MUMBAI: Doordarshan's popular Urdu channel has landed in the soup with many Muslim viewers by airing a cooking show featuring a pork dish.

In its April 9 episode, DD Urdu's series 'Taste Ki Baat Hai' (Talk of Taste) presented a recipe with pork and went on to speak of its deliciousness.

The programming was criticized by some for being "in poor taste". A section of community leaders and scholars said since the majority of DD Urdu's viewers were Muslims, the channel had displayed a lack of "sensitivity" by showing a dish of pork, which is "haram" (forbidden) in Islam.

"An Urdu channel does not cater to Muslims alone, but it should be careful not to air a show that hurts the religious sentiments of a section of its viewers," said professor Akhtarul Wasey, who teaches Islamic studies at Jamia Millia Islamia University. "This could have been avoided."

The cooking series 'Taste Ki Baat Hai' often showcases different cuisines and lifestyles through families from different backgrounds. "We will investigate how this particular episode got telecast on the show," said DD Urdu's programming executive M Sengupta.

Islamic scholars said articles in the media and television shows should not be seen from a religious prism, but the media should "exercise self-censorship when it comes to religious sensibilities".

"There is no ban on people's tastes," said Islamic scholar Zeenat Shaukat Ali. "There is no ban on people's tastes. But if DD Urdu is viewed by a large number of Muslims, it should not have featured a cooking show on pork since the Quran forbids its consumption, and no Muslim will appreciate any session detailing the preparation of a pork dish."

Some commentators wondered how the episode slipped through scrutiny before being broadcast. "DD Urdu is becoming popular among Urdu-wallas," said activist and Urdu columnist Firoz Bakht Ahmed. "I'm surprised nobody pointed out the potential hurt it would cause to Muslim viewers before the show got aired."

There are many Hindu viewers of Urdu channels like etv urdu or DD urdu.. when did they became islamic channels?

DD and Etc Urdu are not Muslim channels but the majority of the viewers are and it's insensitive to telecaste a program like that. DD should appoligice to its Muslim viewers.

Nope not at all. Muslims should apologize to DD for taking offence to it actually... About time they stopped crying wolf for every small little thing..

I watch Doordarshan, and I like pork, does that mean DD cant broadcast things I like because they are scared of Muslims and their whining?

As I mentioned earlier, no Islamic code is set for any tv channels in india

its not as easy as it seems..by law the channel can show anything..but ....

I kinda agre with joekerish when he says what if a beef recipe is preparatio is presented in a sanskrit channel..ofcourse its not against teh law, but isnt it in a bad taste ? my two cents

Yup... as far as I know there are no laws against it in the country.

what about Indian state's ban on cow slaughter ? You could get 7 years in prison and a fine of 5000 rupees if you violate this law so by your logic it should mean that state is scared of Hindus because it ban the Muslims to slaughter the cow and eat beef

In other words Indian state is making laws according to halal /haram concepts of hindusim

cow slaughter isn't banned in India its just banned in some religious conscious provinces like Gujarat and Tamil Nadu

Its a stupid law, but I let it slide because most Hindus really look up to cows as Gods. To Hindus, cows is like what drawing perverted cartoons of the prophet is for Muslims. But obviously they are both wrong.

I think all these religious laws are stupid obviously. Ideally, India would be a country where cows can be killed and eaten by Indians, regardless whether they are hindus or muslims, and no rioting happens. Same with prophet cartoons for muslims, chrisitans. It would also be a country where any criticism of Islam/Christianity.Hinduism/SIkhism etc can be made without some dumba$$es on their periods going rioting.

Absolute freedom of speech (as long as its not speech that encourages genocide/violence to another community), and get rid of this garbage religious teachings which were meant for thousands of years ago and not applicable to civilized human beings today. But sadly Indians are neither at that educational level yet, nor they have the intellectual ability to look at things logically beyond the useless prisms of caste/sect/religion, so we will keep working until we get there.

Beef is not mandatory for Muslims nor banned in every state.

Not everything is Hinduism, meat sold in India is dominated by halal meat. I have eaten Jhatka meat only few times in my life

Yet India is biggest producer and one of the biggest exporter of Beef.... You are highly misinformed and mis-educated about India.

Though I appreciate state govt movement to ban unhygienic meat. Many state capital don't allow to cut Sheep and Goat in open. There are some slaughter house from where Butcher bring the meat (with Municipal seal)
