Do Pakistani doctors ever take the Hippocratic oath?

Hi PakiSage

I don't think any one of them is working without pay. What saddens me is that doctors overcharge poor people when they know they don't have enough money to feed themselves.

Now every time a kid says "bara ho kar doctor banoo gaa aur ghariboo ki khidmat karoo ga", I just can't stop laughing. No offense, please. I know there would be good doctors out there but the majority of them is just not good enough. After all they are also part of 'evil-minded' society.

Best wishes

you dont think means you dont know the reality i suggest you to visit few trainee hospitals and talk to few doctors and ask them about their financial position then come back and tell us what you think,,,,,,,,,,,,,i agree with you that some doctors overcharge their poor patients and thats the bad thing....
About your khidmat part i want to say that when i got admission in medical college i thought that i will serve humanity i still believe in it BUT i concluded that serve humanity but serve yourself and you family too bcz.....APna b koi haq hai bahi...
no offense brother

You are welcome.

About other issues:
Actually many doctors specially those in house jobs and FCPS are indeed working for free. The rest just get a pitty and shameful amount somewhere between 200 to 300 dollars a month, without any insurance etc. This is the truth and there should be no denying. I guess you have confused the consultant with the rest of the doctors. Consultant is the senior doctor who has made his/her name. He/she just visits the hospital for a 2-3 hours but then the hospital is being run by the junior doctors. There is one consultant for every 15-20 physicians. I personally do not even blame the consultant either. He/She has worked hard and deserve to get what is due. Currently the fee of a consultant in Pakistan is 800 or equal to just 9 dollars. The same consultant when abroad gets over 300 dollars. So we can not expect our consultants to work for free. Do soldiers, police, train drivers, teachers etc work for free? No. That is the answer. Besides in Pakistan 95% of patients use government hospitals where doctors are unpaid/poorly paid because they can not afford shiny private hospitals made for rich people.
But if you want a free and good quality health care for all rich or poor, you have to have a good and robust health ministry with a healthy budget. Currently Pakistani government spends less than 0.4% of GDP on health in nominal terms. United States spends 16% (their defense budget is at just 4% despite their military being the largest and in war). If you want to see people go to a doctor without paying and get free medicine and free hospital then yeah why not tell your health minister to increase the budget to 8% of GDP that is 20 times now. That would be enough to pay respectable salaries to doctors and nurses, buy meds and equipment for hospitals and such. But wait a minute. There is a problem. There is no more a health ministry in Pakistan. Just a few months ago, during downsizing of the cabinet they finished off the health ministry at federal level despite the fact that all nations in the world administer it centrally planned since that is how it should be. Health is like defense. You can not have defense ministry for every province. But since the health ministry in Pakistan was the weakest and poorest ministry, it was easy to finish it off quietly which they did. No noises. After all people here blame the doctors and not their government for health care. As if doctors do not need to eat or they cure by magic which does not require meds and equipment. Right now the situation is hopeless, my friend. A country without a health ministry should not expect anything more than this. Simply said, it is not the doctors fault. It is the governments. Health is a governance issue and not a professional one. Last year the allocated budget for health research in Pakistan was 20 laks. That is right 2 million rupees. In western countries even private pharma companies pay more than that to their doormen per month.
Finally if you want to have good health care then you need something like this card. Apply for it before it is too late. Many doctors themselves are leaving and applying for such cards for all the reasons said above: Health Card

i like it......... nice answer to critics

i got only 2 months of pay in my 1 year hoesjob--- the ward in which i am a pg trainee has only 1 paid seet and all others 34 are working without pay---- on the other hand guys who had flunked in schools have a stable income and have got married ---- these guys have earned 6-7 years of pay by the time i will get my fellowship degree and would be able to earn money , and thus start a family------ ofcouse i will mint money at that time , i didnt enjoy life in my youth , but i wont let the same thing happen to my kids----------- this is the thought of every doctor --- furthermore visa problems for pakistanees in u.s and u.k residency has made life a living hell in pakistan.

i dont have to justify myself and neither would i like to list the numbers of lives i saved under this oath---- every human would act according to the oath under that circumstance and thats a routine thing .....

however you are mixing the senior proffessors who have gotten foreign degrees when there were no visa restrictions on pakistanees -- they are GODS and they will keep on minting money till they are alive

So have you completed your Fellowship by now?

Hi

Would someone please tell me if doctors in Pakistan take Hippocratic oath? Or, is it simply a part of unwritten medical ethics? Thanks for the information.

Best wishes
Haroon
