DRDO Chief sacked?

As an Administrator he was a failure.A complete failure.

Sir i guess that is the way current government sees him. The fact that we still are depending on import for our security needs and these means more deals and therefore chances of corruption, not to mention delays in getting essentials would not have gone well with current administration.
& if that is the case, i would hazard a guess, that more sackings might be in the pipeline.

Parrikar - "didn't want senior post to held by someone on contract Recommend sacking... need younger scientists as chief"

.
or could be plain power struggle, new defence minister wants to prove who is boss.

Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar says it was his recommendation that the DRDO chief's post should be held by a young person and not by someone who is on contract. The Modi government sacked DRDO chief and missile scientist Avinash Chander, who is also the scientific advisor to the defence minister, almost 16 months before his tenure approved by the previous UPA regime was to end.

DRDO posed a great hurdle in indignation of many defense system.. A job well done by government to send shivers in deep spine of those scientist to deliver.. They can not sit there for years with having salary by taxpayers money.. I have a relative who was in DRDO missile development unit Hyderabad, and he told me that attitude of many isn't great towards timely deliverable.. He has been retired few months back and was aware of such hurricane in DRDO..

Do you understand that the Defence scientists get pea nuts in the form of salary compared to their expertise ?
compared to their counterparts anywhere else ?

If these people leave the institution and country like millions other do in search of green pastures ...then who will run the show ?

I think you are really underestimating the works of likes of Mr Avinash Chander ...

It is not just DRDO but Indian armed forces who posed a great hurdle towards indegenisation ...constnaly asking for foreign products despite having indigenous products ...so do not blame DRDO alone for that ...

Salary structure in India is peanuts in all sectors compared elsewhere.. Don't compare them with west.. We are third world and accept that..

It seems sacking the chief is just beginning. A no. of such people are going to be in line of fire.

This churning in DPSUs was long overdue. They should know the importance of timelines and should be held accountable for. Next should be overhauling of the OFB working culture.

Dr Avinash Chander deserved a more graceful exit. He worked entire life for DRDO and the nation.

They get salaries as per Govt scales like everyone else so whats the point ? They joined on their own free will.

The Armed forces are fed up with the lolly pops the DRDO offers . The armed forces couldn't care less where their requirements are met from provided a) They are delivered in time b) They work c) They are cost effective.

The DRDO has been a huge disappointment thus far - no value for money spent on them.

This termination of contract is a good wake up call to all such orgnisations.

That is your opinion .

I believe for amount of money invested by GOI as compared to other nations and number of hurdles they faced ...DRDO has done satisfactory job .

DRDO gets continuity as chief gets 18 more months | Business Standard News

They didn't extended his contract as you can see, they just decided to not retire him early because of his age and keep the running contract and THAT seems to have changed now, for whatever reasons.

Hi @sancho
I am really sorry for kind of words I used .

I have understood now what you were trying to say yesterday ...

Indeed UPA Govt had already made provision for contract after the impending retirement for Mr Avinash Chander right at the time of his appointment in 2013 .

UPA had gone too far ...The pattern we have seen to usurp on right of incoming govt to make the appropriate apts .

so when Mr Avinash Chander retired in November 2014 ..he was continued by virtue of contract that done by UPA ...possibly with idea to provide continuity to crucial projects that Mr Avinash Chander was heading .

Mr Manohar parrikar took helm only in early November ..since he was new and still was getting acquainted with the nitty gritties of MoD he may not have wanted to rock the boat ...

Now I understand the whole issue .

I am really sorry for using inappropriate words without actually understanding what you were trying to explain to me ...

I have edited all my relevant replies to your posts accordingly .

But I felt sincere apology was still due ...

He should have been retired in November itself
when he completed his EXTENDED tenure

Then this ugly situation would not have arisen

This termination of contract looks like an after thought by the Govt .
first they extended his contract and then realised that he did not deserve it

But one thing is certain that such repeated extensions HURT the
promotion prospects of other deserving people

I know that .. and I accept that .
But do you expect govt to treat the crucial and critical area of defence that too on which impinges the national security just like any other sector ?

DRDO has done great job in delivering much needed strike capability against our enemies by operationalisng crucial Agni system ....Let us not forget that .

I refuse to accept that scientists like Mr avinash Chander have to be treated like any other ordinary govt or public sector employee .

This is ungratefulness to the life time sacrifice of these scientists ...

Hi @sancho

No issue buddy, I can understand that reasons you posted and i even agree that the way he was sacked are pretty dubious, but as I said, I only criticized his work as the DRDO chief not as a scientist nor as a person of course. The new DM is surely taking actions, contrary to the part time DM Jaitley and it needs to be seen if these decisions are for good or bad.

Anyway, no need for bad feelings!
