ISLAMABAD – Federal Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry has demanded the abolition of the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee ahead of Eid Al Fitr.

In the modern age where technological developments have taken place, there is no need of such department, he argued.

Talking to a private news channel, the minister, under whom the S&T ministry issued lunar calendar last year, said that Eid 20202 will fall on May 24.

He claimed that the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee, which is headed by Mufti Muneeb-ur-Rehman, wanted Eid to fall on May 25 (Monday).

The minister announced to hold a presser to expose the real motives of the committee, which was set up in 1974 under a resolution passed by the National Assembly of Pakistan, and no rules and regulations for the functioning of the committee have been drafted till date.

The committee announces the sight of the new moon, which marks the commencement of new Islamic month.

Every year at the beginning and at the end of the month of Ramzan, the decisions of new moon sighting by Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee is usually criticized for rejecting some witnesses, especially by Mufti Shahabudin Popalzai who separately announce the new moon of Ramazan and Eid in Peshawar.

I have been against popalzai always.
But this hate filled mufti saheb is also no good. Pakistan is taken as a whole identity. Moon sighted anywhere means eid in pakistan.
Instead of criticising popalzai he should himself have gone to peshawar and see the moon there.
Real religious people don't divide but unite people.
I seriously hope on day we have celegy controlled by the government. There is no successful Islamic country where mullahs are let loose. From islamic Saudi Arabia to Shia Iran to gulf to Liberal Central Asian states, to turkey, celergy is managed by the government. With government controlled madrassas and govet run mosques where imam in each mosque appointed by the government and preach government approved lectures.

Never knew that Islamabad is the most air polluted city of Pakistan. Thanks for enlightening everyone!

BTW, its not just one city, reports from other parts of country are also taken into account.

Instead of going through all this drama, it would be better to synchronize with KSA. Muslims all over the world and in the West celebrate Eid with KSA timing.

in u.s and england some people follow saudi method while others celebrate Eid one day later so i think it is better we should let public to decide when they celebrate eid and no need to forcefully impose decision as there is freedom for every person to practice their religious rituals like they want,I never see science and technology minister in any developed country being involved in fighting for when to observe Eid like happening here instead he should focus on real matters as moon sighting has no impact on science and technology development of any nation

Pakistan definitely needs to synchronize the whole Islamic Calendar with Saudi Arabia which is the case with most of the muslim countries around the world. Ramadan, Chhoti Eid and Waddi Eid should all be celebrated according to Saudi Calendar. Almost all muslims living in Germany celebrate Eid on the same day as Saudi Arabia. Just do it and get rid of all this annual fiasco once and for all.

Pakistan Ruhat e Hilal committe makes the correct decision. Fawad is a jahil who hasn't got the clue about the Islamic sharia. When has Mufti MuneebRehman made mistake in Moon sighting.
If some jahil mullah claims he has sighted the moon whilst moon sighting Committe and Astronomy data states that moon visibility is impossible then why should we celebrate Eid or start Ramadhan.

What is so wrong with celebrating it the next day when the moon is visible?
This is all a propaganda by terrorist mullahs. They on purpose try to cause fitna. What if tomorrow somebody claims they sighted the moon on the 27th Ramadan, should the Ruhut e Hilal committe declare Eid after keeping 27 fasts, ofcourse not, their sighting will be invalid according to the sharia law.

According to the Astronomy data which Fawad is boasting about states that moon will not be visible Saturday night so Eid is Monday.

Fawad doesn't know the difference between Birth of the moon and Crescent sighting.

True and in the UK some muslims follow Turkey, some Saudi and majority follow local sighting.
Eid issue is just a self created fitna. It's like I request everybody to start Suhoor timing and Iftar timings at the same time around the world, or even Salah timings. I may think I am uniting the ummah but in reality I am causing a great fitna.

Ramadhan and Eid is celebrated according to the moon, not on the location of a country. The moon location matters, just like we open and break fast by looking at the Sun, and Salah timings depending where the sun is, the same way we follow the moon.

How hard can it be, unless of course the mullahs/business men don't want that lest it dilutes their opiate effect.

Maulvis, Priests, Padres, Rabbis, Monks, Dick-Bell_Ringers etc are in reality business men, it is not in their interest to use common sense but to grow their parish, their followers, their catchment - makes them more money.
