President wears face covering during visit to military hospital as cases of coronavirus surge across the United States

President Donald Trump on Saturday was photographed wearing a mask during a visit to the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, after months of refusing to don the medical expert-recommended face coverings meant to help slow the spread of the coronavirus.

"I love masks in the appropriate locations," Trump said, speaking to reporters at the White House before his visit.

Trump's usual reluctance to cover his mouth and nose in public has been a point of controversy during the nation's coronavirus crisis, especially as cases of COVID-19 continue to spike — particularly in Republican-led states.

Before taking off for Walter Reed, Trump said he'd "probably" wear a mask.

"I think when you're in a hospital, especially in that particular setting, where you're talking to a lot of soldiers and people that, in some cases, just got off the operating tables, I think it's a great thing to wear a mask," the president told reporters. "I've never been against masks, but I do believe they have a time and a place."

Trump was at Walter Reed to visit wounded soldiers and medical professionals at the facility who specialize in coronavirus care.

May visit to a Ford facility in Michigan, at the request of company chairman Bill Ford and out of view from media and photographers.

The topic of wearing face masks has become a politicized issue, despite their effectiveness in helping to slow the spread of the deadly virus. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends individuals wear close-fitting cloth masks in public to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 from the mask-wearing individual to others.

The United States has recorded more than 3 million coronavirus infections and more than 130,000 Americans have died from the virus.

Recent research suggests that more widespread mask usage could help prevent between 17,742 and 28,030 deaths across the United States before Oct. 1.

More than 20 states now require face masks to be worn in public. But some of the hardest-hit states, particularly Arizona and Florida, have declined to issue such orders statewide.

(CNN)President Donald Trump, ever impulsive, often acts against his own interests. But nothing tops his self-defeating resistance to mask wearing during the coronavirus pandemic.

His dogged stance, mimicked by supporters, undercuts efforts by public health officials to stop the summer resurgence of coronavirus. That in turn impedes efforts to revive the US economy, now staggering under the highest unemployment rate since the Great Depression.

Failures on both fronts has left Trump in a deep hole on his pre-eminent priority of winning reelection. And they leave public health experts mystified.

"It's hard to explain," says Mark McClellan, a former health adviser to President George W. Bush who's now at Duke University.

Sometimes the President hurts himself out of unwillingness to rebuke supporters ("very fine people on both sides" in Charlottesville) or inability to resist gratuitous attacks (on the late GOP Sen. John McCain, among others). His disastrous June 1 church photo-op sprang from embarrassment over disclosure that racial justice protests sent him retreating into an underground White House bunker.

But his failure to promote mask-wearing stands out. He's had more than two months to consider it, after his former US Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Scott Gottlieb recommended masks as a critical tool for reopening the economy.

Ever since, as the pandemic has surged and ebbed and surged again, Trump has had one chance after another to heed the recommendations of public health officials and tell Americans to wear masks to reduce viral spread. He hasn't.

CDC says U.S. could get coronavirus under control in one to two months if everyone wears a mask

The United States could get the coronavirus pandemic under control in one to two months if every American wore a mask, a top Centers for Disease Control and Prevention official said Tuesday.

“The time is now,” Dr. Robert Redfield, director of the CDC, said during an interview with the Journal of the American Medical Association’s Dr. Howard Bauchner. “I think if we could get everybody to wear a mask right now I think in four, six, eight weeks we could bring this epidemic under control.”


Both the CDC and the World Health Organization now recommend that people wear masks as a way to slow the spread of the virus, which has infected more than 13 million people worldwide and killed at least 574,600 as of Tuesday, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.

“I think we’re being very clear now,” Redfield said. “Now’s the time to wear a mask.”

Scientists say the virus can spread through respiratory droplets that pass when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Studies suggest the masks may serve as a helpful barrier to spreading infection.

Some researchers have suggested that the coronavirus could spread through aerosolized droplets, or particles that travel by air, particularly in poorly ventilated spaces. Last week, the WHO acknowledged that airborne transmission was possible mostly in closed spaces indoors, saying more research was needed to be certain. If the virus does spread by air in such environments, masks could prove more critical to preventing infection.

Earlier in the day, the CDC released a new study that said state leaders should consider requiring face coverings to reduce the spread of the virus. The study looked at two Missouri hair stylists who were infected with Covid-19 but didn’t pass it on to their clients.


“With the potential for presymptomatic and asymptomatic transmission, widespread adoption of policies requiring face coverings in public settings should be considered to reduce the impact and magnitude of additional waves of COVID-19,” the study published by the CDC said.

Some governors, including California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, have issued requirements to wear face coverings in public or in certain environments when people are unable to practice social distancing. However, there’s no U.S. nationwide mandate like in China and other countries. Not all states in the U.S. have issued mask mandates, and some with surging outbreaks, including Florida, have left it up to local cities and counties. That’s left U.S. businesses to enforce face covering requirements on their own, as CNBC previously reported.

Last week, President Donald Trump criticized Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s leading infectious disease expert, and other federal health officials for not advising the broader public to wear masks earlier in the outbreak.

During an interview Thursday with Fox News’ Sean Hannity, Trump said, “Dr. Fauci’s a nice man, but he’s made a lot of mistakes.”

“They’ve been wrong about a lot of things, including face masks,” he said. “Maybe they’re wrong, maybe not. A lot of them said don’t wear a mask, don’t wear a mask. Now they’re saying wear a mask. A lot of mistakes were made, a lot of mistakes.”

On Saturday, Trump wore a mask in public for the first time while visiting Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

Redfield said Tuesday that wearing a mask is not a political issue but a public health one. He said he was pleased to see Trump and Vice President Mike Pence wearing masks in public recently.
