Extraction: A disappointment for Bangladeshi fans

Chris Hemsworth as the mercenary Tyler Rake in 'Extraction.'

Actor Chris Hemsworth is a shorthand for 'God of Thunder' to Marvel fans. When he unites with Russo Brothers for the action flick "Extraction," that too set in our very own Dhaka, it becomes a must-watch affair, except it didn't deserve all the fanfare prior to its release (we will get into it shortly).

Hemsworth's character 'Tyler Rake' plays a mercenary in the film. His usual charms and action prowess makes him the only reason to watch this dud actioner, if there's any. The film was partly shot in Dhaka. But with the help of CGI and set building, Tyler hurls through the alleys of Old Dhaka and beyond till his last scene.

Sam Hargrave, the director of the film, is originally a stunt coordinator. He was the body double for Captain America in the Avengers films. Hargrave's first shot at filmmaking is flawed. But his devotion to make "Extraction" a wham bam action flick is passable.

In the opening scene, we see drone shots over Buriganga, with both sides of the river in horizon. Hargrave himself came to Dhaka to shoot those montages. His efforts made Dhaka look like that of a slum, not a megacity. When Tyler Rake speaks in Bangla saying: Proman Dao! (Give me proof), it gives momentary fan service to Bangladeshis, but that alone was not enough to save the sinking ship called "Extraction."

The plot goes something like this: Biggest drug lord in Bangladesh kidnaps the teenage son of the biggest drug lord in India. To rescue his son, the Indian criminal (Pankaj Tripathi) assembles a team to extract his son 'Ovi Mahajan (Rudhraksh Jaiswal). Tyler Rake is brought on board to carry out the mission. But like many rescue films, this one follows a tried and tested trope. Tyler Rake and his friends are played by a third party, making the extraction plan (almost) futile.

Our capital city Dhaka is the backdrop of the film. The plot suggests most of the rescue scenes take place in Old Dhaka, but the film changes geography for the sake of the plot (or plot holes). A bridge called "Sultana Kamal Bridge" over the Buriganga works as a passage between the border of India and Bangladesh. Who would have thought Dhaka is so close to our neighbour India? Now that is some 'Fast and Furious' level logic.

An action film does not require to make sense if the audience finds it watchable. But in Extraction, Tyler Rake is a gun toting violent man, who also cares about Ovi's safety. A dash of heart sure made Tyler Humane. But when he opens fire to kill hundreds of men, who appear to be uniformed as Bangladeshi police and Army, the Bangladeshi inside you might feel dumbfounded. Even offended. Why would Tyler kill members of elite forces when he lost the one thing that made him take this contract: money?

Shooting a Hollywood film in Dhaka can be a deal breaker, considering the population and lack of amenities for a shooting unit. It is understandable why they chose Ahmedabad and Bangkok as the locations to ditto Dhaka. But it was ludicrous to see Bollywood numbers such as 'Ek ladki ko dekha toh aisa laga' blaring off as Tyler pulls off an intense fight scene in Dhaka. Would it hurt to borrow some soundtracks from Dhallywood?

Randeep Hooda, the Indian actor, plays an equally fierce man of action that of Tyler's. Other characters in the film are forgettable. Even the Bangla speaking actors are not particularly enjoyable to watch. Mostly for their accent that sounds anything but Bangladeshi.

In broad strokes, you can watch "Extraction" for a fair share of laughter, not for the movie it was promised to be. David Harbour, the actor who rose to prominence for his role in "Stranger Things," listens to Bangla hip-hop while driving a car. That might be the single most hilarious thing for a Bangladeshi.

Agree with a couple of things you said but not all of it.

Agree that the plot wasn't anything special and they portray the mercenary Tyler as a "hero" despite his killing of 100s of police and army for a druglord's kid. Plus the hindi songs blaring in the Old Dhaka households, that's just inaccurate (along with the Calcacian accents of the goons). If they really cared about what Bangladeshis would receive the movie, they could've at least hired some local actors for the film.

However, let's not pretend that Dhaka is a paradise full of honey and milk and everything nice. Would you have them s…See More

Is this a movie? There is no story. Do our Dhaka look so dirty? Unrealistic story. Army and RAB never gets involved in such stupid things. Bangladesh army RAB or police are not so week that they fail to handle the situation. Don't you think that this story amounts to undermining my beautiful country and our great forces. This is funny. How could the director or others think of bringing in whole of our forces to get that boy. This is humiliation and needs to be addressed. Cultural ministry should come forward and undertake action to take down the movie from netflix server. And funniest of all is that shit of a helicopter flying in from India to Dhaka without being detected by radars.....totally impossible and absurd.

It was not stated in the movie that Sultana Kamal Bridge is the passage between India Bangladesh border. What was actually shown that the bad guys were securing the bridges to keep them conatined.

I know this is just a movie but definitely Bangladeshi society is not like this at all. I am triggered because it’s an international movie. So question might arise that are we this messed up ? No . I have been living in Bangladesh (Dhaka) for 19 years and never have I ever heard any rumours or seen, school boy/girl or unemployed teenagers Carrying gun. They portrait it wrong in this movie.Yes! we are listed as developing countries that is true. Furthermore marvellous movie,
Chris Hemsworth too good man

By adding a couple of item numbers and removing randeep, pankaj and cris, this would easily be a “B” grade bangla movie whose story writers were not paid enough.

Interesting for you to state that given all the filming was done in India and those are Indian neighborhoods. Also, let's get a tally on what is "so many"? How many millions out of a nation of 170million are flocking over to South Asia's Switzerland i.e. India. :-)

Switzerland !!

I am sure Bangladeshis are singing 'Meri Manzil Bata hai kaha', while they are riding on top of cargo trucks on the way to India...

Did any one watch tiger king? Love how netflix is getting in to reality tv.

Another good show too hot to handle...this show remind me of Jersey shore...which i used to watch with friends when i was in school ha ha.

Brilliant fun movie. But only if you are a fan of action movies. Loved to see my school alumni Randeep Hooda get a meaty role in the film. :D
It is also getting decent reviews which is pretty good for an R rated action flick.

Conclusion by Tribune

"The Bangla language and Bangladeshi people, more accurately Dhaka’s residents, were not accurately portrayed in Extraction. Yet it marks the beginning of an era where the stories of the capital of this small nation are being told by the Hollywood infrastructure to the whole world for the very first time on this scale. Events like these are important for Bangladesh and its filmmakers to create the urge in them to craft such stories on a massive scale for the global audience; stories which will be the accurate representations of the rich history, heritage and diversity of our beloved Dhaka".

Well Extraction is just another Hollywood film like so many others with backgrounds in many countries of the world. It is just another story. But, some BD and Indian people as well talking as if this film is demeaning to Bangladesh.

Does a film really can do so? Is Extraction a real life documentary? At least, we should be happy to see Dhaka's presence to the international audience.

Have a look (feel free to explore the underlying sources too):

http://download.gsb.bund.de/BIB/global_flow/

Adding up the eras (just for 1990 - 2010):

1990-1995: 770k
1995-2000: 465k
2000-2005: 440k
2005-2010: 630k

For 20 years thats about 2.3 million at least.

(And not including the latest 10 years, which you can look at the underlying sources for more info/estimates there).

No one is saying India is a switzerland. But its far better than BD overall...and hence the draw for BD illegals....found as far away as Bangalore and Chennai.

Confirmed by BD members here in past:

They used the plateshots for rendering the scenes in Ahmedabad and Mumbai to look a little more like Dhaka.

Well that's because no one really wants to go to Bangladesh for typical kind of visit (unless they are from there, or its purposely off the beaten track kind of curiousity). One look at its main airport (say youtube Vlog of some hapless chap going through it or standing out in front) will tell you why.

My review.

The following ingredients were absent in the movie 'Extractor' which may have disappointed many pro-Mujib/military Bengalis :
1 table spoon of 'Chetona 1971'
1 tea spoon of 'Father of the nation'
2 pinch of " growth story" and
'Honorable Prime minister' to the tastes.

First of all, this not a documentary. However, there are some unmistakable messages in the movie. I enjoyed how a criminal friendly military got used to extrajudicial killings of unarmed civilians in the name of close encounter/crossfire , got punished by professioal opponents. It was still a surprise that those army guys were able to shoot against pro opponents instead of running away ! The dark role of their military is well documented in the international media and human rights publications. They were also lucky that director didn't show some those cruelties.

Otherwise, it was an enjoyable movie which I will watch again. Who knows ? There may be' some real life extraction scene' in Dhaka in the near future !! I know millenial children of Bengali military will hate me for writing this post but this is not their private yeard either. Watch it with a conscience, please.

I just finished watching the movie. It was amazing but Indians definitely used Bangladeshis as they will never show their own forces getting killed like flies even though it actually happens to them in real life e.g. Pulwama :D

True, the main reason why Bangladesh was chosen as the field of action in this movie is because it could not show scores of Indian army, elite forces and police got killed in the process of rescuing an Indian boy. Sensitivity of 1.3 billion viewers were obviously one of the main consideration. It seems like, after appeasing China, Hollywood has turned it's gaze towards India with flattering movies to penetrate one of the biggest market in the world. In that process, used Bangladesh as the host of all the dirty scenes to give India a clean chit.

But man, that whole of Dhaka was shown as slum.

But in that process they have shown whole Mumbai and Ahmadabad as slum. So, ultimately it is the Indian faces which got the rotten tomatoes. World already knows India as a slumdog nation, so whenever they need to focus any other south Asian country in a bad light, they choose India by default.

It was entertaining.

Not happy with how Bangladesh was portrayed but whatever.

Hopefully, there is a sequel.

Ok, I just finished watching this movie. It is worth watching - but it shows Bangladesh through a bad lense. Kids are shown parts of gangs and thrown out of buildings, kids cutting their limbs to appease gangsters, Bangladesh military as a compromised institution where military officers are part of drug mafia, Bangladeshi soldiers being cut like carrots, garbage-filled roads, and whatnot. There is not a single Bangladeshi character that is shown trustworthy or on the good side.

It is a good movie but not if you are from Bangladesh. No offense but it reminded me of Borat and how it tried to present Kazakhstan.

Please it was a representation of Dhaka. The parts they showed as India represented India. Don't deflect to avoid shame. Lol.

@Nilgiri bro trolling is not ALWAYS welcomed! Avoid it,
