Eyeing jet deal, Saab offers full tech transfer to India

NEW DELHI: Swedish defence giant Saab Group said today it would ensure "full" technology transfer of its Gripen-E fighter jet to India if the company gets the contract to supply a fleet of the single engine combat aircraft to Indian Air Force.

The company also said it will build the world's most modern aerospace facility in India, besides creating a local supplier base of ancillary systems, if it wins the contract for which US defence major Lockheed Martin has emerged as a major contender.

"Saab is committed to full technology transfer to India in connection with Indian procurement of Gripen-E," Saab India Chairman Jan Widerstrom said.

Eyeing the multi-billion dollar contract, Lockheed Martin has offered to set up a production line in India for its F-16 Block 70 fighter jets.

In September, Saab and the Adani Group had announced a collaboration in defence manufacturing entailing billions of dollars of investment and said the joint venture would produce Gripen military jets in India if it wins the single-engine aircraft deal.

The Gripen-E, an advanced version of the Gripen C/D, is a light single-engine multirole fighter aircraft fitted with advanced avionics.

"We will build the world's most modern aerospace facility and ecosystem in India. We will abide by the terms of the Strategic Partnership that would be set by the government for the single engine fighter aircraft programme and will undertake complete transfer of technology to the chosen joint venture partner," Widerstrom said in a statement.

His comments came as government is all set to start the process for procuring the fleet of single-engine fighters.

The fighter jets will have to be produced jointly by a foreign aircraft maker along with an Indian company under the recently launched strategic partnership model which seeks to bring in high-end defence technology to India.

The Saab said it will work with its Indian joint venture partners to ensure that transfer of technology takes place in a manner that it not only ensures transfer of technology but also complete capability.

It said the company sees a green field operation where it will train people in India and in Sweden to be able to design, develop, manufacture and maintain its operations in India.

"There will be a lot of training in Sweden and in India, and industry-academia-government cooperation. In that way we can reach an indigenous capability to maintain, to sustain, to further develop Gripen in India," said the Saab India chief.

He said, "We will not simply move an assembly line. We will build development capability. We will design, produce, support, innovate in India."

If Modi says "I do" on this, then wait how Trump reacts when the F-16 gets rejected.

Trump may veto this deal because there is lot of Yankee input in this Gripen.

This is how India should test Trump, if he is for real or not.

Saab's Offer for Gripen-E With 100% ToT Leaves India Unimpressed

As India prepares to issue $10 billion global tender for fighter jets, Sweden’s Saab has offered 100% ToT of the Gripen-E. However, experts note that 70% of the technology is borrowed and it is unlikely that the proprietors would allow Sweden to transfer those to India.

New Delhi (Sputnik) — A day after America's Lockheed Martin expressed its unwillingness to share its closely guarded technology for F-16 fighter jets with India, Swedish firm Saab has offered complete technology transfer if India awards it the $10 billion contract for the single-engine fighter aircraft — Gripen-E.

"Saab is committed to full technology transfer to India in connection with Indian procurement of the Gripen-E. We will build the world's most modern aerospace facility and ecosystem in India. We will abide by the terms of the Strategic Partnership that will be set by the government for the single-engine fighter aircraft program and will undertake complete transfer of technology to the chosen joint venture partner," Jan Widerstrom, Chairman, Saab India said in a statement.

However, beyond the rhetoric, there is a catch.

"Unfortunately, Saab doesn't own much of the critical technology that goes into the Gripen-E. Saab does not even own up to 30 percent of the aircraft's key technologies including the propulsion system and the ASEA radar. It would be a really big deal if Saab conciliates other original technology developers to transfer technology to India; which seems unlikely," Vijainder K Thakur, former squadron leader of Indian Air Force told Sputnik.

Swedish SAAB Partners With Adani to Produce Hundreds of Fighter Jets for India
Saab chose India's Adani Group, a new entrant in the field of defense aerospace, for collaboration this September with the aim of bagging India's single-engine fighter aircraft contract. In the beginning of this month, both partners hosted a supplier meeting in New Delhi creating an industrial ecosystem to develop and produce the Gripen in India.

"This was done in order to start shaping an ecosystem for the Gripen in India in preparation for the single-engine fighter selection process," Saab explained its reason behind organizing the summit.

Adani is Modi stooge, one more potential scam. This is another angle to this deal.

What is in that Plane that is completely SAAB's own and if not then what is the meaning of TOT?

This looks like the best deal for India.

Rafael tech transfer was a flop and the Americans aren't offering anything great with the F16s.

Your only other option would be to make some kind of a deal with CAC-PAC for the JF17 :sarcastic: or go for bigger twin engines from Russia.

What is in that Plane that is completely SAAB's own and if not then what is the meaning of TOT?

Many of the components are from US, such as the engine. So Saab won't be able to transfer the tech to India as they don't even have that themselves.

This is equivalent to Indians offer full TOT of Brahmos to another country. Except that India cannot transfer any Russian tech.

70 of Gripen is not own by Saab. BTW

no such thing as full tech transfer.

It will be full tech transfer, but only SAAB own components. The US and other none SAAB owned components will not be transferred.

Even then, it would require US approval.

Eventually Modi would accept this deal to enrich his Guju buddy Adani since years, as was the case with other buddy Anil Ambani on Rafale.

India be damned!

Saab offer might be only limited with American hardware. But it’s still best deal compared to rest.
Saab wants to move on and go for fifth gen. poor countries like such waste but we normally don’t buy cheap stuff. It’s going to another long wAit before we cancel the deal.

No point doing a tech transfer.

With all the "lobbying" by the indian government *ahem* , the best that could happen for India to date is the Tejas which is light years away from a F-16E/F

With all that tech transfer, what will India do? Create another expensive stealth fighter that is light years away from the F-35?

Really india should stop sitting on a rollercoaster and get to the ground and mean business.

Even if the rafale is expensive, it is too late now.
Follow up with more rafales like a man to his wife.

Stop grumbling about russia's PAK FA and usa's F-35. Just take the best europe can offer and hope pakistan doesnt get J-31 from china, if not indian air force will be mocked at.

Lets face it, india doesnt have good defense planners

What type of ToT are they talking about? The engine is the main thing that India needs, and that is imported by both from America. The plane is already ready and evolved, it will only be a case of moving the production facility to India. Are they going to train the engineers? If the dealings of all companies who impart training is to be compared, that means charging fees such as $10000 per hour for the services of each engineer from Saab. To top it all off, India is not lacking in development scientists. The failure of LCA Tejas project was due to project mismanagement and poor decision making process throughout the Indian state, and that is something no one teach India.

So the question is, what ToT are they talking about?

IMO, GOI is playing with both Saab and LM, they not gonna buy single engine fighter. They are just testing the waters to see how much they can squeeze, deep down even they know that no one is going to share the critical tech. Best way to get the honest answer is, would you share IP if in similar position? Hell no.

No matter people say, higher echelons in IAF don't trust US and they'll never share the critical tech with India or for that matter anyone else. Yanks are 800 pound gorilla and their defense budget will look after American jobs even if no one else buy their stuff.

Saab is very good in GaN Aesa and arguably even better than yanks, and they'll use the high end consultancy agreement to provide TOT for this and make even more money.

Indians have started buying American Crude Oil, and to me its tell tale sign that they are not going with LM for SE fighter, and use this oil card to keep Yanks happy.
