Few months back I have said good bye to uniform. But my men, my Regiment is still there in Makeen, home town of Baitullah Mehsood, a village in South Waziristan. Baitullah Mehsood, who was accidentally killed by America in drone attack on August 5, 2009, was beyond doubt a “man” of our adversaries. However, as far as I remember by and large he was a good enemy. He was brave, man of words and excellent in negotiations. Quite often he was hung in between lust of money and power on one side and love of Pakistan the opposite.

However, his grading as chieftain of Mehsood tribe is low. He motivated young boys even from his own tribe to explode (suicide bombing) to deter his enemies. To me such a crime committed by chieftain of a tribe is unforgivable because clan leader, like President of the country is fatherly figure. This was one aspect where Baitullah did not have argument once confronted in private.

I am soldier and appreciate soldierly qualities. Taliban are brave and excellent fighters. I always told my fellow officers and soldiers to fight them like warriors, an old tradition of fighting and same taught by our Prophet (PBUH). Kill those who fight you, no “collateral damage” even if the cost is high. Kill them but don’t humiliate them. Taliban may not deserve life but deserve respect. No collective punishment, this is wrong in 21st century. Let the bunch of great warriors, Mahsood tribe know, their chieftains don’t represent them well and Pak army is not carried by sheer revenge.

In fact these were the instructions/teaching of my veteran unit officer who happens to be the Corps Commander of western front, Lt Gen Masood Aslam. Taliban, Pakistani Taliban or in fact Pakistan Dushman Taliban, have caused great loss to international peace in general and people and state of Pakistan in particular. They have inflicted huge losses to Pak Army both in men and material even they attacked GHQ. But attack on GHQ, to my mind was not a big issue. Our enemies selected important target and performed well, though their performance could not be compared with Pakistan Army’s extraordinary act of bravery while attacking at Taliban HQ at Peochar, Swat. At few occasions, I was extremely sad i.e. during burial of Shaheed General Javed Sultan while seeing the face of his old father, Feb 7, 2008, Peshawar suicide bombing 29th October, 2009, and now at Lakki Marwat bombing Jan 1, 2010, where hundreds of poor innocent people lost their lives.

But one incident has really moved me and forced me to think differently, killing of young boys in mosque at Parade Lane on Dec 4, 2009. That day, I remember, I told my mother; Mom General Masood, my unit officer’s only son has been killed while offering Friday prayer in mosque. My mother wept and wept bitterly. She knew this was a terrible loss for any father at this age. However, my grief, my line of thought was different. The way young ones were killed in mosque was more tragic than the killing itself. Clung to mosque floor with their eyes wide open unable to even cry for help were sprayed with bullets.

Oh custodian of Islam what have you done? Among them was Hashim Masood, the only son of Gen Masood. I believe if Baitullah Masood was alive even he would have not tolerated this limitless brutality of his men. Many fathers have lost their only son during this war of terror. So many families totally ruined. Each tale is worthy of mourning but Gen Masood case is different. He has been fighting Taliban like a gentleman, giving them a clean fight, continuously warning to troops no collateral damage, no collective punishment. So my grief and question is why Taliban have foul played and continue to play foul even today? What should Pakistan Army do? Who is guilty of abetment to Taliban will be analyzed and responded later. Issue at the moment is how to deal with front man i.e. Taliban? Can some one help teach Taliban, ethics of war or suggest ways how to build patience of Pak Army not to respond in same coin?

PS:Its interesting the author an ex-PA , cant stop praising TTP and even went to extent of justifying attack on army GHQ ,Rawalpindi .Most TTP attcks barring the army mosque didnt move him ,but only made him sad including latest one at Lakki Marwat where some hunderd ppl died.

No doubt , Talaban are barbarians have to war ethics but what we will say about ISAF their bombing also killing innocient citizens in Afghanistan and FATA?

War is never solution of any problem , World Leaders should try to address the root cause of International Terrorism which is Palestine occupation by Israelis. The peace can be restored only if Palestine will be liberated.

What is the link of Palestine peace with terrorism against Pakistan Army and public????Don't justify the terrorist.

Reality is that suicide attacks in Israel has now shifted to Pakistan and Iraq.

Taliban are barbarians for you because they are killing your women and children my friend. Why, is a debatable question. But the fact is that they are. The world is too large a place and our countries and our existence too small to worry about them. Let us worry about our countries first and you should worry about the existential danger staring you in the face because only after you have overcome them, will you get the time and the resources to contribute to the Palestinian cause in any which way you want.

Re the article above, while it is okay to respect the enemy, they still have to be killed and not revered, which is what I feel the writer thinks of the Taliban terrorists. I just hope that there are not too many of Officers/Ranks in PA share this thinking. At least not too many of the ones that matter......

And I agree with you that war is not a solution to any problem. It never can be. But unfortunately for us, at times, war is the only means to a solution....

my regards.

Reality is that suicide attacks in Israel has now shifted to Pakistan and Iraq.

Reality is, Israel put all palestini into a big jail called "Ghaza", so they don't recieve any supply from the outside world, and this is why Israelis are kill palestine now more freely without any fear of fall back.

So far suicide bombing of iraq & Pakistan concern, it is all US fault 1st they attack Afghanistan for their own drama of 9/11, then they attacked iraq for non-existent WMD. Not only that, then they start giving free hands to indian who pushed their money & weapon into Pakistani tribe belt. release Baitullah Masoud, when he come back to pakistan and started war agains Pakistan, rather USA. Suicide bombers are brain washed by CIA+RAW paid leaders in the name of Islam. And they then kill 100s of innocent muslims in iraq & Pakistan, while expecting heaven.

@Topic

Another stupid mind, who knows Baitullah Masoud used to send suicide bomber to kill innocent muslims, yet thinking He was more kind. But civilian casualties in this "Rah-e-Nijaat" is also alarming thing for PA, as may be they win the war, but they will loss hearts, and these guys will teach their children about the crimes of PA.

What is WOT?????? ,Many British ministers and NATO cammanders are against this war.

Majority of US senators are pro Israeli and supporting AIPAC and Israel and vice versa , because AIPAC and other Pro Israeli lobbies are supporting them for winning elections, also all major US news channels and banks are controlled by strong pro Israeli lobbies.

What ever is going on in Iraq ,Afghanistan and Pakistan is preplanned and part of big game.

What is big game ???? It self long debate

You are ignoring the very strong criticism he has of the Taliban on their killing of civilians.

His justification of the attack on GHQ is in the context of it being a military target and therefore a legitimate one for the enemy, since this is technically war between the Pakistani State and the Taliban.

Please stick to the topic, which is the Taliban in Pakistan and their massacring of civilians in Pakistan.

The PA is not killing innocent civilians in Afghanistan or Palestine, so your point is irrelevant and off topic.

The disgruntled or unfairly and mistreated men are almost in every Army . Even in the US many in the Army dont agree with ongoing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan . Didnt the psychopath killed many soldiers in US training facility .

What my point is theres no need to promote such sentiments out open in Public . However these things do have some kind of effect on the Top Brass and the policy makers ....!

Why do you think he is disgruntled?

At no point does he appear to suggest that we should not be fighting the Taliban. Read this paragraph of his again:

"I am soldier and appreciate soldierly qualities. Taliban are brave and excellent fighters. I always told my fellow officers and soldiers to fight them like warriors, an old tradition of fighting and same taught by our Prophet (PBUH). Either you should read the article again and again, and if still don't get the real msg, leave reading then as it would be hopeless for you to understand or anyone else make you understand.

Yeah the fundoo does (His username is fundamentalist).

Blame game again :hitwall:

ISAF drone attacks killing innocient civilians is babarian and against war ethices , similarly talaban suicidel attacks on civilians is also considered as against war ethics and barberian.
