money in foreign countries," he said.

"How else is Altaf Hussain surviving abroad for so long?" he questioned. "Who will catch him? Zardari's money is lying abroad. And now Nawaz Sharif can't say anything to Zardari because his own money is lying abroad."

The PTI leader was of the opinion that the "collusion for common interests occurred in the name of democracy."

He said that all the top politicians have corruption cases against them, adding, "The top two politicians who take turns in Sindh ─ one in London, the other spends his time between London and Dubai ─ have property in billions and large bank balances. How can they spend so much time in London? Ask me. I have lived there and played professional cricket in England for 18 years ... Where does the money come from? It is Sindh's money, it is Pakistan's money," he said.

He said 70 per cent of the nation's gas and revenue comes from the province, and yet the Rs900 billion spent on 'development' in the last five years of governance was nowhere to be seen.

He lamented his absence from the province earlier, saying, "Sindh is in greatest need of change," and recounted an earlier visit to the province. "The poverty I saw in Sindh, there has been no improvement from when I last saw it 19 years ago. The biggest reason for this is corruption."

"Who is paying the price of corruption?" he asked, adding, "The people of Sindh."

"Where there should be progress, there is none ─ and the biggest reason for this is corruption. Corruption exists because there is no law. There is no law because the powerful don't want there to be any law ─ he holds himself above the law. The powerful are unjust towards the common man. That is why there is a need for a campaign for justice," Khan explained.

He spoke of the need to ally with the common man. "In 1988, all the big leaders were on one side and the common man on the other. They helped Benazir Bhutto win. That's why the people of Sindh can be confident that the PTI has come to do what Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto did at one time by standing up for people's rights."

Khan was optimistic that once they were given reason for this confidence, the people would stand with the PTI.

He gave instances in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa where power was devolved to the people by means of local governments, and spoke of a safety commission to overlook police operations to avoid exploitation of the common man by means of the police.

"Why is the state of roads [in Sindh] this way? Because the people at the top get money and it never reaches the bottom. It goes straight to Dubai," he said.

"The people of Sindh are like slaves ─ they have no authority. If they are looted, they have nowhere to turn. We will provide a system with an unbiased police force. We will strengthen institutions and empower the people ... We will give those rights to Sindh that the rulers of Sindh have not given," he said.

He said the people of Sindh faced problems similar to those of KP. "What do the people of Sindh want? That the centre does operate against their interests, that their water is not stolen. This is also an issue of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. KP doesn't get it's full share of water, power or gas. In KP, they can't get their allocation of water because a stream ─ which has been in the pipeline for over 20 years now ─ has yet to be constructed, so all their water goes elsewhere."

Speaking about the police force in Sindh, the PTI leader said the force had deteriorated because it had not been left apolitical. "Whatever wrongdoings they need done, they do them through the police."

"People had hopes [from the PPP], but Zardari did what a military dictator could not do ─ he harmed the PPP in ways others could not achieve," he said.

Speaking of the need to rid the province of corruption, Khan said "The country will reach a point where it will no longer be viable ─ in a sea of poverty, there will be an island of rich people. Corruption is a tax on the poor and the common man. Money is stolen from the common man ─ money that should be spent on schools, hospitals and roads. This money goes into the hands of a few, and then it goes to Dubai," he said.

"Why are people in Sindh happy with the Rangers? Because there is peace, target killing has been reduced and for the first time, someone is going after big corrupt personalities," the PTI Chairman said, adding "But this is what politicians should be doing."

"Now that Nawaz Sharif is coming after Zardari in corruption cases through Dr Asim, Zardari is making a noise," he said.

When asked about who the party will be campaigning with in Sindh, Imran Khan said "We will pick those who want to make a change with us, not those who will become a hindrance. It is the first time an Ehtesaab Commission arrested its own sitting minister ─ people who are corrupt will be afraid of siding with us."

"The people of Sindh have been watching [the party in KP], they know what is happening. Corruption has decreased, the Ehtesaab cell is working, police is apolitical, powers have been devolved to the local governments, schools are being fixed ... now we are fixing hospitals. There has been change."

Karachi cannot be a separate province, says Imran @ Pakistan Herald
Imran Khan is right that Karachi alone can't be a separate province. But he is wrong if he thinks Karachi should remain part of Sindh. In my opinion Karachi should be made a Federal City.
