Federal cabinet shoots down ‘Sin Tax’ proposal

This is stupid!

The basic msg is money is more important than life!

I mean tobacco and sugar is killing the nation! If you dont act smartly you wont have a nation to fix!
Almost every developed nation taxes alcohol and tobacco heavily! It becomes revenues for health care to help fix the damage done to those who consume it! So the people kind of pay for their future treatment!

The diseases caused by Sugar, such as diabetes for example, costs 100 times more to manage thus putting huge pressure on public health system which is already in a terrible state. The same allies to respiratory disease caused by Tobacco. Hence these need to be made expensive to purchase and the only way to do it to tax it heavily, specially sugary drinks such as coke and pepsi.

A pack of 25-cigarette in Australia is now approximately $30 dollars to buy - this is equal to Rs 3000!

I believe I have already stated something similar :agree:

And here I thought that Naya Pakistan would be different. If what you said is true, it sounds very much the same as Purana Pakistan. :D
You cant fix 70 yrs of BS overnight...Even the prophet took years to get people of Jahilah to behave like human!

.
Looks like government may actually proceed with health tax or sin tax on cigarettes and Cold drinks.
If true i say Alhamdullilah. Its a huge huge huge thing for the health sector of Pakistan as this will go along way in reducing Non Communicable Diseases (NCDs) in Pakistan.

Anything between 2-5% now followed by ultimately 5 to 7 % in a predefined time period, will be a welcome sign as it will increase revenue (which should be dedicated to running federal hospitals across Pakistan, their improvement and meeting expenses of DRA) and in a decade health problems like COPD, Diabetes, Dylipidemia, CVA, MI and heart failure will decrease giving a secondary and indirect boost to health expenses.

May the government stick to its resolve and finally implement this.

.
I hope they follow through. Cigarettes have become so expensive in the UK the younger generation barely smoke.

There are govt stats.

https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopula...lletins/adultsmokinghabitsingreatbritain/2015
  • This report describes smoking data for the UK and its constituent countries from the Annual Population Survey in addition to smoking data for Great Britain from the Opinions and Lifestyle Survey.
  • In 2015, of all adults in the UK 17.2% smoked, down from 20.1% of adults who smoked in 2010.
  • Of the constituent countries, 16.9% of adults currently smoke in England; for Northern Ireland, this figure is 19.0%; Scotland, 19.1%; Wales, 18.1% – in recent years, Scotland and Wales have seen the largest decreases in current smokers.
  • In 2015 across the UK, 19.3% of men and 15.3% of women smoked cigarettes.
  • From 2010 to 2015, smoking has become less common across all ages in the UK, with the largest decrease observed among those aged 18 to 24 years.
  • In Great Britain, average cigarette consumption among smokers has reduced to 11.3 cigarettes each day – the lowest level since 1974.
  • In 2015, of all adults in Great Britain who had previously smoked 56.7% had quit – the highest proportion of quitters since 1974

The same is being done with sweets and fizzy drinks. We are literally drinking poison.

There's Sugar Tax in UK now ... Normal coke is more expensive than Diet Coke.

In developed nations, they let the public get hooked then slap taxes. It's all about money there too. If they were so concerned about reducing the health bill, banning tobacco would be the easiest. 90% taxes on one pack of cigs. Private Health insurance is cheaper on monthly basis than paying £270 tax on 30 packs per month!

Now that people are shifting to vapes, EU slapped nicotine tax because revenue from tobacco started going down rapidly.

And no health risks from vaping have been proven yet.

And no health risks from vaping have been proven yet.

vaping has less side effects profile because
1.. No burning / carbon mono oxide / tar etc
2.. It takes time to ascertain something scientifically tht is irrefutable

Having said that whats given is that e-cigarette and vaporizers carry the nicotine related side effects. They remain the same infact the smaller ones requiring concentrated solutions are more harmful

No clinical trials have proven the harmful effects so far. Can you reference any clinical trials?

In Italy a clinical trial of non-smokers on vapes for one year was carried. No adverse effects on the test subjects found.

I vape and I also mix my own. It's food grade glycerine (v and p), food grade flavour and a tiny amount of nicotine (3mg strength). Ingredients are all safe.

. .
From the Journal of the American Heart Association:

https://www.ahajournals.org/doi/10.1161/JAHA.117.006353

When was this published?

No proper clinical trials on humans referenced anywhere.

Yes there are people who are intolerant to VG, PG and certain types of flavourings but that's with ANY food as well. Allergy notes are found on almost all food items.

Plus the writer classed vaping as smoking :cuckoo: ... "Consequently, e‐cigarettes became the most commonly used smoking products,"

Smoke is caused by burning and fire.

Vape = Vapour (hence no burning)

Plus flavour manufacturers have gotten rid of those ingredients causing issues in early days. It's documented and ingredients used in flavours are listed as well.

I've been vaping for past 3 years after 20 cigs a day for 20yrs. There is a significant difference in everything including stamina, taste buds and far far less attacks of cold/flu to name a few. Nasty cough is a thing of past now.

For a smoker who can't kick the habit, moving to vape is the best thing. Big vape clouds 8-)

.
As i said earlier...
It will take time to come up with irrefutable evidencr against vaping. Having said that the nicotine is still there rather in some cases its increased hence the side effect profile of nicotine remains.
You are feelong better coz there is no tar, no carbon mono oxide and no related chemicals going in to ur lungs. The drcrease in related irritation and inflammation also leads to decrease flue, cough and URTI.
Its like choosing between the 2 evils.. And vaping for now is lesser of the two evils.

Open your eyes to the black face of your leader. An ex Australian diplomat who has served in Islamabad High Commission pointed out to me that Big Tobacco is amongst the close associates of Imran Khan.

taxing tobacco is not that easy when 70% of ur population is addictive towards it

. .
More than 90% is also addicted to not paying taxes. Let's not increase the tax net either. Dumb logic.
try jailing people for not paying tax
try taking them away for throwing filth on roads
try jailing government officials for failing to do there duty
see the magic happening
