It is natural that haters will pick any excuse to put you down. But the problem is, we ourself have made Dhaka to look much poorer and uglier than it should be by our own bad taste. We think Rickshaw as a cultural icon, we enjoy riding them and are oblivious to the damage they are causing by worsening the traffic jam as well as image of the city.Dhaka's narrow road is not capable of handling hundreds of thousands of rickshaw without a consequence. It is hampering the growth of motorized three wheeler, mini bus or taxi service from growing up and made the entire city dependent on it.Because of easy opportunity to earn a good money without any capital, it attract all the uneducated and pennyless people from across the country to Dhaka. This is also the same case with all those garments factory around Dhaka.Oh such poor souls ! ! ! trying to find own little happiness in finding other's problem
These two labor intensive job for poor people which concentrated in and around Dhaka have made the the city as a dumping ground for all the poorest and uneducated labor from across the country.Out of 20 million people in the city, at least 7-8 million are the rickshaw puller, garments worker and their family. They are the reason for the huge presence of slum in Dhaka. It is no coincidence that, Bangladesh have higher urban poverty rate than rural.Which is not the case with other regional countries.Unless we gradually phase out rickshaw and move the garment's factory away from Dhaka, this city's major problem like overcrowdedness, traffic jam, image problem will not solve. There are many countries in the world which are poorer than Bangladesh but have better looking capital city than ours .Even Indian have managed to make their cities much more orderly and pleasant looking.Indian cities don't look that poor and their road are not roamed by the poorly attired, uneducated, labor class people clogging the road with run down rickshaw or malnurished girls rushing to garments factories. even though poverty rate is higher there than Bangladesh.
Look at the beautiful capital of Cambodia, Phnom Penh, a country with somewhat lesser per capita income than Bangladesh.
