Enrollment rate ‘reaches 99pc’

Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid on Wednesday said the enrollment rate at primary and secondary levels in Bangladesh increased to over 99 percent apart from fall in dropout rate. “There’ve been big changes in Bangladesh’s education sector,” he told the ministerial plenary session of Education World Forum 2012 at the Olympia Exhibition and Conference Center in Landon on Wednesday, according to a massage received in Dhaka.
Addressing the session, Nahid explained in details the main goals of education to prepare the new generation with modern education knowledge, science and technology and with high moral values and patriotism so that they can build ‘Digital Bangladesh’.
He said Bangladesh has formulated a new national education policy and implementing it. “ICT education and the use of technology in the activities of education sector developed within a short period.”
Distribution of free textbooks, improvement of teachers’ quality, development of multimedia classroom, helped enhance the quality of education in the country, he said. Unesco director general Irina Bokova and Education specialist Kevin Watkins highly praised Bangladesh’s achievement in its education sector.
Meanwhile, Nahid met British Foreign Minister Rt Hon William Hague, MP.

Wha't left is to ensure the decrease of drop-outs,
subsequent governments from now on should
keep this things in mind.

Yes actually, there should be policies in place to reduce drop-outs...both owing to financial or social reasons.

Dhaka, Feb 20 (bdnews24.com) – A total of 54,918 sixth-grade students have got primary scholarship on the basis results in the primary school certificate examinations held in November last year.

Of them, 21,998 students —11,019 girls and 10,979 boys — got talent-pool scholarships, primary and mass education minister Afsarul Amin told the media at a briefing at his Secretariat office on Monday.

According to Afsarul, 31,708 students —15,842 girls and 15,866 boys — got general scholarships. In addition, 1,212 students (607 girls and 605 boys) have been given 'supplementary' scholarship from other union councils to fulfill the quota, he said.

The minister said each student who got the talent pool would receive a monthly scholarship of Tk 200 and Tk 150 each year. Students who got general and supplementary scholarship will each receive a monthly scholarship of Tk 150 and Tk 150 annually.

Serial numbers of those who won the scholarship are available on the website of the Directorate of Primary Education: Directorate of Primary Education - Home, Ministry of Primary and Mass Education - Home and http://dpe.teletalk.com.bd).

The primary and Ebtedai terminal examinations were held between Nov 23 and 30 at 6,168 centres across the country.

The results, published on Dec 26 last year, had a pass percentage of 97.26 in primary terminal exams, and 91.28 for the Ebtedai exams.

State minister for primary and mass education Mothahar Hossain, primary and mass education secretary A K M Abdul Awal Majumder and director general of the Directorate of Primary Education Shyamal Kanti Ghosh were also present at the media briefing.

Ananda schools enroll 800,000 dropout children

DHAKA: A total of 800,000 dropout children are now continuing education in 23,600 Ananda Schools under the Reaching ‘Out of School Children (ROSC) Project’.

The ROSC project provides second chance education to primary school dropouts and those never enrolled due to poverty.

Some 73 percent of the Ananda School students passed the Grade 5 terminal examinations in 2011.

The Government of Bangladesh is implementing the ROSC project, with support from the World Bank, in 90 upazilas with high poverty and low enrollment rates to improve access, quality and efficiency in primary education for disadvantaged children.

These are the children who had missed out schooling at the right age or had been forced to drop out, mainly because of poverty. More than half of these children are girls.

The project helps these children complete primary education, appear and pass the Grade 5 terminal examinations and move on to secondary education.

The project also attempts to empower disadvantaged rural communities to establish, own and manage their own Ananda Schools with support from the Government and the local education NGOs.

Ananda Schools blends formal education with non-formal mode of provision with support from NGOs, earning Bangladesh international acclaim for its excellence.

In view of the success of ROSC in bringing disadvantaged children back to school, the Government of Bangladesh has requested the World Bank to support the second phase of the project. The follow on project will scale up coverage and include new disadvantaged upazillas in addition to the existing Upazillas where Ananda Schools run.

The Ministry of Primary and Mass Education (MOPME) organized an initial consultation workshop with various stakeholders, formed a project preparation team and initiated preliminary activities for the second phase of ROSC.

Role Models in Science & Engineering Achievement: Fazlur R. Khan — Bangladeshi structural engineer and architect

One of the most influential structural engineers of the 20th Century

You may readily recognize some his most famous works as a structural design engineer: the John Hancock Center building in Chicago; Chicago’s Willis Tower (formerly the Sears Tower); the Hajj Terminal in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia; and King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah. In his short lifetime, Fazlur Khan, perhaps more than any other individual, combined his love for structural engineering, architecture and art to usher in a revolution in skyscraper construction during the second half of the twentieth century, making it possible for people to live and work in “cities in the sky.”

Born in 1929 in Dhaka, Bangladesh (then British India), Fazlur was brought up in the village of Bhandarikandii, Faridpur district near Dhaka. His father Abdur was a well-respected high school mathematics teacher and the author of several seminal textbooks on the subject, and eventually became the Director of Public Instruction in the region of Bengal. After completing his undergraduate courses and degree in engineering, Fazlur came to the U.S. on a Fulbright Scholarship, combined with a Pakistani government scholarship.

Why He’s Important: Fazlur “Faz” Khan stands as one of the foremost structural engineers of the 20th century. His breakthroughs in structural engineering for tall and long-span buildings exerted an unprecedented and lasting influence on the profession, both nationally and internationally. Often referred to as the Einstein of Structural Engineering”, Fazlur is best known for introducing the concept of tubular designs for high-rises – structural methods that used more efficient building materials and design which resulted in tall buildings resisting lateral loads (horizontal forces such as wind forces and seismic forces) more effectively. Most buildings over 40 stories high that have been constructed since the 1960s now use a tube design derived from Fazlur’s structural engineering principles.

Other Achievements: He designed some of the most impressive buildings in America and in other parts of the world. Among them: Chicago’s Willis Tower building (formerly known as the Sears Tower) which at the time it was built in 1973 (standing 1,451-feet and boasting 108 stories of steel) was the tallest building in the world. Today it currently ranks as the tallest building in America, but will soon be eclipsed in height by the new One World Trade building in New York City when this structure officially opens next year, standing 1,776-feet over the Manhattan skyline. Fazlur, who became a naturalized American citizen in 1967, is also responsible for designing notable buildings in Bangladesh, Australia and Saudi Arabia.

Education: After completing undergraduate coursework at the Bengal Engineering College, University of Calcutta, Fazlur proceeded to the University of Dhaka, where he received his Bachelor’s degree in engineering degree in 1950, finishing first in his class. He then came to the U.S. to pursue advanced studies at the University of Illinois, Urbana. In three short years he earned two Master’s degrees – one in structural engineering and another in theoretical and applied mechanics – and later his PhD. in structural engineering.

In His Own Words: Fazlur enjoyed combining a healthy dose of philosophy with his work and how he viewed the world: “Think logically and find the relationships which exist in every system, because it will help you understand nature itself, making living more meaningful and exciting,” he said. He died suddenly of a heart attack at age 52 in 1982 while on a business trip to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. He is buried in Chicago, ILL.
