This last time around was the first time I was in Pakistan when elections took place and I wanted to vote. It turned out that my name wasn't on the electoral roll and I had to go to City Court and meet with a certain individual to have my name added. From experience I knew that getting to and parking at the City Court is a task that requires serious patience and time. Also, individuals at government offices are almost never available the first time...they are out on lunch, didn't come that day, or just plain don't like to be there more than 2 random hours in a day. I found this to be rather unfair because when I moved to Pakistan a few years ago and started a small business here, tax authorities showed up to my office to tell me that they had estimates of how much tax I still owed despite the fact that I had only set up 6 months prior and hadn't made a penny yet. I find it very unfair that the tax authorities are able to find us to collect money, even when we don't really owe it, but somehow they always forget to add our name to the electoral roll when election time comes along. If they know who I am when they need my taxes, how come they don't know who I am when its election time?
In my view, every Pakistani with an NIC should automatically be added to the electoral roll. This would substantially expand the voter base and immediately give us greater democracy than we had the day before......it is literally the shortest short cut we have available to move forward, even if just one step.
I think we can all agree that more people voting is a good thing. What is the best way to get to make the proposal to the government that every Pakistani with an NIC should be on the electoral roll....and how should this sort of thing be pushed if the government isn't taking notice or acting upon this advice?
