Nullah Palkhu has inundated Wazirabad. G.T. Rd is said to be underwater for about 20 KM. It must be terrible for people at this hour.

Nullah Daik is also full and threatening Sialkot.

Its still raining in parts of AJK and Hazara.

Meanwhile Chenab continues to devastate villages around its course.

May Allah have mercy upon the people.

I hope that losses are minimized. These floods are indeed quite bad this year.

It's going to get worse man, valley on our side is flooded and it's all going to run downstream into Pakistan. I hope you guys brace yourselves

Deforestation, overpopulation, urbanization, all lead to rapid run off of water. I hope it is not as bad as we fear right now.

My village is in danger of flooding, yet again!

It's in JalalPur Jattan near GUjrat.

Thankfully, the village itself is a bit elevated from the land near the river, like a plateau, so it's safe till now, but all the farms below are inundated.

@orangzaib great idea sir. But the size of the lake will be enormous. I will need to accommodate at least about 1 million acre feet of water. I do believe that right close to the border there must be land available. However there is no fixed flood pattern to work with. Its pretty random..

Close to the border may be a good option and it'll create a defensive barrier too. But then again, these reservoirs (you'll need a few like 5 or 6), can be any where. The main idea is to use the canal system to take out the water from the river to create a gap inside the river or some water-hub so that it can accommodate incoming surge. A few of these with a round and round canal system that pushes water out for irrigation can easily accommodate a few million cusecs. Which is what you guys need.

Another idea is, use the canal system to take the water to where the Desert it. That's where you make these reservoirs and turn the Desert into an agriculture land slowly. Or just use the desert to host these reservoirs and slowly, businesses needing water (animal farms and fisheries) will open up there. Like I said to someone else, there are two dozen ways to do this and avoid floods or minimize the floods by like 90%.

The government is trying to commit to two other projects. Hopefully, they'll pay attention to this also.

Baluchistan government embarked on this idea. They've already built about 100 medium sized reservoirs. And that's tremendous effort.

I am sorry to hear this and watching some of it on the TV. I hope things get better soon.

@Chak Bamu is not there some communication mechanism between India and pakistan to inform about release of water...
There was warning given to Pakistan before the waters started rising and the Pakistani MET Department did release the a note on the water that will also be released from the dams on the Indian side.

Pakistani MET Department shouldn't wait for a warning from India, they can easily forecast the amount of downpour in the catchment areas of these and make an informed decision.

Flood warning issued as water level in rivers rises dangerously, India alerts Pakistan | Pakistan | Dunya News

India also issued alert to Pakistan as it dumped 6 lakh cusecs flood wave in River Chenab which is heading towards Pakistan’s Marala Headworks.

India issued an alert to Pakistan warning of the dangerous floods. All Indian dams on Ravi, Chenab and Satluj have reached their maximum capacity.

These are not easy projects either, given the flat topography over rich agricultural lands. The NIMBY problem will be hugely difficult to resolve too.
how about dredging the rivers. It's not complicated. in summer just dredge dredge. it may not fully solve flood problem. but there will be more water in the river instead of flowing into Arabian ocean. May also replenish water table .

Just strange why we can't divert the extra water to artificial lakes and reservoirs there is so much land in Punjab or worse get the water via canal to Baluchistan

Baluchistan is actually ahead in this game. They've already built around a Hundred small and medium reservoirs. Very surprising but excellent development with long term focus.

The best thing to do is to create a Ring Canal system, which will take the water on a round and round journey and releasing it elsewhere on its way for irrigation, then, eventually hitting the reservoirs in a few places and fill those up before hitting the Indus.
Another great thing would be to End this Canal system in the Desert in a few reservoirs. Turn the desert into agriculture friendly land due to water availability and then the businesses will be built around these reservoirs for farms and all.

These rivers bring in much silt with their waters. Dredging is too costly for that amount. Besides, these rivers are relatively shallow and wide and prone to meandering, and spread their silt over vast areas. In certain ways, they help the fertility of the plains with the flooding.
