Guys a question that's always also baffled me is, that on the sub-continent India and Pakistan one cannot drink tap water i.e. needs use water filters etc... I know this for a fact in India and heard that its the same in Pakistan through my Pakistani friends, as the tap water isn't clean enough to be drunk straight away without additional processing.

That basically meant for me at least that eating nothing fresh in the streets or road side restaurants. I even brushed by teeth with bottled/mineral water. After a while i was accustomed to it however had a rude reality check.

The question that I have is that why is this water that comes from the taps not processed properly. It is filtered or treated however not well enough so one cannot drink straight away without extra/additional processing at home. Why don't authorities do something about this or invest in the proper technology as this in the long run solves many basic problems that people face.. Even in Indonesia at least Jakarta the tap water is treated properly.

My question why isn't there proper water treatment facilities on the sub-continent at least in the big cities??? Could be a start is solving basic health issues for many people?

Water that comes from taps is potable water, which means it is fit for human consumption(it is treated and filtered).Even packaged drinking water is not safe from contamination, and there was a report which established that packaged drinking water is sometimes more contaminated than tap water.Companies who sell water filters, obviously need to create a need, where there is none.Hence this kind of fear psychosis has been built in.Same goes for packaged drinking water manufacturers.

Well to be honest I have quite a few times taken ill after eating non-cooked food items in India such as Salads etc...or even fruit or any cooked item served with some sauce (chutney) this is when I first went there. If you look at any travel guides its explicitly mentioned to avoid drinking water from the taps.....and I agree that after some time one builds so sort of immunity ( I haven't) however the filtration process in my opinion is not adequate.

Raw salads will cause such problems.Since you are a foreigner, your immune system has not dealt with all the bacteria and stuff that Indians are used to_Our stomachs can take all that. You cannot.Additionally the chilli in our food would upset your stomach.Building your immunity is the best bet in the long run.Avoid eating in unhygienic places, while in India, and avoid anything raw. This rule is cardinal.Tap water may not be the actual culprit at all.But just so you can partake your bottled water with peace of mind, this warning is a fair one.

on lighter note ----
take some pegs of whiskey with tap water all gems will die naturally & then you wont need any filtration .

The problem is not water , most of the pipe that carry the water are rusted

Due to rust and decay of these clean water

We have clean water reservoirs we get water from glashiers when it goes thru , these contaminated piles the water becomes bad

This results in problems for population

Normally governments update the infrastructure with repairs and upgrades that seem to not happen

In Pakistan , can't speak much for India but in Pakistan our public is still using the Train lines built by British in 1800 for carrying goods and economy.

We have not even bothered to move to electric fast moving trains or investing much in alternative options , these trains routinely collide due to ineffective management system to control these trains

Back to water issue - also the river water gets contaminations by humans that is an issue as well. Luckily we had not had issue where chemicals been dumped in rivers.

But we have not built any dams and we do not have artifically created temporary storage locations in Pakistan to store excess water ......

Last few months we had record supply of water but it was all lost due to not having dams - if we had dams we would have enough water to last our agricultul for 10 years

So we have issues mainly biggest is we are ruled by ppl with no formal education and social service background most are politicians ellected by fake degrees

If all the underground pipes are replaced 95% of our water related illnesses will go away

The filtration system , etc is a buffer , a final buffer which attemps to clean the contaminations once its recieved from tap water but the real solution is replacement of all the pipes that run in our underground level at city by city level -

I learned these by seeing story on USA's own sewage and water supply documentry
they explained how they build these channels in their Industrial great years of late 1800-early 1900 and since then for almost 100 years they also have been using same stuff which is decaying now after 100 years.

So we are not different also we have some new areas with new pipes but our main supply channels are all rusted decayed and open to contaminats etc
