I agree - what i would question is the aftermath of the support resulted in creating a monster unable to control itself resulting baths of extremism sadly deposited all over the world.Short term it was payback - long term was it worth it as this animal head keeps popping up to take innocent lives?

Many Americans think its worth it as it destroyed USSR..the greatest rival to US supremacy. Whatever said and done Taliban, Al Qaeda or their associates will never be that great a threat as USSR was to US.

Many Americans believe also that Afghanistan has simply gone on far too long and the losses of life have been unnecessary - a short vigorous attack on Afghanistan and then a complete withdrawal would have perhaps had a better result - suppose we will never know.

Gambit - i understand why the US did what they did - my grievance is rather than blindly supporting them maybe more supervision was required as who they were supporting grew stronger. Surely in their wisdom they at some stage should have administered their aid carefully to make certain the same arms were not used against themselves?

Taliban formed itself when certain warlords were raping and murdering people. That's why people in Afghanistan consider Mullah Omar a hero, because he stood up to these corrupt warlords when the country was in disarray.

The brain behind Taliban was ISI, money came from Gulf countries especially KSA and PA officers acted as military advisors..and this was done so that Pakistani generals could realize their long cherished dream of 'Strategic Depth' against India in AF by placing a pro-Pakistan regime in that country.

That's half the story,the main thing was many Pakistani trucks which traded with the former central asian USSR states were being looted by the former muhj's so the ISI equipped mullah omar and his gang from the madrasas to secure the trucks so that they could pass safely.Sadly like in every story success reaches the head of some it did so in omar's case.He felt he was allah's answer to the end of Afghanistan's woes and then we all know what happened.
