NEW DELHI: European aerospace giant EADS and India's Tata Group announced on Saturday they will jointly bid for a one-billion dollar deal to supply tactical communication systems to the Indian Army.

The army will invite tenders later this year, Indian officials said on the sidelines of an arms fair in New Delhi.

"The teaming arrangement with EADS would ensure that the solution proposed is cutting edge, best-in-class and meets all the requirements of the Indian Army," said Tata Group chairman Ratan Tata.

The announcement came a day after US helicopter maker Sikorsky and Tata said they were teaming up in a joint helicopter manufacturing project in India.

And earlier this week, Boeing and Tata announced an agreement to set up collaboration to handle an initial 500 million dollars of defence-related aerospace component work in the country.

The Mumbai-based conglomerate will also supply parts for Boeing's delay-hit Dreamliner programme as part of an agreement between the two sides unveiled on February 6.

India, which has bought defence hardware worth 25 billion dollars since 1999, is expected to spend another 30 billion dollars by 2012 for the ongoing modernisation of its million-plus military.

India's private sector, especially the large prestigious groups must get involved in the defence dector. They will be much more dynamic than the public sector companies that have a monopoly now.

Good to see the likes of Tatas and L&T getting involved and getting decent sized deals.

Rightly said, the acceleration that we require to attain a reasonable self reliance can only be achieved by involving our private sector gaints. This will also help us in generating revenue by defence exports.

We all know what our private sector is capable of. Once the private sectory is matured in producing defence related equipment, we can think of acclerating defence production to match that of china.

The whole defence procuremnt process needs to be cleaned up. There are strong vested interests that want the imports to continue and do not want any domestic capability to build up.

Even some of the services seem to demand perfection from the domestic suppliers for even their first offerings and settle for less than perfect when it is imported. There has to be a strong incentive in place for domestic suppliers.

But lets see how far the defence ministry babus and politicians allow this to happen. They are the problem and keeping India back in this critical domain.

Tata has started at least in my knowledge 5 different ventures in military industry that is really encouraging. Not only Tata, companies like L&T, Mahindra and few other are collaborating with foreign companies.

This is can be consider as start of totally different era of private partnership in Military and aviation industry.

This is only ONE step in the right direction. We have some very capable private sector companies, like Infosys, Reliance, and the Birla group. These companies should also be given a chance to enter the defence market and compete with Tata and the public sector. then only will our indegenous defence industry grow.

i also think DRDO should be privatised.

Defense research are very fragile dear, secrets have to be maintained, you cannot privatise them, even if you privatise it, it could come under the home ministry or prime ministers control, but that again means a govt enterprise, not possible....

See buddy, If we could have become like that, then India would be another america... we have our own laws, we have our own potential standards, govt can only subsidise the price.....
