Egypt is getting South korean Frigates

There are conflicting reports, I have read the reports you are providing some time ago because I did search it.. but there are other reports saying that Egypt got one Sava Sub, even an Usraeli report in 2009 sail that Egypt procured a SAVA submarine.. So let's leave it at this, since there are no confirmations nor denials of it..

Like we said. Egyptian DM and Navy COS on board a Pohang Class Corvette.

This is nice.. but weren't the navy commander talking about frigates?

Pohang Class Corvette
upload_2017-9-15_17-29-35.jpeg

This Corvette is highly effective as an Offshore Patrol Vessel OVP for surveillance, counterterrorism, smuggling and infiltration missions, thanks to its high intensity of firepower, capable of dealing with a number of fast-approaching boats from different directions. Harpoon anti-ship missiles can be replaced with other types of Light missiles for the best economic and operational feasibility for this type of mission, as well as heavy machine guns or 20mm remote-controlled guns.

Electronic warfare & decoys:

- ULQ-11K ESM/ECM suite

- 2 x Mark 36 SRBOC 6-tubed chaff/flare launcher

- 2 x 15-tube SLQ-261 torpedo acoustic countermeasures

Armament:

8 × Harpoon (2 quadruple launchers) anti-ship missile

6 × 324 mm (12.8 in) Blue Shark torpedo (2 triple tubes)

2 × Otobreda 76 mm (3 in)/62 cal. gun

3 × Otobreda 40 mm (1.6 in)/70 cal. (2 twin) compact CIWS

It will be a good training vessel for new Navy officers and sailors

We mentioned the Pohang class might be a possibility. Post #5

The Pohang Class Corvette might also be included in the transfer, maybe several.

I think we were more concerned with showing how the entire Algerian navy could fit in a single Egyptian Mistral.

So... There will be both frigates and corvettes ?
Also, many people mentioned that Egypt will have 4 FREMM frigates, when was the contract for this deal signed ? I know there is 1 FREMM, with possibility of ordering just one more !!!
Egypt has 11 frigates now, right ??? Counting FREMM (Tahya Misr) and all the other older frigates: 4 Oliver Hazard Perry, 2 Knox-Class, 2 Jianghou2-Class, and 2 Koni-class (I noticed that some resources don't copunt the 2 Koni-Class frigates, and calculate the total of frigates in the Egyptian Navy as 9, did Egypt officially, did Egypt officially drawn them out of service?)

"The Pohang is a class of Patrol Combat Corvette (PCC) of the Republic of Korea Navy (ROKN). A total of 24 ships were built by Korea Shipbuilding Corporation, Hyundai Heavy Industries, Daewoo Shipbuilding and Korea Takoma.

Pohang class has a length of 88.3m, a beam of 10m and a draft of 3m. Displacement of the ship is 1,200t. The Pohang Class corvettes are powered by a combined diesel or gas (CODOG) propulsion system. The system comprises two MTU diesel engines and a LM2500 gas turbine. Theses engines driving two shafts through the gearboxes provide 6,260SHP. The propulsion system provides a maximum speed of 32kt and a range of 4,000nm at a cruise speed of 15kt. The vessel has a maximum speed of 32kt and can complement over 90 crew members.

The Pohang class ships are divided into ASUW (anti-surface warfare) and ASW (anti-submarine warfare) variants according to the weapon systems fitted onboard. The ASUW type includes four ships and ASW type comprises 20 ships.

The ASUW type ships are armed with two MM-38 Exocet anti-ship missiles, while ASW variants are equipped with four Harpoon anti-ship missiles. The first four ships are fitted with an Oto Melara 76mm gun and two Emerson 30mm anti-aircraft guns. ASW type vessels are equipped with two OTO Melara 76mm guns and two Breda 40mm guns. ASW variants are equipped with Mark 32 triple torpedo tubes for Mark 46 torpedoes. These tubes can launch six torpedoes against submarines. The Raytheon SPS-64 surface search radar, Signaal WM 28 fire control radar, Signaal LIOD (Lightweight Optronic Director) and SRN 15 TACAN (Tactical Air Navigation) Sonar are fitted on the ASUW type corvettes. The ASW type ships are equipped with Samsung or Marconi ST-1810 surface search radar, ST-1802 fire control radar, Samsung or Radamec 2400 optronic system and Signaal PHS-32 Hull mounted Sonar."

The Pohang class boats were categorised as Patrol Combat Corvette (PCC). The ship in the pic in @Frogman's post #47 is a early flight (3) ASW-variant as it has twin 40mm OtoBreda rather than twin 30mm Emerlec plus a Thales WM28 radome!

The data given by @The SC appear to be for the follow-on 2,350 ton Ulsan class frigates: no Pohangs are fitted with 3 twin 40mm turrets.

This is really incredible. This military shopping is unprecedented. All the new jets, the new ships, the new subs, the new attack helicopters including the Katrans for the LHD's, the military base, the radars, the SAMs and much more we've never seen a pace like this before, ever. Even the resupplying during the wars there was nothing like what has happened in the last 4 years and especially the last 2.

The frigates are an excellent choice to go with SK made ones. The Incheon class is tremendous and the Gwanggaeto destroyer might as well be a frigate with its behemoth size and caps. Would be nice to see them equipped with the Hyunmoo IIIC cruise missile. Sounds like SK doesn't have tight foreign sales restrictions, we like that. Should be fun to see what those 3 will be in early October. Wow.
Just a quick question.

All the equipment you mentioned will be used against whom?

Just modernising the Egyptian armed forces.. there are a lot of old systems that have not been replaced for ages..

Either one, this is just a gift to be used as a training vessel or at best in combatting illegal immigration, drug trafficking and other small operation near the shores..the real deals are yet to be announced..

Just a quick question.

All the equipment you mentioned will be used against whom?

No particular enemy. There doesn't have to be a clear and present enemy to make one's military strong.

The MENA area is a hot spot to say the least and many competing regional powers. If you're a primary strategic player in the center of that hot bed with a very valuable asset such as the Suez Canal and the Sinai peninsula along with all the offshore oil drilling in the Gulf of Suez and the Red Sea and a hot bed for terrorism to the west in Libya and some serious tension to the south in Sudan, you need to have a very strong military to be prepared to defend all these assets. There's also the largest gas fields in the Mediterranean that belong to Egypt that need adequate naval protection.

Besides, with the exception of the 2 LHD's, the 30+ navy attack helos, the 46 Ka-52 land helos and the 24 Rafales, the rest are part of modernizing older equipment and not necessarily new weapons. Even the Rafales could be considered a replacement to some of the Mirages, particularly the Mirage V more so than the 2K.
