Eight die as Rakhine militants clash with Myanmar army

YANGON, Nov 13 (Reuters): Eight people died and 36 were arrested in clashes between the Myanmar army and what the government believes are Rohingya Muslim militants in northern Rakhine State, state media said on Sunday, in the largest escalation of the month-old conflict yet.

Skirmishes took place throughout Saturday in villages in the north of Rakhine, leaving one officer and one soldier dead. Six bodies of attackers were recovered in the aftermath, while 36 other people believed to be involved were arrested.

About 60 attackers armed with guns, knives and spears ambushed government troops on Saturday morning, the state-owned Global New Light of Myanmar said. The army returned fire, but at one point asked for army choppers to reinforce because its troops were outnumbered, the paper said.

Soldiers have poured into northern Rakhine, close to the border with Bangladesh, since Oct. 9, after an insurgent group of Rohingyas that the government believes has links to Islamists overseas launched coordinated attacks on several border posts.

The military has blocked access to the area for journalists and aid workers. Residents and human rights advocates have accused security forces of summary executions, rapes and setting fire to homes.

The government and the army have rejected the accusations, saying they were conducting the "clearance operation" in the villages in accordance with the rule of law.

The troops at one point were shot at by about 500 men, state media said. Ye Naing, director of the Ministry of Information, contacted by Reuters on Sunday, said the insurgents were hiding among the villagers and not all of the 500 people were militants.

Security forces recovered a weapon and ammunition similar to arms taken away by the attackers on Oct 9, state media reported.

The violence in recent weeks is the most serious to hit Rakhine since hundreds were killed in communal clashes in 2012.

Myanmar's 1.1 million Rohingya Muslims are the majority in northern Rakhine but they are denied citizenship, with many majority Buddhists regarding them as illegal immigrants from neighboring Bangladesh. They face severe travel restrictions.

I am sending no apology for posting the news of Myanmar. I posted it because the GoM falsely claim the Rakhine Muslims are not Arakanese, but Bengali from Bangladesh. This false claim directly involves today's Bangladesh. The Rakhine Muslims are descendants of Muslims from Bengal in 1430. Rakhine is their native country since then.

Arakan was annexed to Burma by the British in 1826 only for administrative ease of that region. Without this British act Arakan would have been a part of east Pakistan and then Bangladesh.

If Rakhine are the majority in that region, they surely deserve a better voice in Arakan.

It is sad to watch things devolve like this and Myanmar Govt. will have a their hands full with insurgency in that state. I hope that their Govt. had handled things more diplomatically. Unfortunately Daw Aung San Suu Kyi has to go by populist views on this in Myanmar which by propaganda favors oppression on Muslim minorities.

Arakanese are a Burmese speaking peoples native to the land. The Arakan kingdom was formally annexed by the Konbaung Empire in the 18th century. If it wasn't for the prior British annexation of Bengal, we Burmese would have pushed into Bengal, conquered and civilised you and possibly freed you from your backward islamic yoke.

Don't feel sad. This is a masterstroke from whoever provoked the kalars to attack. Our objective of a kalar free Yakhine and Chin will soon be realised

No chance dude.. This is not 1970's anymore.
You are watched from inside Burma. Even satellites are pointing towards Rohingya villages for little disturbances. You are doomed. Maugdaw and Buthidaung is cleansed from traitor rakhines. Only non Rakhine minoriities are allowed there.

That's funny. I don't feel doomed. Actually, I feel a little triumphalistic.

Guys stop chest beating like ten year olds. An active insurgency inside Arakan state could be de-stabilizing for both Myanmar and Bangladesh govts. No one wants this.

So - any good guess on who could be provoking (arming) the Rohingya ?

As if bunch of bhudists gutting and burning innocent women and children sounds more civilised. It is better for you to keep Islam out of your discussion otherwise you will regret it.

Where does your superior Myanmar stands Economically, Strategically and Militarily? You are maggots of South asia which have zero significance at worlds stage. Calling Islam backward you people are a disgrace to bhudism yourself..

No. Arakan is destabalised by the presence of Rohingya. Make no mistake, we certainly want this.

We are not part of South Asia. Don't ever forget that.

Myanmar army has our full support in this endeavour. Please wipe these terrorists out and burn and salt the land where they got support from in any way.

When all is said and done I can see the Indian northeastern states hiring Burmese consultants to deal with the bengali-islamic menace.
