NEW DELHI, AUG 14: Internal politics, forthcoming elections and the future of Bangladesh were the key issues discussed in the meeting Bangladesh’s former President H.M. Ershad had with India’s Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh here today.(The Independent).

The importance of the discussions can be gauged from the fact that the two leaders far exceeded the time officially set aside for the meeting. Ershad and Singh’s meeting was originally scheduled for 20 minutes but the discussions went on for 35 minutes.

Dr Singh had met General Ershad during his Dhaka visit after which he had told the Indian media: “.. we seek to develop our relationship with all sections of public opinion in Bangladesh. We want to reach out to all the people and all the political parties in Bangladesh. It is in that context, that I met Begum Khaleda Zia, as well as General Ershad, and the impression that I get from my talks with both these leaders are that they would like to work with us and the Government of Bangladesh to forge closer cooperation and develop our relationship in diverse fields”

Ershad, who it seems is on a private visit, is also slated to meet President Pranab Mukherjee on August 17.

Politics apart, pending bilateral issues figured in the discussions between Dr Singh and Ershad. The PM it is learnt to have assured Ershad that these will be resolved very soon.

Teesta and the Land Boundary Agreement were specifically discussed and Dr Singh, it is learnt, assured an early resolution on both counts.

According to sources, Dr Singh said that his government will do “whatever possible” to resolve these issues. Without setting a deadline, he assured Ershad that this will be done sooner than later: “As early as possible” is what Dr Singh reportedly said. On the Land Boundary Agreement, Dr Singh apprised Ershad that a Constitutional amendment is necessary before the Agreement can take effect. In this context Dr Singh is believed to have told Ershad that his government does not enjoy the two-thirds majority needed for the amendment to go through. He, however, said that they are trying for an all-party consensus and hoped that it will come about “soon”.

Another issue, which reportedly figured during talks between the two leaders, was the mega Tipaimukh multipurpose hydel project. Dr Singh assured Ershad that India would not do anything which would go against Bangladesh. He is understood to have said that Bangladesh could invest in the power plant. On the river linking projects, Dr Singh is believed to have assured Ershad that the project will not affect international rivers and only rivers within India would be included.

Even though Dr Singh reiterated stated positions on these issues, Ershad’s visit and meeting with top leaders in India assume significance. Bangladesh’s restlessness over India’s non-delivery is well known. Even though India had asked Bangladesh for time to sort out its internal problems, Bangladesh wants quick results from India. It is pressing for an early resolution of outstanding issues and has, in the past, expressed discontent about the tardy progress. As of now, there is not much change in the political climate within India or signs of Opposition thawing and going along with Manmohan Singh Government, which leaves it little option except reiterating stated positions.

Meanwhile, India’s External Affairs Ministry has said that General Ershad’s visit is “part of our ongoing engagement with a democratic and multi-party polity in Bangladesh”. The Prime Minister, it said, had conveyed the high priority that the Government and people of India attach to developing the friendliest of relations with Bangladesh which is an important neighbour of India.

Our Special Correspondent adds: India wants Ershad’s hardline vote bank to stay with Sheikh Hasina to keep Pakistan, Jamaat and BNP alliance cool diplomatically because that is somewhat advantageous for Delhi. And it is essential for India to walk in tandem with a leader like him, said the Anandabazar Patrika on Tuesday on the ruling grand alliance major partner’s visit to New Delhi.

The mass circulation Bangla daily from Kolkata summed up his visit saying the Indian leadership consider it important as they are urging him to play an active role to keep the political situation in Bangladesh stable until the next polls.

Ershad recently rigged up the ‘minus two theory’ saying the two ladies who dominate the country’s politics should be out as they have pushed Bangladesh to the brink.

Manmohan Singh government wants bilateral relations with Dhaka uninterrupted when it consider the relations were proceeding on a positive note after a long time since Hasina government came into power. Hasina government has been given financial assistance to improve infrastructures at a very low interest. Manmohan does not want the course of bilateral relations to falter.

It has conveyed to Ershad that India is sincere to quickly reach an agreement on Teesta. Foreign Secretary Ranjan Mathai has told the former Bangtladesh President that it is necessary to arrive at an internal consensus, the Anandabazar further reported.

NEW DELHI, AUG 14: Internal politics, forthcoming elections and the future of Bangladesh were the key issues discussed in the meeting Bangladesh’s former President H.M. Ershad had with India’s Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh here today.(The Independent).

President Ershad's Jatiyo Party was and remains the second front for India. While on military training in Deradun in 1972/73, this characterless general was intimately observed by the Indian top generals who reported to the India's top political brass that he could be an excellent choice in a power vacume in BD if somehow AL fails.

Then, a time came when he masterminded the killing of independent-minded President Ziaur Rahman in Chittagong and took over the reign of BD at gunpoint after about 10 months from the next elected President Sattar who was concurrently serving as Chairperson of BNP. On the surface, Brigadier Manjur killed the President. But, he knew very well without Dhaka Cantonement (DC) in his control he could not take over the govt. So, why he did the killing?

He was trusting his followers and friends in DC who assured him they would kill or arrest Gen. Ershad in DC once they received the news of killing the President which occurred on 30 May 1980. But, in reality, this was a conspiracy orchestrated by Ershad himself. Manjur received no support from his friends in DC, tried to flee to Myanmar, but, was arrested by the Police and was handed over to the military. Manjur was silenced by bullets immediately after entering the Ctg. Cantonment (CC).

Ershad took over the govt after about ten months, India was happy with this. But, BNP, under Begum Zia kept on staging political movement against him. In the meantime, Ershad thought he can be totally independent of India's influence. He b(r)ought one/two sq. of fighter planes from Pakistan, had the audacity of supporting Kuwait when India was supporting Iraq in the 1st US-Iraq war. He even sent a few thousand troops to a few desert Kingdoms.

These actions displeased India. It decided to teach him a good lesson by ousting him. It asked its crony AL leadership to join the BNP movement to oust Ershad. Two political party against him that Ershad could not cope with. So, he resigned.

Now, he said a few words against the two Begums only to camouflage his true intention. Then he went for an Indian visit. As usual, this time also he will be put by India as a bait against BNP. He is expected to do his usual flipflops, but will finally remain with the Awami League.

Don't say that. India is already the most unsafe place for women and if you add Ershad's pervertism
to that, well the india will cease to exist.

.
Ershad is gone. He is on the way to grave and he got no more vote bank left to save Awami dalal from falling in to gutter.

.
Wet dreams

That man would gain even less votes in the next election than before.

And if Ershad passes away (he's pretty old), so will the JP.

Don't say that. India is already the most unsafe place for women and if you add Ershad's pervertism
to that, well the india will cease to exist.

That explains his relatively good health considering his age

Ershad took over the govt after about ten months, India was happy with this. But, BNP, under Begum Zia kept on staging political movement against him. In the meantime when AL was gaining back trust and was re-organizing itself, Ershad thought he can be totally independent of India's influence. He b(r)ought one/two sq. of fighter planes from Pakistan, he had the audacity of supporting Kuwait when India was supporting Iraq in the 1st US-Iraq war. He even sent a few thousand troops to a few desert Kingdoms.

Ooohhhh...

I see what "they" did there

Ershad remains with the India lover AL. If BNP does not agree to participate in the general election under AL govt, there is every possibility that he will contest the election in a LIMITED number of seats to be arranged by AL and his party. Under this arrangement his party will become the major opposition party in the Parliament. On the contrary, if he refuses to participate in the election, AL will have to accept an interim caretaker govt. So, Jatiyo party remains a crucial factor in the politics of Bangladesh.

Therefore, we should not see everythng bleak about him. Instead of brashing away his inflence as a minor thing, we should keep our eyes open to see what really he does during the coming one year and a half. I guess, he will do a lot of swinging between two major camps and keep on strenghtening his paty's position vis-a-vis both the main parties. Ershad is not yet a dead horse.

Ershad to go it alone in polls
Mon, Aug 20th, 2012 6:06 pm BdST

Dhaka, Aug 20 (bdnews24.com) – A key ally of the ruling Awami League-led grand alliance Hussein Muhammad Ershad says his Jatiya Party will participate in the next national elections independently to what he says judge his popularity in his last election.

"It'll be my last election. We will post candidates separately. I want to see how many votes I have," the former military dictator said while exchanging Eid greetings at his Banani party office, two-days after his return from India.

The Jatiya Party Chairman, who believes Bangladesh has basically two political camps - Awami League and Anti-Awami League - also said he would start organising his party after Eid. "We'll hold meetings in every district."

Ershad made the comment when the two political arch-rivals, the Awami League and the BNP, have locked horns over who would oversee the next national elections.

As the main opposition BNP repeatedly demanded for revival of the caretaker government system, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had said that the opposition could join an interim cabinet to be constituted ahead of the next parliamentary polls.

After his visit to India, Ershad, however, told The Times of India that the caretaker government system was a 'black spot' and 'an insult to elected representatives'.

"Nowhere in the world does this system exist. Those in favour of this system say that the incumbent government cannot be trusted to hold free and fair elections.

"But we are the elected representatives of the people - they voted for us and want to see their constituencies develop through us. I feel this is a contradiction," he told the Indian newspaper commenting on the caretaker government issue.

He also told the TOI that with so many problems, incumbent government was always unpopular in Bangladesh and that "every five years, people want a change, even though the new government might be worse."

Talking to a private television on Eid day, he said, "It's (caretaker system) not an issue to him. It's opposition's issue."

"I'll organise my party (for elections)," he said.

Underline fact here is india blatantly interfering in Bangladesh internal affairs. And that very well justifies for Bangladesh or any other country for interfering in indian internal matter. No matter how Ershad turns up as puppet opposition or as Awami League partner, his association with india will make Awami League and one sided (if that is what happen) even more laughing stock. In last local govt election even in his hometown Rangpur Jatiya Party candidates lost to BNP hand down. At grassroot level Ershad is dead horse but one sided india and Awami League orchestrated election will serve the dead horse better; so long indian can keep Awami League in power.

Ershad is worse than a dead horse. Whether he can win in his own constituency is in doubt. I would say this is a desperate attempt by desperate indians to save BAL and hoping against hope that their awami slaves can add couple of more seats to the 20/30 seats they will get.

How can that be called interfering ? Even BD political leaders meet opposition party leaders in India. Thats normal - to meet and greet as big a political spectrum as possible for friendly relations with all.

Bangladeshi's are just an insecure bunch.

I guess you missed the following part reported by indian daily Anandabazar

now who are insecure bunch? Your head leaders are having meeting with a Bangladesh leader who hardly makes it to first page of local newspaper these days just to counter Jamat BNP. Too afraid of Jamatis?

. .
yeah ! He gets around 20 seats out of 300 seats of parliament from his home town North Bengal. As someone already mentioned in this thread, BNP won recently in his areas, he is too insignificant now a days!!
