SBMC to be upgraded as public medical university
Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College would be upgraded as a public medical university from the upcoming academic year.
Dr Abrar Ahmed, principal of SBMC, disclosing this Wednesday, said public medical colleges at Dhaka, Chittagong, Rajshahi, Sylhet and Barisal would be upgraded as public medical universities from the upcoming academic year as per decision of the concerned ministry.
Accordingly, admission procedures for upcoming academic year in internal medicine, general surgery, gynecological surgery, diploma in community health and other courses would start as soon as the necessary documents and directives reach from the ministry, the principal said. Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College started its graduation course in 1968.
Meanwhile, a special unit for treatment of different types of burn injury patients would be opened at Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital soon.
Dr Nazrul Islam, specialist of SBMCH surgery unit, said due to lack of specialised burn unit in the hospital, more than 5,000 burn injury patients admitted in a year into the surgery unit are deprived of special care needed for treating such kind of injuries.
Quoting Dr Samanta Lal Sen, director of burn unit project and a specialist of DMCH burn unit, he said within this year special burn units would be opened in public hospitals at divisional level.
Dr Kamaluddin, assistant director of the hospital, Wednesday said a letter from the health directorate recently reached the SBMC.
In that letter, the SBMCH authority has been asked to open a special burn unit in the hospital as soon as possible.
Following that direction, the authority has decided to open a 20-bed burn unit in the first phase on the first floor of the newly constructed ICU building of the hospital complex, Dr Kamaluddin said.
