Just for the sake or argument, why would Egypt give Israel gas discounted ? I am sure Egypt gets or used to get something bac in return. I know we all hate Mubarak, his regime, ect. But the guy was not a traitor or an Israeli agent. I am sure Egypt got something back in return.

Because Jamal Mubarak and other thieves were getting Huge bribes from Israel.

Egypt's Suleiman: Israel may consider occupying Sinai

Ex-regime strongman says he fears 'price Egypt will have to pay if Israel decides to reoccupy Sinai.' Calls on political rivals to 'exercise caution, keep peace in region' in light of close relations between Egypt and Hamas

gyptian presidential candidate Omar Suleiman addressed the relations between Egypt and Israel for the first time since he announced his candidacy earlier this month.

In an interview with Egyptian daily al-Youm al-Saba'a, Suleiman analyzed relations between the two neighboring countries in the wake of the Arab Spring and the ongoing terrorist activity originating from the Sinai Peninsula. "I'm fearful of the price Egypt will have to pay if Israel decides to reoccupy Sinai," he said.

He called on the Muslim Brotherhood party, which is considered his political rivals, "to exercise caution in an effort to keep peace in the region."

"I fear that Israel thinks Egypt has become one of its enemies," he said referring to the close relations between Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood and the current situation in Sinai.

"Israel regards the Sinai Peninsula as an unsecure area, and is lead by the notion that Egyptian territory can be used for rocket launching. Therefore, Israel may consider returning to secure borders," he added.

Asked whether he plans to reoccupy Sinai, Suleiman replied: "It's possible that Israel will confront us and use its national security as an excuse to do so. Israelis are experts at presenting such excuses to the world."

He further said that he is fearful of misleading signals that could lead to unwanted confrontations. "If the Israelis reenter Sinai, they won't be quick to leave it again. Egypt could pay a heavy price if such an event occurred," he said.

According to Suleiman, "Egypt should continue tightening its relationship with Hamas but not at the expense of the country's national interests, regional security and peace that will all enable Egypt to further develop internally."

Suleiman, appointed deputy president by Mubarak in his last days in power, entered the presidential race at the last moment, triggering both concern and heavy criticism from reformists who see him as a symbol of Mubarak's rule and a danger to democracy.

Tens of thousands of Egyptians packed into Cairo's Tahrir Square on Friday to protest against Suleiman's run for the presidency. Muslim Brotherhood supporters waved banners depicting the presidential candidate as an agent of Israel.

Meanwhile, the body overseeing Egypt's presidential election recently disqualified 10 candidates from the race, including Suleiman.

According to election rules, disqualified candidates have 48 hours to appeal the decision. The final list of candidates will be announced on April 26.

Suleiman told Egyptian media sources that the commission did not fully disqualify him but had told him that he had not presented the proper number of endorsements. Each candidate needed at least 30,000 endorsements, including at least 1,000 from each of the country's 15 provinces, to join the race.

In response to his "temporary" disqualification, Suleiman pledged to press ahead with his campaign out of respect to his supporters.

He's been barred and will not be elected and Israel be even farther Isolated if it attempts anything on Sinai.

Of course no war but it's time for egypt not to be dependent on the USA they can cut the supply for the Abram tanks and egypt is paralyzed, Mubarak had 30 years and for 30 years noting changed even with the aid from the USA, time to expand the relationship with Russia, China, Iran, Pakistan, India, Brazil.

All of those countries except the bolded one, Egypt should form strong defence relations with.

Democracy works, we has been tried in a lot of places already, and it does work. Egypt is in a transition period, it takes time to build something, especially if you want its built to last. Rome wasn't build in one day. The SCAF will give up power sooner or later, consider it done.

For obvious reasons yes I'm aware, If the USA cuts aid for Egypt there are other countries that we can look to Russia and China for One, I'm in Favor of the USA cutting Aid to Egypt.

If Israel and Egypt relations sour, America Aid to Egypt will dry up.

And that will spell trouble for the Egyptian Economy and Egypt's Military Forces which rely on American Aid for their huge budget.

The US will cut military Aid to Egypt on request of israel, if not now then certainly later, there is no doubt about that.

Egypt should cooperate with China and maybe Russia (not really sure about Russians either, i read they gave israel codes to Syrian S-300's), Pakistan, Brazil, and Iran.

But it depends on Egypt who they want to deal with.

Mubarak had Aid for 30 years yet it did not change anything more then 30 % of Egyptians are illiterate, Corruption is rampant the economy grew but people got poorer, I'm not in favor of aid but trade.

The Muslim Brotherhood is pretty Moderate you should be worried about the Al Nour Salafis funded by the Gulf, it's $1.5 billion not 3, but relaying on the USA for everything is a mistake and will change overtime.

And my greatest fears are, that this could be just a joint SCAF-Israeli joke to tell the Egyptian people to calm down claiming that there could be a war coming. I, as an Egyptian, strongly doubt that SCAF will hand over the power that easily.

You're totally correct. I mean that, while we receive the aid from US, we can still rely on other arm exporters as Russia and even try to produce our own arms. US aid is free aid, so why say no to it? If the US aid at anytime proves to be a pressuring card on Egypt by USA, then we really don't need that aid that much.

For arms, the west isn't really the only arms producer you know. While of course America's weapon technology is the best, that doesn't mean that other equipment is garbage.
As for cutting off the aid, the significant effect will be on the military only with little to no influence on the economy. The aid isn't received in cash, it's mostly received in forms of weapons.
