What's new

Farakka Day today

Bangladesh has suffered a lot due to floods in the past. The dams built by india is preventing losses to bangladesh from floods in terms of both life and property. Follow the link to know the truth:

Floods in Bangladesh - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

causes_of_flooding_in_bangladesh.jpg

Bangladesh is one of the world most densely populated country and one of the most susceptible countries to flood disasters. It also has one of the three most powerful rivers passing though it Ganges, Meghna and Brahmaputra. About one half of the land area in Bangladesh is at an elevation of less than 8 meters above sea level. Up to 30% of the country has been covered with flood waters. In 1991 more 200,000 deaths resulted from flooding and associated tropical cyclones.

There are many physical and human causes that allowed the floods to be worse; such as:

The Physical Causes of the Floods:

->Most of the country consists of a huge flood plain and delta.
->Snowmelt from the Himalayas takes place in late spring & summer.
->70% of the total area is less than 1 meter above sea level.
->10% of the land area is made up of Lakes and Rivers.
->Bangladesh experiences heavy monsoon rains, especially over the highlands.
->Tropical storms bring heavy rains and coastal flooding.
->The main cause was the above average & long period of heavy rain which caused all 3 rivers to have their peak flow at the same time.
->In the spring, melting snow from the Himalayas further increases the flood risks as ******** of melt water enter the rivers at their source.

The Human Causes of the Floods:

->Deforestation in Nepal and the Himalayas increases run off and add to deposition and flooding downstream.
->Urbanization of the flood plain has increased magnitude & frequency of floods.
->Global warming is blamed for sea level rise, increased snow melt & increased rainfall in the region.
->Poorly maintained embankments (levees) leak & collapse in times of high discharge.
->Increasing population pressure in Bangladesh itself has resulted in the sinking of many new wells resulting in the lowering of the water table and the subsequent subsidence of land making it even more prone to flooding.

Clearly none of the point above points towards the dams built by india.

BNP's rally against dams built by india is just a politically motivated stunt and nothing else. It is just out of sheer hatered against india. BNP has nothing to contribute to bangladesh's development.

Agreed dams built by india might cause some environment related issues such as increase in the problem of sedimentation in Bangladesh. But that's it. It could have been just one of the reason out of loads of reasons mentioned above and most probably the least important. If india haden't built those dams more than half of bangladesh would have been washed away by floods every year and bangladesh had to survive only on aid, just like pakistan. Their would have been only negative rate of growth.
What say you??

Should india release all the water of river ganga??

@ What an argument yar ??????? That is why all the neighbours hate India from the core of their heart.

Pls take that idea with yourself like your father did and try not to inject it to anyone else. Don't make a mockery out of yourself , what happened happened for good everyone admits it and some of you are stuck in past in purple delusions. Ever thought of paying respect to some countrymen who were not crouching under
the sofa?

Back to topic,
@Dhruv V Singh its a propaganda right? They do produce this nerds in millions I guess.
So sad all those educations end up in this stupids. And before worrying about china why don't you look at your own dung stricken face 'cos you've built one stupid
dam yourself?

My grandfather used to say the same thing. Though many of his family objected, turned out he was right after all. He even said that Mujib didn't even have the qualities of a leader. The only good thing about Mujib was that he was a great speaker.

Although, Pakistan army actions gave birth to events that were inevitable. Bhutto's mistake (along with Yaha Khan) was that he simply walked out of the table during the meeting on agreeing to set up a government with Mujib; since it was Mujib who won the elections. Mujib's cabinet would have fallen in less than six months time - guaranteed.

One should never forget the events and the oppression of the Mujib era and how it ended. Only a complete RETARD would assume that it was all bunnies and rainbows during Mujib's rule.

So much aid money from foreign donors, good people of Bangladesh tried so hard to make life better for them and others, but in all the 40 years, everything just flies out of the window. HDI in Bangladesh is still very low even in light of GDP growth.

Amar Shonar Bangla...feels so hallow whenever singing that. This country is run by wimps and a nation filled with wimps.

Call me paranoid, but I have always been extremely suspicious of India in respect to Bangladesh.

The land was a lot stronger during the Pakistan era - no doubt. India never dared touch or interfere the land.

What has happened has happened, all we need now is a strong and committed leadership. Not those two weak and corrupt women (along with their sons) running the show - a show best described as comical.

Specific to water sharing, we have similar issues with Pakistan(strong country :) ). So I would say farakka would have happened anyway.

. .
Talking about the whole picture ;)

What other things do you think would have been different if Bangladesh was Pakistan? The probability of anyone getting shot while crossing Indo-Pak border in wee hour of morning is higher than that of Indo-BD border.

.
It would be saddening, when you wait to here who gets the best plot, the old man says its due to RAW i dont have any.
Apart from that i feel there is lot of opportunity for bangladesh to trade in water. They get lot of water from 3 major rivers end up in flooding. Pass it on to andhra or orissa and get back water during summer from calcutta.
in our country also we have such fights between karnataka and tamilnadu, with my state kerala a poor observer. THey all want water, but not willing to pay just give it for free. WHere as kerala has huge energy needs. simple solution give us electricity take water.

.
Farakka was forcefully imposed upon Bangladesh. India did not negotiate with our country before it started the construction. People here are talking about water trade. What water trade can we make when we do not have water to spare!

India is unilaterally withdrwing water during winter when we need it most. If water is to be shared, then negotiation must precede other actions. Farakka has poisoned the relationship between the two countries. It has ruined a prospective relationship.

It may be restored once Farakka is decommissioned and India re-negotiate the terms. In fact it is India which is suffering more than my country. India needs transit and connectivities via BD, but it is not getting that. So, why not a re-negotiation on all subjects of mutual interest?

Are not you talking like a child? Indians also used to say after 1947, 'Angrez ka Zamana accha tha. Us waqt har kuch sasta tha.' Are not you putting similar ignorant remarks here? Why do you propagate an united Pakistan indirectly by talking ill about a leader? What he did before 1971 and what he COULD NOT do after 1971 are two different things.

What do you expect from him when nothing could work in a country which was shattered to pieces by your Pakistan army? Are we living in 1970s? Better put your energy and sweat to build our great nation instead of critizing falures of our leaders.

We both need water. I am not sure why transit is more important than water from farakka dam. How would decommissioning help us?

Bangladesh :: Rainfall & Weather
says this
The average annual rainfall varies from a maximum of 5,690 mm in the northeast of the country to minimum of 1,110 mm in the west. The groundwater, however, provides adequate storage to compensate for annual variations in rainfall and stream flow. The average annual discharge from the three major rivers - a total of 35,000 cusec- is second only to the Amazon. The carry billions of tons of sediment load every year.
USA Climate, Temperature, Average Weather History, Rainfall/ Precipitation, Sunshine - THe average in US is 1080mm

Now take a long breath and start blaiming india for all the problems of bangladesh.

Farakka water is used to flush out silts from Hoogly river so that ships can move in Calcutta port without hindrance. Siltation could have been solved by continuous dredging. But, India chose Farakka, instead. This is how it ruined the prospect of a good neighbourly relationship with BD.

Howver, Farakka is not alone, India has built tens of dams just acroos the international border to make our country dry. Tipaimukhi is the latest addition, but it will certainly not be the last.

Tens of dams? Really? What are some of the other dams?

My army? Since when did I sympathize with the actions of the Pakistani army?

I would suppose that you have trouble understanding simple things like:
if, then and else.

It is not propaganda, they are facts, which don't appear to grasp very well.

Walk easy.

----

Mr. eastwatch, I am very critical of Yaha Khan's actions just as Mujib's complete delusional wisdom.

And I never said Bangladesh and Pakistan must reunite. There in fact was such a proposal, but never took off. Too many issues.

And here you are insulting against Hindus? And over what? A freakin damn? My, my, aren't you an expert in debating.

You are saying I spread propaganda? And you say Bangladesh can become a superpower with its current strength in pretty much anything?

Hasina is busy building multi-billion dollar monuments and and airports to commemorate her dead father, and that empowers the poor of Bangladesh? And you say that we can become a super power as we are now?

Oh, and be careful around Hindus in Bangladesh with that tone of yours. They are the largest minority here. Don't blame me for whatever happens to you around them with that tone of yours.

Thanks for the laughs by the way

.
My grand pa also said me so, as like MD. Akmal and Zabanya's fathers.

I can not understand one thing, why they do not believe that India worked behind before 71. Think about Agartala conspiracy. And Mujib in 69. ( Mujib planned separation from Pakistan in 1969: Hasina - Google Search ) . Does believing in conspiracies involved with 71 hurts the sentiments of Bangladeshis any how? If yes, I do not know why is that. If I believe in conspiracy that does not mean I am disrespecting the Bangladeshi fighters against PA in 71. But I hate the conspirators who used the sentiment of fighters who were ready to do anything for their Mother Land.

In BD it is very easy to deceive with people. That is why we elect corrupted leaders. Even we cannot say exactly what was the cause of BDR massacre. Our people are interested in history that begins just from 25 March, 71. May that is just to save their nationalism. I have separated people into two groups: one is who fought for Mother Land, are great people (may be many of them were misinformed). Another group who were involved with India before 71, were conspirators. And the so-called razakers were right ideologically, unless they kill any innocent people.
