Drone strike on Pakistani soil detrimental to relations with US: Army chief

Army Chief General Raheel Sharif on Wednesday warned the recent US drone strike targeting late Taliban leader Mullah Akhtar Mansour is detrimental to bilateral relations between the two countries.

The army chief’s reaction came during a meeting with the Ambassador of US David Hale at the General Headquarters in Rawalpindi, a statement issued by Inter Services Public relations (ISPR) said.

The statement said the situation arising after the US drone strike in Baluchistan on May 22 came under discussion.

While expressing serious concerns over the drone strike, COAS said such acts of sovereignty violations are detrimental to relations between both countries and are counter-productive for ongoing peace process for regional stability.

“Pakistan’s efforts, successes and sacrifices in fight against terrorism have been unparalleled,” General Raheel added.

President Barack Obama on Monday confirmed Taliban chief Mullah Akhtar Mansour was killed in a US air strike, hailing his death as an “important milestone” in efforts to bring peace to Afghanistan.

Saturday’s bombing raid, the first known American assault on a top Afghan Taliban leader on Pakistani soil, marked a major blow to the militant movement, which saw a new resurgence under Mansour.

Soon after Obama’s statement, Pakistan summoned the US ambassador to express concern over the drone strike inside its territory, which reportedly killed Afghan Taliban chief Mullah Akhtar Mansoor.

Ambassador David Hale was called in by the Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Tariq Fatemi wherein the latter pointed out that the drone strike was a violation of Pakistan’s sovereignty, according to a Foreign Office statement.

The attack is also a breach of the United Nation’s Charter that guarantees the inviolability of the territorial integrity of its member states, he added.

Fatemi emphasised such actions could adversely impact the ongoing efforts by the Quadrilateral Coordination Group (QCG) for facilitating peace talks between the Afghan government and Taliban.

I think Raheel and his team have done a fantastic job to move the country in right path but there is only as much they can do. In my humble opinion, the limitation come from the prevalent liberal and leftist mind set in the higher ranks of armed forces, which in turn keep the threat perception very limited and tunnel vision. Next logical step would be that when he retires, the incoming team should only comprise of ultra right winged hardcore nationalist who can do the ruthless accountability both home and and on foreign lands.

The question arises what was he doing in Pakistan? Secondly why was he not captured or taken into custody by our forces why do we have to rely on US for taking terrorist on our soil. And now instead of being ashamed of ourselves we are shamelessly defending it. If you say one terrorist down than it should have been us. Another country attacking us on our soil and killing a terrorist is utter shameless and pathetic now matter from which angle you see it.

PS if the strike has happened with out consent that we should come clean about it and let everyone know that it was us and not the other way round. You cant have it both ways.

Every time a wanted man is taken out in Pakistan, questions are bound to be raised and if we help that man being taken out than its within our rights to let everyone know that it was because of Pakistan and not what the contrary belief is. We should had been clear about the Osama fiasco but that utterly disgraced us and not matter of understanding between ISI army and the Pentagon can change that fact as evident with mood in Congress and every US candidate hedging their bets on taking Pakistan to cleaners with full support of their public because we are made to be the bad guys and we are happy to play the role of the villain even when we are not.

First come first, say goodbye to $.
Second, say goodbye to corruption, short cuts and hud-harami. Be sincere to our contry.
Third, are all willing to withstand carpet bombing, like Vietnamese, Iraqis and Afghans.

I am not gonna to say much on this issue because history says something" example : osama bin laden"
may be US don't trust on PAK army and govt so that they do not want to inform before doing this kind of adventure. Also they don't fear to cross Pakistan border. means there should be some kind of mutual understanding between US and PAK for cross border mission.

But I strongly believe that US should not have rights to attack in PAkistan. If any mission than Pakistan should be infrom prior the mission and may also involved in mission.

This thing has definitely made Raheel Shrief look weak. There will be more drone hits, what's he gonna do then? Issue more statements and warnings? People will loose more respect for him.

He should start packing up and get ready to leave. He's served the nation well. Hopefully, the military can realize that it's better to leave the foreign affairs to the civilians.
