England were dismissed for 184 after winning the toss on the first day of the first Test against Pakistan at Lord's on Thursday.

Veteran opener Alastair Cook, appearing in a record-equalling 153rd consecutive Test appearance, was the only batsman to make a half-century, with a well-made innings of 70.

Mohammad Abbas and the recalled Hasan Ali took four wickets apiece. England, who were 165 for five at tea, lost their last five wickets for just 16 runs in 27 balls after the interval.

Mohammad Amir captured the prize wicket of Alastair Cook after the England opener led a fightback.

At tea England were 165 for five, having slumped to 43 for three before lunch after home captain Joe Root had won the toss and batted.

Cook, in his 153rd consecutive Test, which equalled Australia great Allan Border's all-time record for successive appearances at this level, revived England with a fine 70.

But shortly before tea he was bowled by Amir, a team-mate when Essex won the County Championship last season, as the left-arm quick produced a brilliant delivery that cut away late off the pitch late to clip the top of the opener's off stump.

Cook faced 148 balls, including 14 fours Ben Stokes was unbeaten on 36, having hoisted leg-spinner Shadab Khan for the first six of this match. Jos Buttler, recalled as a specialist number seven, was unbeaten on 13.

Root opted to bat first in the opening match of this two-Test series, despite the overcast conditions and a green-tinged pitch offering the promise of assistance for Pakistan's pacemen.

Both England and Pakistan's have concerns over their batting so it was a particularly bold decision by Root.

It certainly looked a good toss for Pakistan to lose as three members of an England top-order that repeatedly failed during winless winter Test tours of Australia and New Zealand all fell for single-figure scores.

Mohammad Abbas made the breakthrough when he bowled Mark Stoneman (four) with a late swinging delivery to leave England 12 for one in the fourth over.

Root, promoted up the order to number three, also fell for four when he drove at a wide ball from Hasan and edged behind to opposing captain Sarfraz Ahmed.

Cook got into gear with a cover-driven four off Amir, but he could only watch as fellow left-hander Dawid Malan (six) became Hasan's second wicket of the morning, with wicket-keeper Sarfraz again making no mistake with the catch.

At that stage, England were 43 for three.

Just before Malan's dismissal, Faheem Ashraf rapped the pad of Cook, then on 23, with 'umpire's call' going against Pakistan after they reviewed former Australia seam bowler Paul Reiffel's original decision of not out.

England were 72 for three at lunch, with Cook 46 not out and Jonny Bairstow, batting up the order at number five, unbeaten on 10.

Cook, England's all-time leading Test run-scorer, went to fifty with a four to third man off Amir before Bairstow was bowled by Ashraf for 27.

Buttler, having been encouraged to play the attacking game that makes him such a dangerous white-ball batsman, was quickly into his stride with two fours in three balls off Shadab — a whip through midwicket followed by a cover-driven boundary.

Pakistan take the honours as Abbas, Hassan star

Pakistan 50 for 1 trail England 184 (Cook 70, Abbas 4-23, Hasan 4-51) by 134 runs

Pakistan's second-wicket pair of Azhar Ali and Haris Sohail withstood a committed evening onslaught from England's bowlers, to cement their side's dominance of an action-packed first day of the first Test at Lord's.

Rebuilding after the early loss of Imam-u-Haq, who fell lbw to Stuart Broad in the sixth over of the innings, the pair added 50 unbroken runs to build on their bowler's efforts in the first 58.2 overs of the day.

England had one late and golden opportunity to break the burgeoning stand when Haris Sohail, on 16, was turned inside out by a lifter from Mark Wood, but Ben Stokes, leaping eagerly with one hand from third slip, spilled a chance that would surely have nestled in Joe Root's breadbasket at second.

There was time before the close for Dom Bess to turn his arm over for the first time in his Test career, having been handed his cap by fellow Somerset spinner Vic Marks before the start of play. He looked tidy and threatening in his initial foray, but it was emphatically Pakistan’s day.

Azhar´s fifty helps Pakistan make steady progress against England

LONDON: Azhar Ali made exactly 50 as Pakistan´s batsmen consolidated the good work of their bowlers on the second morning of the first Test at Lord´s on Friday.

At lunch, Pakistan were 136 for three in reply to England´s meagre first innings 184 -- a deficit of 48 runs.

Asad Shafiq was 28 not out and Babar Azam eight not out after the tourists lost just two wickets in bowler-friendly conditions after resuming on 50 for one.

On Thursday, Pakistan pacemen Mohammad Abbas and Hasan Ali had taken took four wickets apiece as they maintained a disciplined line and length.

It looked as if Pakistan, rather than their opponents, were more familiar in classic early-season English conditions that England captain Joe Root would have expected to favour his side.

But Pakistan, whose players are effectively banned from the Indian Premier League, had enjoyed arguably the better preparation for this two-match series than some members of the England team. While the likes of Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler were appearing in the lucrative Twenty20 franchise tournament, Pakistan in England playing a trio of warm-up games.

And just prior to this match they played another Test in similarly overcast conditions, beating debutants Ireland by five wickets in Dublin.

Pakistan resumed with Azhar 18 not out and Haris Sohail 21 not out.

The second-wicket duo continued to be watchful in defence and leave the ball when appropriate.

But they did take advantage of loose and over-pitched deliveries.

Azhar drilled Stuart Broad through the covers and forced Ben Stokes off the back foot through point for another well-struck four.

Left-hander Haris, meanwhile, drove England spearhead James Anderson down the ground.

But Mark Wood eventually ended a partnership worth 75 runs.

Having tried to ´rough up´ both batsmen from around the wicket, the fast bowler slipped in a fuller-length delivery that Haris (39), perhaps deceived into expecting another short ball, edged to wicket-keeper Jonny Bairstow.

The experienced Azhar completed a 133-ball fifty but had failed to add to his score when he was lbw to Anderson, England´s all-time leading Test wicket-taker, who had been switched to the Nursery End by Root.

Pakistan ended the session with a flourish as Asad hoisted debutant off-spinner Dominic Bess for a six over midwicket.

Pakistan need 200 runs lead here and bowl out england for 300-350 max. Pakistan can chase 100-150 in 4th innings but anything more and England might win.
