Five marla house owners protest against issuance of property tax notices

RAWALPINDI: The Excise and Taxation department has issued notices to the owners of one, two, three and five marla houses for the payment of property tax and the move is being protested by the affectees.

The tax notices had been sent to thousands of property owners in the city and five marla house owners have also been issued notices despite the exclusion of five marla property from property tax.

During former president Pervaiz Musharraf’s tenure, five marla houses were exempted from property tax but now the owners of the mentioned category have again been served notices for the payment of property tax and its outstanding dues.

An owner of a one marla house said that he received tax notice of Rs 13,000 against his one marla property while the notice also said that if he paid tax of Rs 7,500, then the remaining tax would be exempted.

The owners of five marla properties have appealed to Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif to save them from the wrath of the excise department officials who have threatened to seal their houses if dues were not submitted within time.

They questioned the authorities as to why they were being harassed for something they were exempted from.

Officials from the Excise and Taxation department stated that audit paras had been made regarding the outstanding dues upon orders issued in the year 2012 and notices had been issued, but no strict actions would be taken against the defaulters.

yes indeed 25sq ydrs = 225 sq ft. Compare it with those who live in slums and dwellings generally known as Jhopar Pati (sorry dont know alternate word for it in english). Those who own even 1 marla land are better then these people living jhopar pati. Incidentally, many living in jhopar pati are also rich, rich with the money of crime.

Taxation system in the world is now obsolete. people have hidden sources of income so a new methodology should be adopted. concept of taxing the rich and supporting the poor is ultimately misused by lower and upper most class. Only people in between become victim of this taxation system. Most of them accept it because there is no way out or they cannot avoid it. Only way to develop sense of belonging among masses is by directly taxing each and everyone individual, quantum is immaterial. Indirect taxes shifts the pinch on product cost. Only answer is all transactions through banking channel even road side vendors. And tax on banking transactions. There will be no need for any further taxation. Those who will have more in and out flow will pay more taxes. If that happens, we will be surprised to know that the panwala and ban kabab wala at the corner of street will end up paying more taxes then those among us, living on salaries and driving company cars. One of the dahi baray wala got his son admitted in aitchison, because he runs 8 rairahs (kiosk would be bigger thing) of dahi bara in different areas of Lahore and earn more than any executives. Giving this example here does not in any way imply as to why his son should study in Aitchison, but to indicate as to how much money, those apparently looking poor, can earn. Its their lifestyle which creates an image of they being poor.
