Deputy Russian Defense Minister Yuri Borisov said in a statement to the Russian newspaper Izvestiya that the first stage of the tests of the fifth generation Sukhoi 57 has ended successfully and a contract for the supply of 12 fighters will be signed for the Russian Air Force this year. Used in the first pilot flight in December 2017, the test will take 3 to 4 years and start production in 2021-2022

In addition to the future fighter export contracts, he said that in addition to India, the main ally and customer of Russia, the Russian fifth-generation SU-57 fighter will be supplied to a number of partners in the Middle East and North Africa region, as is likely to be requested by countries such as Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and Algeria..

After all the recent Russian purchases by Egypt, we kinda had the feeling that the PAK-FA was in the mix as a possibility, anyway, and Algeria makes the most sense since they operate almost exclusively Russian platforms. The UAE on the other hand with all its interest in the Su-35 makes more sense that they would look into the Su-57 instead. Unfortunately we have to wait another 4 years just to find out if any of this happens.

And that just for the engine to be operational for good.. but you are right about your assessments.. The best is to get the SU-35 for now and wait for the PAK-FA to mature.. Algeria already got a few if I am not wrong.. Egypt TV had announced news about 29 SU-XX.. and the UAE is still negotiating too.. So i give it a max of 8 years to see the Pak-FA in the Mena region.. while the F-35 might come a bit before to the UAE and KSA..there is already a huge gap in time with the F-35.. but patience is a virtue with its own advantages..

As of now it's not fully stealth jet. But China has jumped in and will help Russia convert this into a full stealth fighter jet

Interesting. So PAKFA Project is open for any bidder not string attached head banger like F-35 or Strictly for domestic use J-20.
Su57 is a big deal for russian Arms purchasers in a sense that it might not be able to match F22 or even J20 but it will certainly outmatch the lower tier of 5th gen fighters that most US and Chinese Allies will use i.e F35 and J31. Becasue F22 and J20 are not for sale.

Well, according to our friend @randomradio , the PAK-FA will be the ultimate stealth fighter that will only compete with 6th generation aircraft and will have 6th gen technology. At the same time, the Rafale is also the stealthiest aircraft out there to date, better than the F-35. Some really fascinating stuff on this thread if you have time to read through it.

Slightly incorrect there. Early PAK FA will be a 5+ gen aircraft since it won't be carrying some of the extra stuff that the next variants will carry. But it will be a step up compared to the F-22 and F-35. So a definitive high end PAK FA by 2030-35 will achieve 6th gen status around the same time the Americans may release one of their own.

The Russians have already outlined plans to convert the PAK FA to 6th gen.

"This is actually a splendid plane and it can embrace both fifth-and sixth-generation features. It has huge modernization potential. Importantly, it is the best among the existing versions by its stealth characteristics. It incorporates all the best that is available in modern aviation science both in Russia and in the world," he said.

You can call it a "6th gen-ready" aircraft right now.

Well, thanks for the correction. So has the Indian military released any information as to what India will /potentially be paying for this aircraft? I'm asking so we can figure out if and what the cost would be for Egypt in this scenario, should it end up purchasing this aircraft.

Considering its status (according to you) will be a step up to the current F-22 & F-35, and excluding the cost of the F-22 since it's production has ceased making the valuation of its base price not viable for consideration, we know the F-35A is currently around $100+/- million per unit (start-up cost as well as weapons & spare parts etc. not considered here for the sake of argument,) and the Rafale unit cost is around $180 million per, where will the Su-57 be if it's better than these other 5th gen aircraft?

The IAF version of FGFA will likely not be available for export either, but an export version will also be made at a later date. But from one of our most reliable journalists, we learnt that the IAF version is estimated to cost $225M per jet flyaway.

The current PAK FA is much cheaper at $100M, apparently. The stage 2 PAK FA may be more expensive. But then there's no point using $ for Russian produced jets because their rubble is very weak and volatile right now. So you can expect it to at least cost more. It's too early to say.

Rafale's unit flyaway cost to India is $105M.

Russia will certainly make different versions.. with a specific one for its own air forces.. the other versions might be exported with different options and prices..

When you add weapons, spare parts, training, infrastructure and support.. it can easily reach the $180M per unit..

Algeria has already under lease units of SU35 and SU 34 for the pilot’s training...
The SU 50 is slated for delivery in 2025 or sooner since the Russian Airforce lowered the number ordered...

Are you talking about the Rafale? When you put the weapons, spare parts, infrastructure and support into the costs, it comes up to $222M (today's exchange rate). The training is free for India. We paid extra $1B for a second air base.

The unit flyaway cost of the Rafale is $105M (at the time the contract was signed), including customized parts like the additional EW capability, SATCOM and HMDS.
