EU undermines UK’s tough stance on China by signing trade deal with Beijing

RUSSELS undermined international efforts to put the squeeze on China yesterday by signing a new trade deal with Beijing.

EU states defied the hard line taken by Britain and the US and green lighted a pact which will help them flog more Parmesan and Prosecco.

The agreement will also give Chinese firms new protections on food and drink products they sell in Europe, opening up greater profits for them.

It came as allies including Britain, the US, Canada, and Australia heaped pressure on China by suspending extradition treaties with Hong Kong.

Western nations have also significantly ratcheted up criticism of Beijing over its persecution of Uighur Muslims.

But as others took a stand against Beijing, eurocrats were hailing "the first significant bilateral trade agreement between the EU and China".

Ex Tory leader Iain Duncan Smith said: "It's time for governments in the free world to say to China enough is enough.

"You can't be part of the free market, you can't do business with the free world and then abuse human rights, democracy, the rule of law and the rules based order of free trade."

The deal will initially cover food trademarks for 100 different products on both sides, including Mozzarella and Languedoc wine from Europe.

It will more than double in size to cover a further 175 protected goods from each party after four years.

In a statement the EU Council said: "China is a high-growth potential market for European food and drinks.

"This agreement will therefore benefit European producers and should be a boost to rural areas where these products are made."

The deal now needs to be given the sign off by the EU Parliament which has urged Brussels to take a tougher line towards Beijing.

But many euro MPs are expected to be heavily lobbied by producers in their home countries to give it the green light.

The PM's spokesman says the UK currently has no ongoing trade talks with China.

UK worldwide influence is shrinking badly.
First Brexit, lost major influence within EU, which is the biggest economy in the world.

Second, alienated relationship with China, which is the 3 largest economy in the world. Still remember British China golden era a few years ago, when President Xi and the Queen in the golden carriage.

Third, UK is desperately seeking trade deal with EU, China and US. Now the only option is US, while UK will pay a huge price to enter US market.

UK diplomacy was one of the best, now the worst.

I have to agree that the UK shot itself in the foot by leaving the EU and now the spat with China.

It has left itself mercy to the USA who will of course take advantage.

UK is no longer part of EU. Nevertheless, EU’s decision is a big middle finger to Trump for putting tariffs on EU products.

Usa will now keep pushing uk as it likes. Getting out of EU was the dumbest thing brits ever did.

Plus Trump wont sign free trade with uk unless all the demands are meet. Trump knows its his way or bye bye.

If theres any doubt about who runs the UK's foreign policy just look at the Huawei 5G controversy. Outside some of the commonwealth nations, Britain has virtually no influence and simply toes the American line.

Britain has little to zero leverage over anyone.

pure stupidity of UK
Not so. UK leaving EU was a good move. They don't want middle East/ Syrian immigrants flooding in from South Europe into UK. Turkey has the immigrant card they can play anytime against EU.

this is so laughable & saddening at the same time that I'm ACTUALLY beginning to feel sorry for the u.s. u.k. india & japan...these 4 has-beens of yesteryears are quite literally the only 4 are trying to fight CHINA from their sinking ships scrambling tooth & nail clawing at the light post struggling to hold on to their long lost glory!!! Just sad!

So they gave into their right wing xenophobes and threw the baby out with the bathwater.
