KAPURTHALA: The first high speed train with a speed of 160 kilometer per hour will run on Delhi-Agra section in the first week of November this year as Kapurthala Rail Coach Factory (RCF) is all set to roll out first rake of fourteen coaches of the train by the end of October this year.

RCF General Manager Parmod Kumar said that shells of the first rake of high speed coaches had been manufactured and the work was going on at fast pace to roll out the first rake by the end of October this year so that the first high speed train could run on Delhi-Agra section.
RCF engineers in consultations with Research Development and Standard organizations (RDSO) had made some changes in these coaches in designing of coupler system for more smoother ride than Shatabdi and Rajdhani coaches, installation of smoke and fire detection system, and automatic sliding of inner doors besides TV infotainment system in the executive chair cars with LED fittings on the back of chair cars.
He said that the approximate cost of one high speed coach would be between Rs 2.25 to 2.50 crore.

RCF had started working on designing the high speed coaches capable of running at a speed of 200 kilometer per hour by making some changes like automatic outer doors, changes in braking system and improved vestibules.
He said that high speed coaches manufactured in RCF for Shatabdi and Rajdhani express trains are capable of running at the optimum speed of 160 kilometer per hour.

The railway board and officials of railway department had already conducted a trial on these coaches on Delhi-Agra section at a speed of 160 kilometer and covered the 200 kilometer distance in 99 minutes few days ago, he said.

He also said initially speed of these trains would be 160 kilometer on select rail routes and gradually speed would be enhanced up to 200 kilometer after upgrading the signaling system and barricading the area.

What powers these semi-high speed trains

Locomotive
Presently WAP 5 loco is used for all high speed trains (including Shatabdi and certain Rajdhani express trains). This loco was developed by ABB for IR and is now license manufactured in India. The loco is rated at 5,350 HP and can zip upto 225 kmph where track conditions permit. This has been tested on Indian tracks upto a speed of 184 kmph.

Recent high speed test run done on NDLS Agra section one such loco was used and the same class will power all such High speed trains that government has planned.


Coaches

Indian Railway presently uses Linke Hofmann Busch (or LHB) coaches for almost all Shatabdi, Duronto and Rajdhani class trains. These coaches are capable to run upto 200 kmph and at the moment license manufacutred at RCF Kapurthala and ICF.

Track and Signalling

A major investment on High speed rail network goes on Track and Signalling. High speed tracks have gentler curves and grades. Also continuously welded rails are used along with heavier rails to allow higher dynamic forces. The tracks are cordoned off to prevent trespassing.
Presently Government is looking for certain sectors to allow such high speed services in near future.

Once implemented, these sections will allow the above high speed services, increasing comfort of passengers.

Well at present any train having end to end average speed greater than 60 kmph is classified as Superfast. New Delhi Mumbai Rajdhai tops the list as fastest train in India on basis of highest average speed) and Delhi Bhopal Shatabdi as fastest speed achieved (150 kmph) between Delhi and Agra.
We need to invest in separating goods and passenger tracks as a first step to increase average speed, after which with better rolling stock, average speed of ordinary trains to can be raised. Also it would be a good idea to have separate tracks for long distance crack trains and slower moving and frequent stopping trains to avoid bottlenecks.

this is what you think??? the map is showing india without two states!! J&K is shown as a port of pakistan and AP is shown as part of china... and you are taking it lightly?? do you know, showing maps like this a criminal offence in india.

Sudhirji, Here is some information


Electric locomotives
Primary supplier Chittaranjan locomotive Works (CLW) & Bharat Heavy electrical Limited (BHEL). Currently the locos manufactured are WAP 4 (5,000 HP, Conventional DC tap changing technology), WAP 5 (5,350 HP, 3 phase AC locomotive), WAP 7 (6,300 HP 3 phase AC locomotive) in passenger class and WAG 7 (5,000 HP, Conventional DC tap changing technology), WAG 9 (6,000 HP 3 phase AC locomotive) in freight class category. Amongst these BHEL manufactures WAG 7 locomotive only.

Last Year CLW manufactured 100 WAG 7, 27 WAP 4, 93 WAG 9, 13 WAP 5 and 31 WAP 7 whereas BHEL chipped in with 38 WAG 7 (grand total of 302 locos). The target set is usually 250 assorted pieces but number varies.

Diesel locomotives

Diesel Locomotive works (Varanasi) is the primary contractor with some railway workshops at Parel and Diesel Modernization Works Patiala chipping in. DLW produces only EMD 3 phase locomotives (WDG 4, WP 4B, both rated at 4,500 HP). it will shortly start production of WDG 5 locomotive (again EMD 3 phase loco rated at 5,500 HP).
Last year DLW manufactured 190 locomotives (WDG 4: 158, WDP 4B: 31 and WDG 5: 1 prototype).
Other units like DMW assemble old technology ALCO derivative locos (based on ALCOs 251 engine design) such as WDM 3D (rated at 3,300 HP).
Total Diesel loco production is around 225 no.s.

Coaches


As of now there are 2 class of coaches LHB and conventional ones.

Rail Coach Factory Kapurthala
About 1,600 coaches an year (600 LHB, 1000 conventional). This years target is 1,700 coaches.

Integral Coach Factory Perambur
About 1,200 coaches. they also produce metro coaches and other products such as Self propelled cars for maintenance and accident relief.

High-speed Rail not suitable for your country, to improve the quality and speed of existing railway is correct.

Well if you are talking of its utility, the traffic pattern and volume in certain sectors justify putting Hi speed network in place. That said, true high speed trains are still 5-6 years away (atleast) considering there is zero dedicated rail lines for such services.
Secondly, present scheme of things is to slowly increase the speed of trains by incremental improvements, therby increasing the throughput. this way existing tracks will support more movement.
It looks like an ad-hoc arrangement but given the financial mess IR is in right now, perhaps the best course of action. With a PM like one we have right now, we do hope all this to actually take shape sometime in near future.:cheers:

Average speed depends a lot on traffic management and siding on small station. If we can incorporate a satellite based traffic management system, we can certainly boost the average speed as we can manage the train traffic with lower distance between 2 trains. You might have witnessed a train is sidelined and parked for 15 to 20 minute to pass super fast etc.

I have posted number of time that aerodynamic shape may play a very important role in Speed and fuel/Electricity consumption. IIT Bombay had suggested that if engines are shaped aerodynamically, Same engines can pull the trains 40 KMPH faster and one loco will save 3.5 crore of electricity.

Ordinary train should speed up to 120 km, high-speed train at least 300 kilometers above.


This train is somewhere in between. This is very important for us as we can manage this speed with already existing resources with some minor changes, We do not have to spend huge amount as required by 300 KM + Speed train.
