Ethiopia is interested in acquiring 18 Sukhoi Su-30K multirole fighters that have been returned by the Indian Air Force (IAF), deputy general director of Rosoboronexport, Alexander Mikheev, told journalists on 28 June.

“We are in consultation with Ethiopia about a possible sale of these aircraft. We proposed to modernise them in order to improve their tactical and technical characteristics and equip modern air-to-ground missiles,” RIA Novosti quoted him as saying.

Mikheev was referring to the 10 Su-30MK and 8 Su-30K fighters that India received in the 1990s as the initial installments under its Su-30MKI programme. These aircraft do not have the Su-30MKI’s canards, thrust-vectoring engine nozzles, and avionics and were returned in 2003 as the more capable aircraft became available in greater numbers.
