Born on 20 November 1936 in Sargodha, Punjab, the three-star general, Hameed Gul (late) was commissioned in the Pakistan Army in October 1956 with the 18th PMA Long Course in the 19th Lancers regiment of the Armoured Corps. Here are some facts about his life that everyone should know:

1. He fought in the 1965 war with India, the 1971 war, and the soviet war in Afghanistan​

2. He attended the Command and Staff College Quetta in 1968-69​

During 1972–1976, Gul directly served under General Muhammad Ziaul-Haq as a battalion commander, and then as Staff Colonel. Gul was promoted to Brigadier in 1978 and steadily rose to be the Martial Law Administrator of Bahawalpur and then the Commander of the 1st Armoured Division, Multan in 1982.

3. He served as the director general of ISI between March 29, 1987 and October 4, 1989​

Gul conducted the Zarb-e-Momin military exercise in November–December 1989, the biggest Pakistani Armed Forces show of muscle since 1971 Indo-Pakistani War.

4. Some Call Him The "Godfather" of Taliban​

Known as the "godfather" of Taliban, he was a controversial figure in Pakistan and Afghanistan for his role in the Afghan war against the Soviets and his support of the Taliban. However, there is no proof of any such statement.

Pushing out Soviet from Afghanistan we would have payed greater price if not....Russians are bully you can see what they do with there neighbor.... They in Afghanistan and India in east Pakistan would have been banged from both side.... Russia would also have invaded Pakistan for its craze for warm waters...

Correct your history, the creations you are talking about were already created before he took over. He spent just 2 years in ISI which also came at the end of the Afghan War. And he did not drag the country into violence, the people he worked with during his days as ISI head, all were and later on fighting the American occupation in Afghanistan.

i don't consider him as a great leader due to certain things

1. He should have accepted the legal Govt (winner of election) of Sheikh mujib ur rehman
2. He destroy the high growth industry of pakistan by nationalising it (through this the grip of feudal lords on the country and on the industry of the country get stronger)
3. He had destroyed education system in Pakistan (by setting up different laws and politicising the educational system)

Hey don't blame me man...he himself claims that he created them. Haven't you heard how often he has claimed under him the Taleban strategy was employed under the soviets and he effectively booted them out . That was the one thing he was proud of and you might make him sad if you suddenly ask me to 'revise history' and say he is not 'father of Taleban'

I can assure you that when Gorbachev began to dismantle the Soviet Union, Afghanistan was not the thing that was eating into his brain. By that time the state was collapsing and all efforts of reform like Perestroika and Glasnost had proved inadequate. The soviets themselves don't talk about the afghan loss as a big loss because by then the problems with the state had become extremely problematic.
