Swaraj leaves on a two-nation visit of Egypt, Germany | Zee News

New Delhi: External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Sunday embarked on a two-nation tour of Egypt and Germany which is expected to see new vistas being opened in bilateral ties with particular focus on boosting trade and investment.

Egypt will be first destination of Swaraj's four-day trip.

During her visit to Egyptian capital Cairo, she will call on President of Egypt Abdel Fattah Al Sisi, hold bilateral talks with her counterpart Sameh Hassan Shoukry and meet Nabil ElAraby, Secretary General of the League of Arab States, besides other leaders.

Swaraj, in her first visit to the country as External Affairs Minister, is also scheduled to deliver a public address at the prestigious Diplomatic Club in Cairo to be hosted by the Egyptian Council for Foreign Affairs.

"The Minister's visit to Cairo will provide an opportunity to review the entire gamut of our bilateral and multilateral relations and to exchange views with the Egyptian leadership covering whole range of issues of mutual interest," the External Affairs Ministry said.

Egypt has traditionally been one of India's most important trading partners in the African continent.

Trade between India and Egypt during the last financial year (April 2014 -- March 2015) has been recorded at USD 4.76 billion.

Most importantly, India is the sixth largest trading partner of Egypt -- the second largest export destination.

India's imports from Egypt were worth USD 1.74 billion during 2014-15.

There has been diversification in the export basket of Egyptian products to India.

During her visit to Berlin from August 25-27, Swaraj will hold meetings with German Foreign Minister Frank Walter Steinmeier and a number of other leaders.

Both the countries are expected to review bilateral relationship with a particular focus on enhancing economic engagement.

Its good that India is moving ahead with its aim of building better global relations. Germany is an important business hub for India, I am sure it will help our industrialist to gain more from it.

Both the countries are expected to review bilateral relationship with a particular focus on enhancing economic engagement.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had visited Germany in April during which the two countries had agreed to broaden bilateral economic cooperation.

A joint statement issued at the end of his visit had said the two countries have established a robust roadmap for expanding their multi-faceted and mutually-beneficial ties and to further strengthen strategic partnership.

Germany is India's largest trading partner in the EU and one of the top ten global trading partners.

The overall exchange of goods and services between the two countries was valued at around around 15.96 billion euros last year, a drop of 1.14 billion euros from the level of 16.10 billion euros registered in 2013.

While India's exports to Germany rose marginally to 7.03 billion euros in 2014, its German imports dropped to 8.92 billion euros from 9.19 billion euros in the previous year, according to the Federal Statistical Office.

Germany is the 8th largest foreign investor in India. Its foreign direct investments in India during January- November 2014 was valued at around USD 995.7 million.

More than 1,600 Indo-German collaborations and around 600 Indo-German joint ventures are currently in operation.

No surprise there, last time during Bahrain crisis when Pakistan govt. barred Pakistanis to take up jobs in Bahrain, Bharat wasted no time to send man power in replacement. Now again Bharat is storming the leading nations of Newly formed Islamic block. mods. Of defense pk will hate to know that Saudi Arabia has rejected Indian proposal to replacing Pakistan's retired security advisors with Indian and even offered logistics support. Which Pakistan does not provide.

India, Egypt agree to step up bilateral cooperation | Zee News
Last Updated: Monday, August 24, 2015 - 18:40

Cairo: Seeking to inject new momentum in their ties, India and Egypt on Monday decided to put in place a bilateral framework for enhancing cooperation in key areas of security, counter-terrorism, defence and investments.

Both sides agreed to step up engagement in a range of potential areas while underlining the need to combat terrorism particularly the threat of dreaded terrorist outfit ISIS in an effective manner as visiting External Affairs Minister Swaraj called on Egyptian President Fattah Al-Sisi.

The Indian side suggested that the ISIS should be fought in a "determined and collective manner".

Swaraj later met her Egyptian counterpart Sameh Hassan Shoukry during which both sides reviewed entire gamut of relationship and decided to diversify defence cooperation from training of personnel to defence production.

Secretary East in Ministry of External Affairs Anil Wadhwa, when asked about Swaraj's meeting with the Egyptian President said a bilateral framework of cooperation in all fields, particularly in the fields of security, counter- terrorism, defence and trade and investments are being put in place to step up engagement in these areas.

"The President said, and External Affairs Minister agreed with him, that it is a question of encashing on the goodwill that the people of the two countries have with each other into something concrete on the ground. He said Egypt and India should be working together visibly on issues of common interests to show to the world that we are together on certain issues," Wadhwa said.

Later Swaraj first had an one-on-one meeting with Shoukry before delegation-level talks.

"We discussed the three pillars of cooperation which are political and security pillar, economic and investments and people-to-people contact. We have decided to deepen cooperation in all the areas. There would be a joint commission meeting in January at the level of Foreign Ministers which will be preceded by a foreign office consultation in November," said Wadhwa.

Indian businessmen have invested nearly USD 3 billion in about 50 companies in Egypt and have given employment opportunities to around 35,000 Egyptians.

In the meeting between Swaraj and Shoukry, both sides agreed to expand trade ties, holding that there are huge untapped areas for expanding the ties.

In her meeting with the President, Swaraj renewed the invitation to him from Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the India-Africa summit later this year. She said Egypt has a special place for India.

"They also had a discussion briefly on the Palestinian issue. They also discussed situation in the region and on all these fronts I think our stands are similar. We will support each other at the United Nations as well," said Wadhwa.

Swaraj arrived here yesterday on a two-day visit.

Cairo: Noting that India's economy has rebounded strongly after NDA came to power, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj has invited the diaspora to invest in the country as she listed steps taken by the government to boost trade and make India a global manufacturing hub.

In an address to a select gathering of Indian community, she said a "unique transformation" is taking place in India in both economic and political fronts and that the Narendra Modi government was determined to take the country to "new heights".

Calling the overseas Indian community an "inalienable" part of India's transformation, she appealed them to join hands with Indian government to take forward its developmental agenda.

Swaraj highlighted various initiatives of the government including the 'Make in India' programme to boost manufacturing with the help of world?s best technology.

"Welfare of our citizens outside India, particularly in this region is a top priority of our government. We have been proactively engaging with all the stakeholders to address the concerns of our overseas community," she said.

"They will now be able to return home soon," she said.

Swaraj said the Gulf and the North Africa were crucial for India's energy security and complimented the diaspora community for their contribution in ensuring stronger ties between countries of the region and India.

Talking about the last general election, she said it has given a "huge mandate" to the leadership of Prime Minister Modi and his government is now working tirelessly to fulfil the aspirations of the people.
