First batch of license built T-90 tanks

I find something difficult to understand, though admittedly I am not very technical militarily like some of you veterans here.

If India can manufacture a complex piece of equipment like a main battle tank, and a nuclear submarine, why cant we also make something like the Bofors on our own?

This is in response to a newspaper article today (or yesterday?) stating that there is HUGE exercise on for purchasing the next generation of guns to replace the ageing Bofors ...... at some humungous cost to our exchequer.

Sorry for going a lil OT, but I'm hoping someone can shed some light on this.
Cheers, Doc

Hey Doc ! I see this as more of Make Or Buy decision.

To build submarine and Tanks , india always had infrastructure ..meaning factory and trained manpower..

Moreover Guns like Bofors might not be needed in large numbers..but the need is immidiate, so Buying is better option.

meanwhile Tanks are some thing India exports also already done to some African countries...

There must have been an analysis done before buying bofors like guns of the self..other wise our DRDO is one hell of a snob..it will never allow Indian Defence ministry to buy something w/o engaging them in it...they have no face to show as they goofed up Arjun tanks
and to some extent LCA..

Indian Govt has huge kitty of taxes..it is crucial for india to buy defense equipment on time...fyi.. India is the biggest Arms importer in the world.

Yeah makes sense buddy. Also much maligned as the Bofors are, my friends in the Army say that they are really excellent guns and have more than paid back what we paid for them.

Cheers, Doc

can these tanks match al-khalid in any contest

Al-Khalid wins in mobility and weight/power ratio but T-90 have technological edge on Al-khalid. Al-Khalid can outrun T-90 in desert and can withstand heat better than T-90 but T-90 has edge in armour protection. T-90 has range of 500km compare to Al-Khalid's 450km and consumes less fuel due to smaller engine.
(1200hp to 950hp)

Plus If I am correct, Al-Khalid is using 1200hp Ukranian engine, which had problem catching fire. I dont know weather they fixed it or not.

No....... ;)
The T-90 is better becoz lot of the trouble causing components have been removed ad new ones put in and the tank is more versatile and can be easily adapted and modified has a way better cannon :sniper:, Armour and also the fact it carries with is 2-4:flame: NAG antitank missiles.

Strong engine means increased weapons load and travel faster. I don't see having stronger engine is a setback for Al-khalid in any way. Regarding Range, that can be enhanced by having external fuel kit which in my opinion Chinese ztz-99 is keeping.

Senior Members, please shed some light on this aspect.
