KOLKATA, Dec. 21 : Taking a tough stance against Pakistan, external affairs minister, Mr Pranab Mukherjee, today said India has provided enough evidence to the neighbouring country regarding use of its land by the terrorists involved in the Mumbai attacks, but no step has been initiated by it to stop such activities.
While addressing an interactive session at Bengal Chamber of Commerce and Industry this morning, Mr Mukherjee, said: Pakistan has been contradicting its statements though we have provided enough evidence including the detailed conversation of the terrorists intercepted by the Indian agencies. Pakistan must cooperate and not contradict us. Mere talks are not enough, they have to act now.
At the same time, he demanded that Pakistan should return Indian fugitives hiding in the country.
Mr Mukherjee said Centre can deal only with legitimate arguments, but all arguments put forward by Pakistan to deny that the terrorists were not from its land, are not really convincing.
The first reaction from Islamabad was that those involved in the Mumbai attacks were non-state actors. Non-state actors do not come from heaven, nor do they operate from another planet, said the minister.
Pointing out that from wherever the terrorists are operating, it is the responsibility of the concerned country to deal with them, Mr Mukherjee, said: We cannot chase the so-called non-state actors in another country, but it is the duty of the concerned country to initiate action against them.
He reiterated that he had never said Pakistan government was involved in the attack, but he used the word some elements in Pakistan while describing the terrorists involved in the attack.
Mr Mukherjee said it has been proved that terrorism is deeply embroiled in the internal politics of Pakistan and the infrastructure of terror remained unchallenged because of logistical supports to anti-Indian terrorists from different power centres of the country.
We have the evidence , including detailed conversation via satellite (phone) that was intercepted by our agencies.
Yesterday, I have heard the recorded conversation between Amir Ajmal Kasab, the lone captured terrorist, and their controller in Pakistan. It can be described as a chilling account. In the conversation, the controller, who guiding the terrorists had asked them to throw grenades (at) the crowd. This proves that they were monitoring Indian television channels. We have many other evidences of this kind, the minister added.
Pakistan must pursue these evidence and take action. Unless their words are followed up by actions, we can not share a good bilateral relationship, he said. However, the minister said it would be wrong to link Islam with terrorism.
Islam is a religion of equality, love and advancement. Terrorism could not be linked to a single religion, he said.
Mr Mukherjee took strong exception to contradictory statements from Pakistan about the presence of Jaish-e-Mohammad chief Maulana Masood Azhar in that country.
