Dubai council: reduce dependence on Iran, India

While you enjoy your poverty and misery, UAE economy is thriving, 80% of of work force in the arms industry in UAE are Emarati nationals. It's economy doesn't depend on only trade but also on natural resources, tourism, industry, real estate, services like owning and managing world biggest sea ports ans air ports, as well as renewal energy. Indians just provide cheap work force.

It is not talking about reducing dependence of Dubai on immigrants but trade.Dubai's economy similar to that of Singapore or Mauritius depend on the transactions done by postal companies based in Dubai and Transshipment. The Production part consist of minuscule.Dubai, since it stopped producing oil has always survived on arbitrage gained from business done by Indian,Iranian and Saudi's. A country does not survive by manufacturing some UAV's.What is being advocated in this article means that Dubai should give up it's primary source of Income.

Real estate development and tourism are externalities .Real estate is developed by disposable Income that Dubai has due to trade. What could happen to real estate sector in case there is a slack in free money and credit was well demonstrated in Dubai real estate crisis.

The cocky attitude works only if your customers are dependent on you.A country that provides just a post box to major trading nations and reap the arbitrage in the process due to political complications could not afford to think likewise.

.
What! American and Canadian universities filled with arab profs from Jordan, Egypt and Libya. Tell me about indians and their occupation of 7-Eleven:lol:

This is the most BS I have ever heard... if you would of said in GCC, then yes it would have been true...
Edit: yes there are Arab prof to teach Arabic in universities...

You can't separate Dubai from UAE as a whole, the seven emirates complement eachothers, and it doesn't depend on one sector, it's like you were talking that Dubai is at the mercy of India and Iran and that's just ridiculous., however:

the Emirate has become a major venue for a number of growing, profitable industries and activities:

• Meetings, conferences, exhibitions
• Tourism
• Corporate regional headquarters
• Regional transport, distribution and logistics center
• Banking, finance and insurance
• Business and industrial consulting
• Information and Communications Technology
• Light and medium manufacturing

You have just made the same argument that i was making.

Six of the eight things you have mentioned are dependent on external trade. You stop trade for reducing dependence and they too evaporates.

So, what was your point?, all countries depend on trade which is part and parcel of economy development, so it's not only Dubai. No economy can flourish without trade.

The article advocated r that Dubai should reduce dependence on India and Iran which in every practicle sense are a source of free money {for which Dubai does not have to make any investment or produce anything}.(probably was written by some religious fundamentalist rather than economist)

When that was pointed out you jumped in with your time tested rant on "poor Indian immigrants" which had nothing to do with the original article and also pointed out that Dubai does manufacture some UAV's.

The point was lost somewhere in the midst.

But UAE including Dubai trade with Iran was cut off three years ago. I know that Indians and Iranians contributed in Dubai economy but there are many others who did so, there are more than 200 nationalities in UAE.

well you are correct in your particular assertion but again this article is not talking about people living in dubai and contribution to dubai economy. It was talking about trade and Indians and Indian companies who benefit dubai by using it as base on transaction don't stay in dubai.

In this situation only India,Saudi arabia and Probably Iran are valid as only they have the volume of trade which benefits dubai.

Easy way? why don't you guys show them the hard way of getting money?

I don't really have to do anything.

There is already a growing realization in the UAE that oil will not last forever and they need rapid diversification in order to support their lavish lifestyles. They will have to work just like anyone else and no longer depend on government handouts.

Actually, Dubai has no oil, all it's economy depend on no-oil sectors, and UAE economy is moving fast in reducing it's dependence on oil. So, you don't need to worry at all.

Huh ?
Dubai runs on tourism and trade/commerce which is heavily reliant on UAE's oil wealth and foreign workforce.
Had it not been for support from Abu Dhabi, Dubai's economic boom would have been bust (remember the property bubble ??).

I've been in the UAE for over 20 years and know the situation first-hand.

What Dubai actually does is re-exporting of goods to other countries, especially Iran.It means when Iran for example, starts importing goods directly to its harbors and its relations with other countries and west improved, Dubai will lose billions of revenues. That's indeed a 'super successful' and reliable economy.:undecided:

That is the role that we think that Gwadar will take and this is what the other nations in the Arabian gulf are afraid of.

Now the ships coming in from the Suez canal will not have to go around Yemen and Oman, cross the Strait of Hormuz and dock at Dubai and then offload, they will simply go to Gwadar and offload, reduction in distance and in time.

The second hand automobile traders in Pak are also very happy for their business, as Gwadar will reduce their transportation cost and time of delivery of the cars from Japan to Pakistan.

I don't know any gulf by the name you mentioned, but if you mean Persian gulf, It should be reminded that taking the place of Dubai by Gwadar is not that easy, besides even if it can replace Dubai, Chabahar can do it too, adding that to Iran's much better access to Europe, central Asia,Near East and Caucasus, not to forget the Caspian sea.The only problem facing Iran is political one, which can be resolved any minute.I mean if Iran's relations with west and U.S improves, things will change in whole ME, this is only one of them.If the re-exporting of good only to Iran, stops for Dubai, they will lose billions of dollars of money and it can happen any moment. That's indeed an unreliable source of income, more like a bubble that can burst any minute.
