Defence Minister A. K. Antony Saturday asked the
DRDO not to extend the date of final operational
clearance of indigenous Tejas light
combat aircraft beyond 2014 and said there was
no substitute for self-reliance. Inaugurating the 37th Directors’ Conference of
DRDO (Defence Research and Development
Organisation) here, Antony said it will have to
take the lead in achieving the goals of
indigenisation. An official press release said the minister asked
DRDO to conclude at the earliest the unfinished
projects which were in pipeline for a very long
time. In this connection, he drew the attention to the
Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) project and said DRDO
must not extend further the date beyond 2014,
set by the DRDO chief V.K. Saraswat, for the Final
Operational Clearance of the Tejas for induction
into the Indian Air Force,’ the release said. Antony asked the DRDO scientists to focus on
priority areas and said ultimate test of success of
the organisation lies in the satisfaction of the
users – the three services. Antony referred to ‘some recent developments
which have put the defence acquisition process
under the scanner’ and said ‘such incidents
highlight the need to look within and make us
realise that there is absolutely no substitute to
self-reliance’. ‘If our indigenisation goals are to be realised,
DRDO will have to take the lead in this regard.
Other stakeholders, for instance, the services, the
ministry of defence and private industry in the
defence sector, too, must cooperate to ensure
quick, honest and transparent acceptance of the systems,’ Antony said. He said all the stakeholders must meet at regular
intervals to undertake periodic reviews and
suggest corrective action. The minister said both DRDO and the services
must place more trust and confidence in each
other’s abilities and work with close synergy. The concept of block acceptance and spiral
development that is being followed in most
leading countries of the world must be embraced
after due deliberations and required changes,’
Antony said. Responding to the DRDO’s request for an
enhanced budget, Antony said allocation of funds
will not be a constraint but at the same time,
spending the money most judiciously and with
transparency must be the watchword. He said continuous funding would be required
for research and development. But with more
emphasis on indigenisation and self reliance, we
would save a lot of money in the long run,
although we might have to invest more to begin
with,’ he said. He also complimented the top brass of DRDO for
their achievements in recent years including
Agni-5 and the BrahMos missile systems. The
conference was also addressed by Minister of
State for Defence Jitendra Singh and National
Security Advisor Shivshankar Menon.

the solution for the crisis:

1. induct a squadron of mk 1 into india air force
2. obtain any certification for mk 2
3. start mk 3 and ask for more money and time as usual

It is not crisis... The requirements for Tejas dynamically changing... and the HAL is not able to achieve it in time... until a decade ago HAL doesn't have this much economical sources....

what will happen if they cannot reach the target in 2014? their money will be cut and no one will receive their pay or no one will give supplies to the team! it is a crisis!

Salaam to all the Muslims,

:pakistan:

This is probably the most ridiculous aircraft development project in the history of aviation.

If you can't do it, just say so and give it up. Why waste so much money and manpower on a dead duck? Just build something else, much more easier and gain plenty of experience from it.

Salaam to all to Muslims.

HAL will be reformed... But hope for best... Nothing is wrong in trying... you may be building 5th gen jet while we are struck at 4th gen.... Tejas is not a failure... it is a time taking project... which is new to India... china picked different path... bought soviet/russian jets ripped of it, studied about it, took their help and Built 4th gen... India picked different path ... We will induct Tejas for sure... but may be in limited squadrons......from the knowledge get from Tejas will be useful to AMCA...

it is not any kite to build just like that.... first you build helicopter then come to blame.... post reported..

Depends on priorities and those depend on the IAF.
If the IAF is that desperate for the Tejas then it will convey its concerns to the ministry.
If it does not consider it priority enough to defend the project then it will not coerce the ministry to give the Tejas more chances.

Tejas wil arrive EVENTUALLY JUST LIKE Arjun main tank arrived and already MK2 arjun is being tested and batches ordered.

MK1 Tejas will arrive most likely 2015 foc.

Only 40 wil be built

Before MK2 arrives around 2018-2020 (i believe the indians have already signed a contract for 99 GE engines for mk2 tejas)

JUST LIKE ARJUN tANK eventually this TEJAS will lay the foundation for FUTURE INDENGIOUS FIFTH generation fighters

It will help a lot in amca.

DRDO should concentrate on a few key projects instead of announcing new projects on a periodic base and delaying everything.

DRDO and HAL go after every single govt. project so that they don't give space for their monopolies to end. Look at the trainer fiasco. HAL has been sitting on it's a$$ for decades, but began work on HTT 40 only well after the retirement phase of IAF trainers. The moment they realized that an outsider (Pilatus) will be given the order, they got so worked up that they've decided to build HTT 40 even though the IAF has said they don't want them.

If it does not consider it priority enough to defend the project then it will not coerce the ministry to give the Tejas more chances.

IAF is VERY desperate for Tejas. All the Mig 21s are going out for sure. And it's the Tejas that's gonna replace them. They're quite angry with HAL.

lol, this is the mindset of the lazy, uninspired and unimaginative.

(sort of) fits:

“I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.”
― Thomas A. Edison

This is the FIRST time India has ever embarked on anything of this scale. It is not just the plane the DRDO/ADA/HAL have had to develop but the entire ecosystem of support that goes with such programs.

In reality the idea the LCA is a failed project is pure fantasy in the eyes of all but the ignorant. The targets the program have failed to meet where internal targets that were arbitrarily created early on before the exact scale of the project was known and before the IAF had started asking for a 4.5++ gen multi-role fighter. If you look at the Typhoon,Rafale, PAK-FA and F-22 projects you will see a development timeline not too dissimilar to the LCA's which isn't bad considering all the above projects were undertaken by nations with extensive aerospace experience and industrial base. The ADA/DRDO have developed some genuinely world-class tech on the LCA and devised some truly innovative and ground-breaking design and testing techniques in the process. All this with crippling sanctions and a fraction of the budget of the aforementioned projects.

Additionally a nation developing its first super-sonic multi-role fighter without having a single crash during the entire duration of its intensive testing program is virtually unheard of.

It is very easy to criticise but much harder to actually do. I genuinely would love to see Pakistan undertake such a project- less barking from Pakistan and more doing.

Salaam

Antony Sir don't ask them...You should Order them that any further delay won't be tolerated by MoD....and if possible pls tame the DRDo officials...It should be their Work who should do the talking not their mouth....
