DRDO says its Kaveri engine can power combat drones 80 kN of thrust now.

NEW DELHI: So what if it cannot power fighter jets as of now, it's perfectly suitable for combat drones, warships and possibly even trains! Or, so the never-say-die Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) is now proclaiming as far as its Kaveri engine is concerned.

DRDO officials say the Kaveri aero-engine, which incidentally is over 22 years in the making by now with a sanctioned cost of Rs 2,893 crore, can power unmanned combat aerial vehicles (UCAVs) because they "do not require the kind of higher thrust" needed for the indigenous Tejas LCA (light combat aircraft).

"Nine prototypes of Kaveri engine and four prototypes of Kaveri Core (Kabini) engines have been developed with over 2,000 hours of testing...the engine is proven with almost 80 kilonewtons (kN) of thrust now, which is enough for our UCAVs (Tejas requires 90 kN)," said an official.

This comes even as DRDO has now begun preliminary work on developing stealth UCAVs, under the secretive 'autonomous unmanned research aircraft' programme. This UCAV will weigh less than 15 tonnes, fly at altitudes of 30,000 feet and fire missiles and bombs with precision, as earlier reported by TOI.

DRDO has also come up with a modified Kaveri version, by "designing a free-power turbine to generate shaft power", for propulsion of warships. The Navy, as per DRDO, has shown "a lot of interest" in the engine which has a 12 MW power output.

"With Kaveri, we have proven several gas turbine technologies for a variety of applications. Indian Railways is also interested in knowing whether Kaveri can be used for powering trains," said the official.

DRDO is now also trying to tie up with French company Snecma to jointly develop the "90kN thrust class of upgraded Kaveri engines" for the future requirements of IAF. But the fact remains that the Kaveri project's dismal performance has forced India to ink a $822 million contract for 99 General Electric's F-414 engines, with an option to go for another 49 engines at a later stage, to power the Tejas Mark-II version.

While the first 20 Tejas will be powered by GE-404 engines, the next six Mark-II squadrons (16-18 jets in each) will have the new more powerful GE F-414 engines. Under the LCA project, which itself has been 28 years in the making with an almost 3,000% jump in overall developmental costs, IAF hopes to have its first two fully-operational Tejas squadrons based at the Sulur airbase (Tamil Nadu) by 2015 now.


So it means Kaveri is at 80-KN now. They need to reduce weight and add 15-20KN more....:coffee:

I hope a new K11 version of kaveri is built for 5th gen fighters. K10 version was meant for LCA or you can say it was always visioned to power a 4th gen fighter jet. If you really want a 5th gen fighter you also need an engine with 5th gen technologies like what US and Russians have done.

We are looking for a partner for kaveri i think we should directly go for a version which can power AMCA and UCAV because in the current version our engine can't power a stealth UCAV or fighter jet as it would effect the very important thing i.e stealth. I hope DRDO doesn't try to power a 5th gen fighter jet with an old engine.

I mean they will have to work hard, if what they are saying is true i.e. K9 can give upto 80kn then they can add on extra 10 in few years. They should start working on a true 5th gen engine with both Russian and french help. Russians can use this engine to power their smaller 5th gen plane (Mig LMFS) and french can power the future version of Rafale with that while we can power all our future fighter jets.

man Kaveri is planned to power trains drones ships etc but can we first put it on the goddam LCA first?

The reason Kaveri wasn't cleared for LCA was because it only 80 KN thrust engines have been successfully tested, while the LCA needs around 90KN. The options were to use the under powered engines (like they did with Marut) or try and match the actual requirement.
But 80 KN is more than sufficient for drones and railways!!

There are many issues.
1. IAF and Army is more interested in Foreign products, coz they get good commission and sometime women.
2. Indian Navy is more concentrating on Ingeniousnes products.
3. there are very few countries who make powerful jet Engine, Its great to see that we have made 80 KN engine, Be hopeful, more powerful engine are in line.. One can not hit the target in first shot.
4. As Dhruva is platform for LCH, LCA is platform for AMCA.. K10 will be platform of something bigger... Don't loose hope.
5. Final word: Always keep Plan B.. LCA was late coz we didn't had plan B, We waited for Kaveri long enough, rather than going RAFAEL way (Rafael used American engine in its prototypes, later they used french engine.. )

okay but the LCA has thrust to weight problems it needs stronger engine will 1 90kn engine do the job or do we need something more powerful like 120kn engine?

GE F414 engines are to be used for LCA mk2. SHould be sufficient.

so the GEF414 engines will have more thrust than the Kaveri we are working on with Snecma? then what is point of using weaker Kaveri?

The future AMCA is planned to be powered by 2 engines of around 100 KN each. The Kaveri-Snecma JV (if it happens) is supposed to develop the engines by the time the first AMCA prototype is ready.

As far as your 2 engine concerns go the LCA was specifically designed to be flown in the terrain around the Siachen glacier and other high altitude war fields where air war fare with the present planes in extremely difficult. The low weight (it's the lightest airstrike plane in the world) and the uniquely shaped delta wing are supposed to help it perform in those extreme conditions. These conditions cannot be met with 2 engines.

yeah but it only has service ceiling of 15km and i hope no engine failures occur with LCA
