Egypt cancels natural gas deal with Israel

Finally that freaking deal has been cancelled!
Seriously, estimates say that we lost as much as 100 million dollars daily because we export the gas to Israel for cheap dirt..
agentny17 : Hello, my Egyptian brother. Earlier you said that Mubarak wasn't a client or a traitor. My friend, he's the biggest traitor in history. We really got nothing back from the gas treaty unlike what you think. We were ruled by him for 30 years, 30 years with no wars! Imagine if someone good had ruled as at that time, we could really have become a strong country, at least a strong economy.
Mubarak gave us Egypt a wreckage of a country, if we want to make our economy better we have to follow in the Brazilian route, hard rough economical austerity.
First off, welcome to another Egyptian memeber. It is always good to meet a brother :-)...You can say Mubarak was stupid, corrupt, crazy, ect.. but it doesn't mean he was a traitor. That is just me being rational.

I agree with you. It was not the correct time for Egypt to have hostile relations with Israel in say the 80s/90s. He did the right thing with the peace agreement.

I doubt that. Not this time. Egypt military rulers are in a way better shape than earlier this year or last year. Liberals and Islamists are so divided, which serves the military very well. Even in last fridays protest, it was a cleary how divided the protesters were.

Excuse me, mate, but you're mistaken. It's Anwar Al Sadat who signed the peace agreement with Israel not Mubarak. If you mean continuing to maintain peace with Israel, then yeah I agree with you. We weren't in any need of any more conflicts but he really shouldn't have increased relationships with Israel either. . Exporting gas has nothing to do with the peace agreement, so if Mubarak wasn't a traitor, he wouldn't export gas to Israel for that cheap dirt let alone the fact that Israel kills Palestinians daily and abuses their human rights.
As for hostile relations, we're not looking for any, at least for the time being. But canceling the gas deal had to be done, and it was done on the basis that Israel didn't pay us our money. If the government wants to re-export gas again then they should at least increase the price, Egypt's economy can't afford any more losses.

Which is why democracy is dysfunctional, you have so many people with different ideas and POV's and different agendas and all of them can't focus on one thing therefore the "divide and rule" comes in.

Democracy works, we has been tried in a lot of places already, and it does work. Egypt is in a transition period, it takes time to build something, especially if you want its built to last. Rome wasn't build in one day. The SCAF will give up power sooner or later, consider it done.

I hope no war happens now. We are not ready yet. In the next 10 years we will be able to take on the world but now we should focus on building our countries.
And Israel has no hope of winning the war without resorting to Nuclear weapons. We are not the same as we were 30 years ago or even 10 years ago. Israel knows that its chances of winning any war with Arabs is close to none that is why they resorted to nuclear weapons which is their only edge in the fight.
Your advanced battle Camels do not cause any sleep loss in Israel. Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is a Zionist country, with Zionist leadership and a Zionist king. :)

Something does not seem right. You see:

1) Egyptian revolution, fall of Mubarak.

2) Egypt's increased military presence in Sinai.

3) Israel getting aggressive in Sinai, report of killing 2 egyptian soldiers

4) Israeli ambassador row with Egypt.

5) Israel warning Egypt about extremist al qaeda in Sinai

6) And now this

........

Looks like the relations are souring rapidly. I hope no war happens, Egypt is not yet prepared for it, not yet.

And Egypt must not be dependent one country USA, Turkey, GCC, but time to revisit ties with Russia ,China, Iran, Brazil, India etc etc. Treaty will be altered.

.
good move we were losing milions every year becouse we sell gas less than world price we can export to europe or turkey and i am sure isreal can get gas from their good friends qatar
but i dont hope for war between egypt and isreal

Of course no war but it's time for egypt not to be dependent on the USA they can cut the supply for the Abram tanks and egypt is paralyzed, Mubarak had 30 years and for 30 years noting changed even with the aid from the USA, time to expand the relationship with Russia, China, Iran, Pakistan, India, Brazil.

Egypt's Suleiman: Israel may consider occupying Sinai

Ex-regime strongman says he fears 'price Egypt will have to pay if Israel decides to reoccupy Sinai.' Calls on political rivals to 'exercise caution, keep peace in region' in light of close relations between Egypt and Hamas

gyptian presidential candidate Omar Suleiman addressed the relations between Egypt and Israel for the first time since he announced his candidacy earlier this month.

In an interview with Egyptian daily al-Youm al-Saba'a, Suleiman analyzed relations between the two neighboring countries in the wake of the Arab Spring and the ongoing terrorist activity originating from the Sinai Peninsula. "I'm fearful of the price Egypt will have to pay if Israel decides to reoccupy Sinai," he said.

He called on the Muslim Brotherhood party, which is considered his political rivals, "to exercise caution in an effort to keep peace in the region."

"I fear that Israel thinks Egypt has become one of its enemies," he said referring to the close relations between Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood and the current situation in Sinai.

"Israel regards the Sinai Peninsula as an unsecure area, and is lead by the notion that Egyptian territory can be used for rocket launching. Therefore, Israel may consider returning to secure borders," he added.

Asked whether he plans to reoccupy Sinai, Suleiman replied: "It's possible that Israel will confront us and use its national security as an excuse to do so. Israelis are experts at presenting such excuses to the world."

He further said that he is fearful of misleading signals that could lead to unwanted confrontations. "If the Israelis reenter Sinai, they won't be quick to leave it again. Egypt could pay a heavy price if such an event occurred," he said.

According to Suleiman, "Egypt should continue tightening its relationship with Hamas but not at the expense of the country's national interests, regional security and peace that will all enable Egypt to further develop internally."

Suleiman, appointed deputy president by Mubarak in his last days in power, entered the presidential race at the last moment, triggering both concern and heavy criticism from reformists who see him as a symbol of Mubarak's rule and a danger to democracy.

Tens of thousands of Egyptians packed into Cairo's Tahrir Square on Friday to protest against Suleiman's run for the presidency. Muslim Brotherhood supporters waved banners depicting the presidential candidate as an agent of Israel.

Meanwhile, the body overseeing Egypt's presidential election recently disqualified 10 candidates from the race, including Suleiman.

According to election rules, disqualified candidates have 48 hours to appeal the decision. The final list of candidates will be announced on April 26.

Suleiman told Egyptian media sources that the commission did not fully disqualify him but had told him that he had not presented the proper number of endorsements. Each candidate needed at least 30,000 endorsements, including at least 1,000 from each of the country's 15 provinces, to join the race.

In response to his "temporary" disqualification, Suleiman pledged to press ahead with his campaign out of respect to his supporters.
