I wouldn't worry about Macau and HK to be honest. The citizens of Macau have never demonstrated for democracy and aren't gonna start making trouble in the future either because they are not susceptible to those NGO influence. HK on the other hand has seen democracy movements and at the height of the protests last year which lasted 2-3 months, how many support did those students get? The majority of the citizens slammed the protestors and everything turned normal once again. Beijing doesn't have to break a sweat, the local police, black society, majority of the people handled the situation very well. This proof HK is not an easy target to get everybody brainwashed and start rioting against Mainland. The students failed miserably and are now seen as troublemakers by everybody. Anyway Taiwan, HK and Macau are not the issues. Our primary focus is our rapid development.

The US seems like arming Taiwan against the pirating nations such as Vietnam and the Philippines. Taiwan recently upgraded the Taipingdao with the help of the Mainland and the government has made a strong statement as to "China's" absolute sovereignty over the physical structures in the entire SCS.

This is the same line with the Mainland. So, who must be really concerned about a mightier Taiwan here? The Mainland's military/logistical upper hand is given, there is no lunatics in Taiwan's local government thinking to break away from the one-China model.

The undercurrents are favorable for an eventual unification, the economic, logistical and, partly, political steps to this end are being taken incrementally as we speak.

That's the regular diplomatic procedure. Not a fit. Everything is done in a dignified manner, following international customs/diplomatic etiquette/courtesy.

Geopolitics is never a linear science. And those points are of my own, as a person residing in Greater China, not of the China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
