The IDF is establishing a battalion that will provide the Artillery Corps with capabilities to carry out missions that only the IAF was previously able to conduct
The IDF is expanding the operational capabilities of the Artillery Corps by forming a battalion that will specialize in launching low-cost precision missiles into densely populated areas a plan that will modify the IDF's modus operandi.
The establishment of this unit will enable the IDF to conduct precision strikes on terrorist facilities without utilizing fighter jets and warheads weighing hundreds of kilograms. Dependence on the IAF will subsequently decrease, enabling ground forces to exercise fire autonomously.
The rocket, developed and manufactured by IMI, carries a 20 kg warhead, has a range of 30 to 40 km, is precise within 10 meters of its target, and is estimated to cost between 100,000 to 200,000 NIS. Guided by a GPS system, future models will have an extended range and warhead capacity.
The IDF will continue its policy of evacuating targeted buildings and re-evaluating whether targets contain terrorists before launching strikes in their effort to minimize collateral damage.
"With this device, which is sort of a mini-bomb, we can control the extent of the damage," stated a senior artillery officer. "Today, we are totally dependent on the Air Force, as we were in Operation Cast Lead and the Second Lebanon War. We want the ground forces to be autonomous in exercising fire."
