Turkey's Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan will on Monday begin an "Arab Spring" tour to Egypt, Tunisia and Libya in a bid to forge stronger ties as relations with Israel are sinking to new lows over a flotilla row.

The visit to Egypt comes amid a state of high alert declared on Saturday in Cairo after protesters stormed the building housing Israel's embassy and clashed with police, prompting a mass evacuation of the ambassador and other staff, a Turkish diplomat said.

Erdogan, a popular leader on the Arab street due to his strong challenge to Israel, will seek closer economic and military ties with the new rulers of Egypt as Turkey is positioning itself as a regional player.

A strong sympathizer of the Palestinian cause, Erdogan in the past embarrassed Egypt with his outspoken condemnation of Israel's treatment toward Palestinians, in contrast to the restraint of now ousted president Hosni Mubarak's regime.

In Cairo, Erdogan will meet with his Egyptian counterpart Essam Sharaf as well as Marshal Tantawi, head of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces.

He will also deliver a speech at the council meeting of the Arab League foreign ministers, according to his official program.

Besides his official talks, Erdogan will meet Egypt's young leaders who spearheaded the country's popular revolt that ousted the 82-year-old strongman.

In February, those young activists who gathered in Cairo's central Tahrir square listened live to Erdogan's calls for Mubarak to step down, as carried by Al-Jazeera television.

Erdogan's visit to Egypt comes at a time its relations with Israel have reached a new low after last-ditch efforts to reconcile between the once-regional allies over last year's deadly flotilla raid on a Gaza-bound Turkish ship failed.

In retaliation for Israel's refusal to apologize for the killing of nine people in the raid, Turkey's Islamist-rooted government announced a set of measures including expelling the Israeli ambassador and suspending all bilateral military agreements.

Erdogan went even further by saying that Turkish ships would appear more frequently in the eastern Mediterranean.

On Thursday, Erdogan expressed his government's will to allow more ships to break the Israeli blockade of Gaza, saying that Turkish warships would escort the country's aid vessels, a move sparking fears of a confrontation with Israel.

He also said he would probably visit the Gaza Strip, entering via neighboring Egypt, but Turkish officials ruled out such a trip for the time being, saying that Ankara did not want to become a problem for the new Egyptian administration.

Observers say the Turkish measures against Israel could boost the country's popularity in the Arab world as Ankara is also a fervent supporter of the Palestinians' drive for statehood at the United Nations later this month.

In a sign of solidarity, Erdogan will continue his tour with a trip to another Arab Spring country, Tunisia, before travelling to Libya the next day.

In Libya, he will confer with Mustafa Abdul Jalil, head of the now-ruling National Transitional Council (NTC) based in the eastern city of Benghazi.

Turkey, the only mainly Muslim member of NATO, gradually took a hard line against the old Libyan regime, after at first criticizing Western air strikes against the forces of Muammar Gaddafi.

In July, Turkey recognized the NTC as Libya's legitimate government.

What he has been doing should act as an eye opener to the entire Muslim World. If a leader is not a ladder for the corrupt and greedy inner circle he can really help the people of his country. If a leader sincerely wants to help his people there are so many ways to do it but if there's lack of sincerity even minor difficulties become insurmountable barriers. Instead of helping the poor incompetent despots sell out the interest of their country and then they claim to be the most successful leaders. Erdogan is a blessing not only for Turkey but the entire Muslim World.

i thought it will be Imran Khan..:P

The incompetent despots (Mubarak, Saleh, Ben Ali, the the Sheikhs of Arabia, Mr. Ten Percent of Pakistan and Sheikh Hasina of Bangladesh) I've just mentioned are all friends of america, britain, israel and india. Why do the so-called world leaders of the 'free world' have such affinity for incompetent, corrupt Muslim leaders?

. . .
It seems Erdogan is not Saladin afterall.

Has time run out for Erdogan? Have patience, in time we'll all see for ourselves what stuff Erdogan is made of.

Mubarak is gone so is ben Ali, so is Saleh -- that leaves Al Brince, Mr. 10% and Hasina - lets face it mr. 10% and Hasina are the outward face of the same enity (clue, they are uniformed) - and then there's Al Brince - and Al Brince has the world over a barrel, so to speak.

BTW, the West is no friend of Iran and Ahmadinejad, what does that do to your little "affinity" rant?

Assalam alaikum

enemies of islam dont' miss a chance to tell us about the hate or differences among muslims but here we have an honest and respectable ordogan takes charge in turky guides her toward development with honor and arab and non arab muslims love him and some went calling him sala eddine. this shows we muslim do not hate each other we r ready to dump our own leaders and go for the right person if in sight. this is why the enemies of islam try very hard to support the most corrupt, stupid rulers of our countries

nobody can become salah eddine but for sure if ordogan helps syrians overthrow their regime ( not necessary by military means ) can be called the greatest hero of our last 200 yeas no doubt.

Yes, Mubarak and Ben Ali are gone but their goons are still hiding in the corridors of power. Besides, uncle sam is not going to stop installing new mubaraks just because Mubarak and Ben Ali have fallen. BTW where did I mention that Ahmedinejad was a friend of the west?
