LCA Tejas Handed Over To IAF, Production Up To 16 A Year

Production of India’s Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas is likely to increase to 16 aircraft a year from 8 at present following the handing over of the aircraft to the Indian Air Force today.


Defence Minister Manohar Parikkar formally handed over the indigenously made fighter to the IAF Chief Arup Raha marking its entry into squadron service of the IAF.

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has proposed to scale up production to roll out 16 aircraft a year at a cost of $2 billion. HAL will invest 50 per cent, while the IAF and the Indian Navy will share the rest of the cost equally as per the proposal, according to media reports.

The Indian Defense Minister, Manohar Parrikar had last month stated that the Final Operational Clearance for Tejas is expected by the year-end.

Tejas got its first Initial Operational Clearance (IOC-I) in January 2011 from HAL. The aircraft had some limitation in combat performance, turnaround time and weaponization and was referred for R&D refinement.

IOC-II was granted in December 2013 after extensive flight trails for weather, armament and weapon delivery capabilities and IAF started flight tests.

The LCA project has so far cost $2.75 billion dollars to the exchequer and started in 1983.

The handing over of the aircraft is seen as crucial as IAF is looking it as a replacement for its aging Russian Made MiG-21s.

F117A, v22, fa2 sea harrier made of Composit materials like lca crashed. Problematical in flight and very very difficult to repair.
F35, still is weapon integration phase spending hundreds of billions $.

What was the cause of crash ? was it delamination ?Composites are widely used in civil airliners as well.

My Dear Friends -

Few months ago, I gave details on Stage development of this A/c. Thank you to those friends who have given value added comments.

a) In 1971 before war started Pakistan Radio used to broadcast shows where "Gnat" was rubisshed. The bird was Tiny as compared to PAF a/c.

b) Gnat performed and exceeded our expectations for an A/c with Loitter time of 15 min (Hi-Lo-Hi). on full load of 1500 kgs.

c) Tejas /LCA might be on the same pathway.....with all the development going on.Remember MIG21 Bison is still a formidable opponent, so LCA will get enough time too.

d) My Indian friends should remember LCA will never be in Su 30 or Mig 29 Class. But, if armed with Derby, Python 5, JDAMs and lightening PODs will meet our requirements.

Also, remember in normal usage Alpha with 20 Degrees is more than enough, Days of WVR Combat or Dog Fight are Over. When you have a Wand to spank the Dog from 40 Km/50 Km why should you to 7-8 Km close and prove your "Bravery".

Tejas will not face F22 , in Combat formation of Mirage/29 or 30 it will do the Task Assigned for all Jets available in subcontinent.

Also Tejas will enjoy "Duck Hunting" for Many A/Cs names of which cant be spelled.....

IMO, this seems highly optimistic. China and Pakistan combined only built 12 SP JF-17s between 2007 and 2010. HAL has never built a fighter jet whereas CAC has built lots of J-10.

IMO, first squadron of Tejas by 2019, first fight of Tejas Mk 2 by 2021.

Also, note that even though SP-1 is considered an SP, it is not really SP because it still needs a number of modifications such as new nose cone, radar, missiles, engine from America and Israel before it can become operational in IAF.

LCA still needs years to configure sams bvr and stand off wapons to match great old mig 21 the best flying coffin of whole world.
Composit manufaturing have great risks in repairing which failed many great designed comosit manufatured jet in history...lets see.

Maybe because of hard work that LCA has flown with a trainer and a naval version (with it's own trainer). JF 17 is supposed to have been 'inducted'- hell close to a dozen LCA's have been flying for years and still not considered 'inducted'. Somehow JF 17 miraculously inducted even without a proper working trainer.
Several spinoffs of LCA are in advanced stages of delivery including a home grown AESA radar, no such deliveries seen in your pet project. 'Composite manufacturing' means we don't ned to 'repair' it, and in order to avoid any consequences we have tested that for decades too. Hell all our ALH are made in commposites, so we pretty much know how to avoid such problems.

Yes it late But already its superior to the main Sino/pak Thunder block 1 by virtue of

superior quadruplex FBW unstable design making far more agile & lighter than the stable thunder
better western engine from USA over the smokey low service life Russian engine powering thunder
better superior Israeli & indian weapons and radar & ew suites
LCA comes with the ELBIT DASH 5 HMS system thunder has none of this block one.

Only adding this to respond to constant trolling from some members across the border/loc who wont stop trolling despite having never built a three wheeled car yet a lone fighter on indengious origin
