A city in eastern Germany has declared a "Nazi emergency", saying it has a serious problem with the far-right.

Dresden, the capital of Saxony, has long been viewed as a bastion of the far-right and is the birthplace of the anti-Islam Pegida movement.

Councillors in the city - a contender for the 2025 European Capital of Culture - have now approved a resolution saying more needs to be done to tackle the issue.

But opponents say it goes too far.

What is a 'Nazi emergency'?
"'Nazinotstand' means - similar to the climate emergency - that we have a serious problem. The open democratic society is threatened," local councillor Max Aschenbach, who tabled the motion, told the BBC.

Mr Aschenbach, from left-leaning satirical political party Die Partei, said he believed it was necessary to take action because politicians were not doing enough to "position themselves clearly" against the far-right.

"The request was an attempt to change that. I also wanted to know what kind of people I'm sitting with in the city council of Dresden," he said.

The resolution acknowledges that "right-wing extremist attitudes and actions... are occurring with increasing frequency" and calls on the city to help victims of far-right violence, protect minorities and strengthen democracy.

Mr Aschenbach said adopting the motion showed the city council's commitment to fostering "a free, liberal, democratic society that protects minorities and resolutely opposes Nazis."

How was a 'Nazi emergency' declared?
Mr Aschenbach's resolution was put to a vote by Dresden's city council on Wednesday night and approved by 39 votes to 29, according to local media reports.

Germany's governing Christian Democrats (CDU) were among those to reject the resolution.

"From our point of view, this was primarily an intended provocation," Jan Donhauser, chairman of the CDU City Council Group, told the BBC.

"'State of emergency' means the collapse or a serious threat to public order. That is not given rudimentarily. Furthermore, the focus on 'right-wing extremism' does not do justice to what we need. We are the guardians of the liberal-democratic basic order and no violence, no matter from which extremist side it comes, is compatible with it," he said.

Mr Donhauser added that the "vast majority" of Dresdeners were "neither right-wing extremists nor anti-democratic".

Mr Aschenbach said the city was not obliged to take any action following the adoption of his resolution, but that "theoretically, existing measures should be given a higher priority and future decisions should follow this."

While opposing the resolution, the CDU said it hopes to "strengthen the institutions that are best suited to combating politically motivated violence."

Kai Arzheimer, a German politics professor who has written extensively on far-right extremism, said the resolution's main impact was symbolic, but that it could mean that more money would be allocated to programmes combating extremism in the future.

"I don't think that any other German city has declared a 'Nazi emergency'. Resolutions against right-wing extremism are not so uncommon, however," he said.

What is Dresden's connection to the far-right?
Dresden has long been known for its links to the far right.

In the early 1990s, neo-Nazi groups began staging rallies there to remember what they called "the bombing Holocaust", when the city was bombed by British and American forces in 1945, Mr Arzheimer said. These groups went on to become active in surrounding areas and in southern Saxony.

The state of Saxony has also long been a stronghold of the far-right National Democratic Party of Germany (NPD) and later the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party.

In state elections in September, support for the AfD surged, up 17.8% from 2014 to finish on 27.5%.

Dresden is also where the anti-Islam Pegida (Patriotic Europeans against the Islamisation of the West) movement began in 2014, and where it continues to hold rallies.

Media captionWhat is the Pegida movement?
Pegida supporters say people need to "wake up" to the threat of Islamist extremists. They want Germany to curb immigration and accuse the authorities of failing to enforce existing laws.

The movement has spurred large counter-rallies in the city.

Serve Germany right for support of HK rioters. I know such action will come back to bite them. Radical has no place in civilized world. Western europe who cheer on HK rioters will soon see such action repeat on their homeland. First is Spain, London and soon Germany.

Soon, we will see Police beat up violent German rioters and the double standard of western europe civilised will awfully revealed. :enjoy:

There is a huge difference in the culture of educated Germans and lower class Germans..Educated Germans have almost erased the lower class Germans out of their culture in their newspapers,TV talk shows, state TV funded internet youtube channels. The only thing that lower class Germans live for and look foward to are their football clubs and beer..Educated Germans are slowly steering themselves to Organic wine...The previously vibrant youth punk/alternative music/gothic/skateboarding scene is also dying because of the utter lack of young Germans..At least 40 percent of the present youth of Germany is comprised of Turks,Arabs and Balkans. But the same educated Germans put a lot of restriction on them..Educated Germans are stuck in a quagmire where they have disdain for lower class Germans but also cannot fully hug and embrace the immigrant youth..They are in a tough pickle

Right Wing ideology is spreading every where as they feel there cultural identity is eroding and immigrants are taking over good paying jobs.

Within a decade these parties will be in power soon. That’s when real problems will start.

But I also see this realignment after Cold War as it will be West + Gangus vs Muslims.

Reunification was a mistake looking back but Germany should have been a unified. Neutral state then again I am not a German so I could just observe pretty much, but its proven tho that multiculturalism has been failure

I think Germans are now closer to extinction then ever were for thousands years. Or they find some guts to make tough decisions or we say good bye to Germany - and after that to Western Europe in general in 2-3 generations.

Don't bet on it....White Nationalists hate more the largely brown skin colour that most Muslim populations have rather than the ideology. Many White Nationalists even promote "white sharia" as a backhanded compliment to Islam since they are apparently sick of Western Feminism. Any tentative alliance between Hindu Nationalists and White Nationalists would break down because of the immense amount of opprobrium that WNs direct towards "turd-skinned" Indians on the Internet. And in this day of the internet it would be very hard for the WN leaders to hide their inherent dislike for Indians, making any potential alliance null and void. Also Hindu Nationalists as well as wider Hindus themselves are very apprehensive and wary of the attempts of WNs to appropriate Hindu history, texts and spirtuality for themselves and giving a white nationalist tinge to all of it..The hostilities between "Muslim" Pakistan and "Hindu" India will remain a purely subcontinental affair in our lifetimes unless things escalate to a nuclear war. But without a nuclear war neither Pakistan would recover Indian Kashmir nor India the Pak administered GB and AJK.

Rest of the world is blissfully unaware of the grudges that Hindus and Muslims of the subcontinent hold against eachother..Even Iran and Afghanistan have no clue regarding Hindu discontent towards Muslim or vice versa, and both of those countries tend to have a positive opinion of India when interacting with Indians in the West

TL;DR: Rest of the world doesnot really care about India or Pakistan and their hostilities towards eachother. India and Pakistan came on the brink of nuclear war at the beginning this year which could have threatened the wider Eurasia because of nuclear clouds. But that war didnot even make primetime TV news in Germany for the first three days..and only on the 4th day I heard that news being relayed on the radio as a 7th or 8th news item while I was driving. But on the contrast, every little incident of sexual harrassment in India is greedily picked up by news agencies in Germany, which makes no sense. (Though that has died down a lot after German media was exposed of suppressing thousands of sex attacks in their own country since start of 2016)

Bottomline: All the subcontinental countries are seen as foolish dirty, little brown men who are irrelevant and only person from this part of the world who is worth listening to is the Dalai Lama

the rise of the right wing in Europe is a good thing, it will help promote world peace even if just a little, most of the Europian politicians that support endless wars all over the world & want to establish the EU as a hegemonic empire are from the left wing, while the right on the other hand mostly is against interventionism & are isolationists in that they mostly care about their own problems & keeping their own culture, ofcourse there are some right wing politicians that support war & some from the left who are against it (Corbyn for example) but in general they are in the minority.
