He said "India would be a superpower by 2012".

Bear in mind that we are in the year 2014.

Do you think his views were based on facts and logic, or on his identity as an Indian?

This would simply mean you haven't read the article or understood the context in which he made the comment.

[Former President A P J Abdul Kalam today lauded ISRO's scientists for successfully launching the PSLV-C9 to put 10 satellites in orbit.
Besides, the Chandrayaan-I unmanned moon mission by the year end would add another feather in the country's space programme, Kalam, here to participate in a school function, said.

India has become very advanced in space technology, he said, adding the country would become a superpower by 2012.

Do you get it now?

I have read the article. Apparently you have not.

Here is a direct quote from the article:

India has become very advanced in space technology, he said, adding the country would become a superpower by 2012.

"Though I have envisioned India to become a superpower by 2020, the attitude and the confidence of the youth, to conquer everything in the right spirit, would make the country a global leader and super power within five years," Kalam told reporters.

Clearly he had no idea what he was talking about.

It was most likely an off hand comment that he made without realising the gravity of what he was saying.

Like duh.

Do you argue against the contention that India is indeed very advanced when it comes to space technology?

What's wrong with one of the chief architects taking some credit for it?

What do you guys think of this statement by India's favorite president:

India to become superpower by 2012: Kalam - Economic Times

I am a nationalist myself, but I would never claim that China is a superpower, since it goes against the facts, the evidence, and basic logic.

At this point, only America could claim to have the degree of global hegemony to be called a superpower.

Buddy you are no match for Dr.A.P.J Abdul Kalam. His superpower versions and idea is too different compared to other countries versions it is not based on hard power .It is based on technological advancement. Not military advancement.A.P.J Abdul Kalam already rejected old cold War super power versions.I think you misunderstand him.May be you cant analyse what he meaned.
