I agree - what i would question is the aftermath of the support resulted in creating a monster unable to control itself resulting baths of extremism sadly deposited all over the world.Short term it was payback - long term was it worth it as this animal head keeps popping up to take innocent lives?
Any American even remotely knowledgeable about this era acknowledges that the USA dropped the ball after the Soviets withdrew. It's all well & good to kick some Soviet rear - they were our bitter enemy after all - but to leave a giant void behind of poverty and suffering wasn't smart. Warlords popped up, preying on people, and then later the Taliban emerged initially in opposition to the warlords, but later on, they became every bit as oppressive.
And here we are today. The USA didn't create the Taliban, but set the stage for their emergence.

Actually, let me re-phrase that last statement. The SOVIETS set the whole thing in motion with their invasion of Afghanistan. Then, mistakes were made along the way.
