What's new

Edit: DAC 13thMay 2015 : M777, C295, Brahmos deals cleared.. 200 Ka226T ordered, Plan for INS Vishal

The deal with Russia was to build 400 Helicopters in India, which means another 200 Mi-17 will be made in India :D

Parrikar has already cleared the deal for 814 155mm/52 calibre mounted guns systems (MGS), at a cost of R15,750 crore :enjoy:

OFB too has an order for 114 upgraded Bofors 155mm/45 Calibre guns :D

Now that is 114 + 814 + 145 = 1,076 GUNS

All this in 1 year of Modi Sarkar.

This is the decision by DAC i.e. the Defence Acquisition Council which consist of the Prime Minister and Defence Minister. :P

It does not get any more Higher than this. This is IT. The Buck Stops here. :D
Yes, but is there a Contract Negotiation phase now?

When is the dotted line signed by GoI ?

Not much Negotiations will be required since this is an Indian Company.

They have already submitted a detailed proposal and the GOI has just accepted their proposal. Negotiations and Deal signing is just a formality. Should happen at the earliest considering the new pace that Parrikar has set in MoD.

I heard that no file stays on Parrikars table fore more than 4 days. :D

for me most surprising was Ka226T

Why ? The agreement to build 400 Russian Helicopters was signed when Putin had come to India.

This was just a follow up of that agreement.

The best part about this Helicopter is that the Compartment behind the Pilot can be replaced with any other box e.g. one having medical beds for emergency evacuation, or without a compartment for carrying a GUN :D

Its more like these were the best deals available to us at the moment. Diplomacy is when you make these deals available and possible.

The new strike force for the north required a reliable light weight 155mm gun. M-777 has no competition..

Ka-226 is a Two Engine Light Heli which is REALLY CHEAP at 2.5 million$ per Heli. Best is that since its twin engine, its very safe too.

C-295 was the only deal available to India since they were the only one who participated in the Tender.

Why do you want this little prop jobber to take (away) the glory of our AWACS INDIA project. DRDO AEW&CS is for cheapos so 270 deg coverage is acceptable. EMB-145 is more capable - fly higher, fly faster (almost 2x), also being a commercial convert, its fuel efficient. And whats with the naval use? If you are thinking INS Vishal as ^^, then pls don't. Modifying (twin tails, catapult TO, arrested landing, hard landing etc.) and certification will cost a bomb and take yeaaaaars.
Its an option and possibility. My question was academic and i'm not saying such a thought would've crossed minds of policy makers. Besides (as you mention) Embraer might be looking for a JV in India for EMB 145i package. But if the model has a capability, why not discuss it.
As for naval use, if US agrees for E2D, that would be better option as the plane and radar itself are matured and certified products.

4 hours.. The entire ministry responds within 4 days. Talk about speed.

Parrikar was on roll yesterday it seems. Meeting must have been very long. Good news for Armed forces.

It is a fact, the new DM has said DACs will be held monthly now.

+ @PARIKRAMA what about the news that the ICG wanted to lump together its requirements for a medium range MSA with this deal? Doesn't seem to have happened.

Although with a production line in India it shouldn't be much of a hassle for the ICG and the CAPFs to place their own orders for the C-295 at a later date.
If the forces and the govt act smart, this can be a real steal. The IAF's An-32s will need to be replaced in the near future, and the C-295 outclasses them in every parameter. There are 105 An-32s in active service. The C-295 can be a good replacement for both Avros and An-32s, which will bring more commonality, and lower procurement costs. (And much lower operational and fuel costs.)

IMO, the entire fixed wing light transport class of aircrafts in all the military and paramilitary forces should be borne by these C-295s. Only the medium weight transports seem to be stuck in limbo, with the MRTA or MTA or whatever is envisioned. If that doesn't come to fruition, a similar make in India deal for C-130J-30 (non spec force version) should be thought about.

The government is likely to pave the way for six new BrahMos supersonic cruise missile systems for the Indian Navy worth about Rs 2,700 crore besides taking a call on Army's proposal for acquiring BAE's M777 Ultra-Light Howitzers, in the Defence Acquisition Council meeting tomorrow. Defence sources said the issue of the USD 2.5 billion Avro replacement program is also likely to be discussed.

Besides the Avro, the big ticket proposal for tomorrow is six new BrahMos systems with 89 supersonic missiles.

The cost of the project will be around Rs 2,700 crore, sources told PTI.

Another important proposal to be discussed is BAE Systems' offer to build a howitzer factory in India to close a deal valued at nearly USD 800 million. It was first considered by the UPA regime but underwent a quiet burial due to differences over price and offset commitments.

However, keen to sell its guns to India, the American company has offered to be part of the 'Make in India' initiative, sources said, adding that the firm is ready to set up an assembly line here with a local partner to make the guns domestically.

The sources said it would be a government to government deal between US and India. The Army, which is in desperate need of new artillery guns, is keen that Foreign Military Sales (FMS) option be revived for BAE's guns and that a fresh Letter of Offer and Acceptance be floated to US.

Another key proposal that would come under discussion is the lone bid of Airbus-TATA consortium to replace IAF's ageing fleet of 56 Avro aircraft with C-295 transport carriers. A final decision was anticipated in November last year but Parrikar had then sought more information about the necessity of the aircraft and the bidding process.

Under the current defence procurement policy, single-vendor situation is not entertained unless cleared by the DAC.
